Inside Dyson's secret labs in Singapore - where prototypes are tested

  • Dyson is one of the world’s most recognizable vacuum makers, raking in revenue of about $8 billion in 2022. But the tech giant is also known for other household appliances such as bladeless fans, air purifiers and hair styling products.
It is now venturing into a new generation of products, including its latest robot vacuum, the 360 Vis Nav - which the British company claims uses proprietary artificial intelligence technology - and the futuristic-looking Dyson Zone, its first headphones that double up as a wearable air purifier.
CNBC gained exclusive access to its global headquarters and laboratories in Singapore, where the company researches, designs and develops hundreds of prototypes before they hit the shelves.
These include a full-scale model of the Dyson electric car, which was canceled in 2019 after the company spent more than half a billion dollars on the project.
“When you want to pioneer and come up with new technologies and new products, you often are faced with hard decisions that maybe you have to stop products,” John Churchill, Dyson’s chief technology officer, said in an interview with CNBC.
But there’s a silver lining - Dyson identified other technologies which can be spun out of the failed project, such as sensors, robotics, machine learning and, importantly, batteries.
The company is building a giant battery plant the size of 53 basketball courts in Singapore, due to open in 2025. It is part of Dyson’s $3.5 billion global investment plan into software, artificial intelligence and robotics.
“We want to make a battery cell to complement our power system, our motor and our algorithms, but to enable these products to be lightweight, be more efficient and have a longer life,” Churchill said.
However, its expansion in Singapore wasn’t without controversy. James Dyson, the company’s founder, was a vocal supporter of Brexit, arguing that the U.K. would create more wealth and jobs outside the EU single market.
Watch the video to learn more about why the multibillion-dollar tech company is expanding in the region.

I have used my v15 literally every day for 2 years with absolutely no issues at all. I have used over 20 dyson products. Only one had a major problem. How can Dyson create new products from an innovation happened 30 years ago?
    Answer:
1 - They don't, no "major" innovation for number of years, while product release annually like clock works.
2 - Trickle feed technology by holding back new ideas to prevent "self-competing" against own product, until market doesn't want it.
3 - charge customers a higher premium than rest of market to maintain R&D programs.
4 - Their R&D programs consist of pretty plastics, not engineering plastics like the reliable "Henry"
5 - Move to Singapore = Tax Haven
6 - Bigger Marketing budget vs R&D dep. ratio
7 - Hire larger teams of patent lawyers than the competition.
If Dyson really this innovative, why do Dyson feel the need to diversify their product range and resources to focus outside of vacuum cleaners? Knowing vacuum cleaners market share is less than 25% for Dyson.
Dyson Marketing: "Bag-less vacuum" = still use filters, "blade-less fans" = still uses noisier bladed fans inside

Dyson is an over priced, cheaply made product. There is nothing complicated about the engineering. The vacums do not perform as well as Miele which are made in Germany . Dyson spends much of their money on expensive marketing and advertising.

I love the fact a lot of people are clued in to Dyson's game....he's a cold-hearted businessman who, as folk have stated, has purely done it for tax and (lower) regulations. The man's a tool.

It is a mistake, singapore does not hv the talent and vibrance in R&D compared to silicon valley.
Dyson will suffer in the future, just look at creative. Creative made the same mistake by not relocating to silicon valley when they had the chance in the past. Now they are history

Bought a V11. Absolutely underwhelmed by the quality. Touch&feel is like a cheap Chinese knock-off. All plastic, easy getting scratched, battery dies without notice, bad product support. Never again.

About cars: i dont see a future for electric cars. The resources needed for batteries are like oil: theres an end to it. I think hydrogen hasa much better future.
