Nicholson's Obelisk or 'Nicholson's Memorial', is a monument in Pakistan, erected in 1868 in honor of Brigadier-General John Nicholson, a famous military figure of the British Empire.
It is situated at the Tarnol pass ( Margalla Pass) of the Margalla Hills close to the twin cities of Rawalpindi-Islamabad en route to the historical town of Taxila.
The granite obelisk, approximately 40 feet (12 m) tall, stands on a rocky prominence overlooking the Grand Trunk Road connecting Islamabad with Peshawar. There is also a small memorial fountain at the base of the hillock on which the Memorial/Obelisk stands.
Nicholson was born on 11 December 1822 in Lisburn, Ireland, the eldest son of Dr Alexander Jaffray Nicholson and Clara Hogg. He studied at The Royal School Dungannon, a public mixed school, located in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.
Nicholson joined the army of the British East India Company in 1839. Soon after arriving in India, he fought his first combat action in the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42). After the Anglo-Afghan War, he was appointed Political Officer in Kashmir and then District Commissioner in the Sanghar area of Sindh.
He fought bravely during the First Anglo-Sikh War (1845-46), during which he was wounded in an attack on the Margalla Pass, where the Obelisk in his memory now stands. He distinguished himself again in the Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848-49).
John Nicholson became the Victorian "Hero of Delhi" and inspired several books, ballads and generations of young boys to join the army.
He is referenced in numerous literary works, including Rudyard Kipling's Kim. Nicholson features in a number of novels about this period in history. He is mentioned by George MacDonald Fraser in his book Flashman in the Great Game. He also appears as one of the main characters in James Leasor's novel about the Indian Mutiny, Follow the Drum, describing his death in some detail. He is also featured in James Leasor's history of the siege, 'The Red Fort'. A famous biography was also written about him by Lionel J Trotter (1897) and he comes in for conspicuous mention in the book Soldier-Sahibs:The Men who made the North-West Frontier (2001) by British author Charles Allen.
Nicholson also served as Deputy Commissioner of Bannu (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan) from 1852-1854. For his bravery and services towards British government, a tablet in a church at Bannu carries the following caption: “Gifted in mind and body, he was as brilliant in government as in arms. The snows of Ghazni attest his youthful fortitude; the songs of the Punjab his manly deeds; the peace of this frontier his strong rule. The enemies of his country know how terrible he was in battle, and we his friends have to recall how gentle, generous, and true he was.”

Very informative Vlog. Mr Gilani, you are a student of History as you told. I think you should try to contact relevant departments like Aasare Qadeema. Heritages of Pakistan. and Tourism Development Corporation of Pakistan etc to renovate this tower and similar other historic. points. The history should be displayed at these monuments covering all things which you described in your Vlog. United Nation can also help in this regard. Please carry on your mission as history as a subject is not being taught in schools nowadays. That's why many even most of the politicians of Pakistan are not aware of the History of Pakistan and Kashmir. How they can present the Kashmir issue in an international forum? So it is a great job you are doing. Welldone.

You are Mr Shafiq, our history should be displayed at every monument and place but unfortunately our government and its departments are not interested to do this. Some days ago, we went to Bhamala stupa in Haripur district of KPK and we were barred to shoot it by chowkidar of the stupa. I called to some responsible officers of KPK archeological department for permission of videography, they demanded 30,000/= for permission of videography. When I told them that we we are working for promotion of our history, they replied that we are not interested to do so via youtube because our government is doing well.
In this scenario, are you interested in your above suggestion?
We are working well as we can but have no expectations from government departments.

Amir Sultan. I am from Chakwal and traveling on GT Road since 1968 during my study at Abbotabad and Peshawar University. I have seen Nicolson Tower and also some items such as wash basin installed on opposite side of tower which have been removed due to expansion of the road and are placed on North Western side of mountain. Mr. Gilani you have well explained the history of Nicolson Tower and area which really benifitted. I highly appreciate your efforts. God bless you.

I am travelling in Pakistan since I borne in 1955 because my father was in army who also fought 2nd world war in Burma .my father joined british army in 1932 that's why we used to travel .I also served govt jobs for about 44 years and used to see this monomint while going and coming to my native city attock but I was never aware of this place.thankful to Gallian sahib for this information.

I came to your vlogs accidentally & I watch them every now & then. I come home & turn on your vlogs on TV & start making tea or other things almost every evening & your voice is in background. Very simple & easy way to spread the pearls of knowledge you have. & for this particular vlog of monument, I have watched it twice. It takes me back to childhood. My dad was in army & we used to travel a lot between Pindi & Islamabad on GT road & he used to show me this monument as a sign that we are now near our home. I wish I could return back to Pakistan & see all these places. It's a shame that being from Peshawar I have never visited Sethi house, but u showed me. I m first Pakistani female with proper chronic pain training & degree doctor who can even put spinal cord stimulator implants & I came back to Pakistan but society is not ready to accept successful single woman. Wonderful. I am delighted that someone has given attention to this monument. I was much fascinated to see the tower, and more than 33 years back, when my father was taking me to Attock fort, I expressed my curiosity about this monument. Glad to see your vlog, that reminds me of the history, that is long known to me, and my late father too, who quenched my thirst for history and such relics and monuments. It would be unjust, if I do not mention, that what you have told here, is much much comprehensive, and have added much to my knowledge about this monument. You are a valuable human asset as a historian.
