Am I the only one who got emotional as they sailed away from all the drama, help, kindness, community? So glad that you are both healthy and I love Ali's last little bit of this video where she states that community is everything!
What an honour to be included in the boat launch, I am sure to these people it is almost a religious experience, good luck on your travels and repairs ❤️🇨🇦
My plan is to get out there myself someday. Not for my love of the ocean, but because it’s a community that I want to be a part of. I know that a video doesn’t even do THAT justice. The feeling of family from other cruisers seems like the ultimate way of life. Brings out the best of humanity, no matter of background or language barriers. Incredible.
SV Kiana is alive! When we saw her on the reef our hearts were broken with despair. We are so thankful for the Community and are all praying repairs are not extensive and your travels are continued with Happiness and beauty.
Community *is* everything. I’ve worked in the Pacific and know the people who live there. If you had to be stranded anywhere, you were in the right place. I’m sorry you had to suffer, but you’re both stronger for the experience. And your channel has acquired a new, more generous vibe. Good wishes for next steps with repair …. repair of boat, and minds.
It was heart warming to see you 2 well received by the community.... Kudos to you for helping them out and also for being on top of your foot injury Alie! Your sincere appreciation for the community shown through.... Excellent grab on the Totem Brain, they are very knowledgeable and had sage advice to help you guys. Also kudos to your friends/sailing community that came to your rescue to keep you safe! Hope Kiana's hull is shored up like new and you 2 are back enjoying cruising life again!🎉😊
If there was ever a answer to the question "why would you buy an old boat" That gash in the hull would have been a death warrant to any new production boat. She would have opened up like a tin can.
EVERY boat needs a, or two, SplashZone kit aboard. We are so glad you made it off the reef. So glad you made it to a safe boatyard. One one of my husband's passages, a prop wrap actually pulled a 6" gash in the boat and between the SplashZone and 2 extra pumps, they made it 27 more hours to Grenada on an 80' long, 35' beam catamaran. Namaste. 🙏
What a great community of not only the other boaters but the islanders that saved you! Love all around! You're doing all the right things to get to the yard and the hard. Repairs will be many but Kiana is a stout yacht that will be as good as new. Good luck on your passage!
I’m a believer that adversity is the fuel of greatness. As weird as this sounds - you will ultimately be glad all this happened to you…..it’s an invaluable experience that will better equip you for things to come. Just glad all are safe!
Happy tears flowing for you both and Bruno. Wow, the out pour of the local community coming out to help you, shows that there is still hope for our world. I am a single hander of SV Blue Dancer, she is my true love, a 1988 Pacific Seacraft Crealock 34. Even at 70 years old I continue to pour my heart and soul into sailing. I've just started watching and enjoying your videos. I wish to continue safe passage to your destination. Awaiting your next video. Fair winds.
What an emotional roller coaster! As much as it sucks this happened to you guys, you have your boat back, you fought for it and you learned lessons out of it. Sailing can be rough but it's still the best thing you can do in life. I am sitting here in Australia, watching you guys on TH-cam and living your dream vicariously. Look after yourselves as situations like this will weigh on your mind for some time - just remember you are living the dream. I am so happy you guys got off that reef with the help of an awesome community. I hope one day I will be as lucky as you guys again to have adventures like this again, good and bad.
Very happy you get out and sail again. I do point out that quote of Alie about infection in her swolen feet by coral cut. It is an important issued what she described: parasites that are so resilient, and they are able to live in the reef. Things like these never have happened. Global warming is the key to understand the way humanity are push out to adapt into a kind of unknom natural environment. In the meanwhile, we've got to develop our own shield. Hope, we do not go any further on climate change. I want to live in harmony with nature on the ground and under the water.
Glad you guys are back up and running. Quite the experience you went through and some takeaways for all of us. Out of interest, you speak of the cruising community you have found and made, how much of that do you think comes from your youtube channel vs how much organically from cruising. I've been on and off cruising in the Med for 4 years and now in Northern Spain, but have not found much of a community, most people here are part time or retirees and the community does not seem as strong.
Glad to see you guys have been able to get the boat into a condition where you can sail in calm conditions to get to Tahiti and facilities to do more permanent repairs once you can get the boat hauled out. On a more positive note Alie when you were showing us the guys diving down to retrieve your anchors I thought it was amazing that I could see them all the way and see the fish swimming around down there, and that's through the camera as well, I can totally understand why you want to get in the water. Ben with what you said about the master switch corrosion I think maybe it was not the best for a while but you said yourself you hadn't seen in there before. Hopefully when you can get hauled out the damage is not to serious so looking forward to your next episode 💪💪👍👍🇳🇿
@willyum1208 the value only matters to Breaking Waves. For the past 2 episodes I have thanked Breaking Waves for being selfless while facing a terrifying situation. I have no clue what Breaking Waves brings in with TH-cam or Patreon. With less than 100K subscribers, I'm sure it's not much. But, when their boat was grounded and then recovered, they asked for help raising money for the people that rescued them. That GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $25K..... Breaking Waves could have started a GoFundMe campaign to fix their boat and it would have been just as successful, if not more.... I do not pay to join TH-cam channels as a member for early access or special consideration or whatever else joining affords people. I do not use Patreon. I'm not promoting my own channel and I DON't WANt to TELL yA my name. I just wanted to help two people because they helped, not only that island community, but the sailing community that they will be able to help in the future.....
Say hi to totem from me👋 met them in southafrica and St helena 2015, amazing people, and your channel is amazing also, so glad you guys got her afloat and well fought ❤
as a self described anchor nazi who has survived several 60 knot blows at anchor, there is only one I would now use which is the australian Excel anchor. Although the spade looks pretty good too. Btw, they are both better than the ROCNA according to SV Panope's tests. Well done in getting off the reef-- that was a huge nightmare, even just to watch, Cheers Phil
I wouldn't be shy when putting the epoxy on, I'd be lathering it on, better too much than not enough. I'm just soooo dam happy ur floating, best of luck, xx🇦🇺🤘🤙🌟Ben just heat up the anchor steel then bend it back, keep for spare, that's the beauty of steel, she's mouldable. Ali please try an ice the area as much as possible, it will reduce the swelling ok. And then I remember this was months ago🤣
@Freddy456 yep, whilst we were there the supply ship was broken down. What I found strange was that even though there is only one road which is maybe at the most 10km long, every single person on this atoll seems to have a huge 4x4 pickup and they seem to love driving back and forth and queuing for fuel. Not one person wanted to sell us fresh fish. We had to get up at 06:00 saturday morning and cycle to the shop to ensure that we at least got a baguette for the weekend before they sold out. I can't really say that this place is paradise. I found Ragiroa much more friendly.
That little DiveBlue unit is a game changer for sure, but how about those locals free diving to 40ft like it was nothing :-o Good to see a positive outcome from this ordeal with all of the incredible support from the village and from other sailors. Cheers
I’m sure someone has mentioned it, or you’ve figured it out by now, but just in case - freshwater rinse the inside of the boat, wherever saltwater touched anything, and of course all that foam insulation needs to be ripped out. Be super diligent to make sure no saltwater/moisture can take hold around bulkheads, etc. Salt/water will retain moisture, which you will have experienced with saltwater soaked cloths…they just don’t dry! Mix in saltaway or some other salt buster and rinse and repeat!
Tip for any type of open wound or infection at sea.... Immediately grind your antibiotic tablets to powder, and apply directly to the open wound. Instantly halts the infection, opposed to waiting for the oral method to go through your system....
I bet that in spite of the love for the locals and their generosity-- you guys were pretty conflicted about perhaps an emotion to just get going and leave that adventure behind. How ever- that 40 foot free dive for the anchors was a sight to see. look forward to your next stop the the reveal of the damage.
Re: their "work boat", perhaps you could pass this along to them? Since you know the Pacific Northwest, you'll have heard about the Columbia Bar, and general dangers in these waters. There is/was a "super tug" in these waters to pull off grounded wrecks (remember the "New Carissa" wreck on the coast of Oregon here? It pulled her off!). Its technique was to set two massive anchors far out, apart from each other, then get a (massive) line on the wreck. Then instead of using propulsive force to pull the wreck, it would WINCH all three lines in! With two fixed points and massive winches geared down, the wreck comes! (Unfortunately, what happened with the "New Carissa", q.v., was a folly of other failures.)
I’m a diver. When I get a cut on my hand or foot and wish to continue diving on my trip: Wash cut really well with clean water. Dry area around cut with alcohol. Cover wound with tegaderm or other transparent bandage with lots of overlap. Wrap the entire bandage with lots of KT tape to hold tegaderm in place. I’ve dived for a week with this technique in Indonesia and FP. Don’t change bandage until it just won’t stay on.
You guys are young. Just put that in the experience hat and press on. You'll find as you get older, the people you'll be impressed with most aren't the rich celebrities, super successful etc, etc. You'll be impressed with people who are truly kind.
Thankfully, the situation didn't escalate into a full-blown disaster. Now that you've seen how quickly things can go wrong, have you reconsidered getting insurance for your boat?
Ground coffee beans is great in stopping bleeding on cuts and scrapes and have natural desinfectante. Always keep them in a jar on the bottom or your kitchen.
You mention that they are your friends and tribe but no one came to help? I find that very strange. If I was that close, I would definitely come and help.
Yep - agree - very curious to the tribe's backstory.. I'll assume their positive intent. They may have told the tribe to stay. I'm amazed how they problemsolved the situation.

Yes you are
Nope 🥺
I got emotional from their dynamics as a couple.. hopefully i will some day experience something similar..
As you say, family, interpersonal relationships and community are the foundations for building something better for everyone. ❤
Thank you for sharing your story. Very moving to see the community rally around you and help when you needed it most. All my best.
I am sure they were as sad as you to see you leave. Your charisma is amazing, your brought them joy and energy.

What a truly amazing story with a amazing ending From a proud Canadian to the two you stay n strong
I am so, so happy that you guys got your boat off the reef and that it appears lightly damaged (mostly cosmetic). Carry on!
I'll say it again. So happy for you guys to come out the other side mostly OK. Take care and thank you for sharing another great adventure.....
Great news. The work begins. Sending you positive thoughts.
If there was ever a answer to the question "why would you buy an old boat" That gash in the hull would have been a death warrant to any new production boat. She would have opened up like a tin can.
What a great video - full of hope and amazing people. So nice you got to rejoin the tribe. Bill and Grace (Calico Skies) are wonderful folks!
Great episode guys! Such a great ending.

Well said Alie. Can I have an Amen? Amen!! This whole part of your journey is full of miracles. Stay safe. ❤🙏
When you buy an anchor buy the next size up. Big ground tackle is the best investment you can make in a boat.
Jamie and Behan Gifford are wonderful people to have on speed dial! We have their sister boat and they have been so helpful to us for years!
Good luck, guys.😊 stay safe.

Thanks!
Thanks Derek!!!
Can we talk about the sunset behind you,as you anchored, stunning. The importance of a community of friends, can’t be overstated
Most people are good! ❤

so happy for you guys,
Just found you a few episodes ago when you grounded her. I didn't know you were Canadian 🇨🇦 Cheers from home. Look forward to your adventures
Miss you guys here on the gulf coast. ❤
Lovely well edited video well done loving the Chanel 😊

Look at that you two 29,470 views in just 11 hours! Great video. We are all so happy that you are making it through this.
Lucky sailors. Congrats.
Had no idea Calico Skys was part of your group. Very cool.
Calico Skys was my main course while going un and out of hospital.
Hey guys glad to see yall back sailing 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲⛵⚓⛵✌️✌️✌️🍻
Community and relationships are the key to a happy healthy safe journey/life. Peace.
So so happy for u guys! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻I hope one day we can cross paths!
Thank you Polynesian and Blue Water Community. 😀

You are right about community... Regardless of where you are.. If you have a community around you, it is surprising what can be achieved...
so happy for my fellow canadians
SO HAPPY FOR YOU BOTH ! USE MAX CAUTION ! TAKE IT SLOW WAIT FOR GOOD WEATHER ...
Thanks for sharing ! Learned a lot. We were on Fakarava in April. No vegetables, no fruit, no fresh food,
It is sold out very fast after the supply ship arrives....

keep it up
I'm interested in you guys hardtop, is it possible get more info how it's built? Looks awsome
Kiana is one tough boat. Most reef groundings result in bits and pieces of wreckage scattered about.
That little DiveBlue unit is a game changer for sure, but how about those locals free diving to 40ft like it was nothing :-o Good to see a positive outcome from this ordeal with all of the incredible support from the village and from other sailors. Cheers

Ripping out all of your old insulation & spray coating in cork would be a great idea.
I can't get my mind around 3 PLANKS!!!
Great to see you moving again. Tried to check out the swag but I'm getting a 404 not found error.
Thanks we need to update that :)

Neosporin is great
Hear the anchor and have it bent back… it’s not a lost

Canadian immune system! this was very funny!
Re: their "work boat", perhaps you could pass this along to them? Since you know the Pacific Northwest, you'll have heard about the Columbia Bar, and general dangers in these waters. Reef should be protected! Restore the reef.
Agree, i can't believe no one has commented on the massive distraction to the reef
I’m a diver. When I get a cut on my hand or foot and wish to continue diving on my trip:
Wash cut really well with clean water.
Ever thought that there’s to many inexperienced people deciding to go cruising these days? Good luck guys
I had one of those legs last week :) they said a cyst popped and my leg got real big. 😅
Don't throw that anchor away. It can be straightened.
Yes any decent engineering shop should be able to straighten it get them to put some weld lines top & bottom of the shank to strengthen it.
Spash zone. Liquid steel yes
Where is the link for the divblu y'all used
You guys are young. Just put that in the experience hat and press on. You'll find as you get older, the people you'll be impressed with most aren't the rich celebrities, super successful etc, etc. You'll be impressed with people who are truly kind.
Water seeping through the hull @ 7:13?
Well ya look a lot happier
Normally the boatyard in Raiatea is the better option. They are very well equipped too and the prices are much better than in Tahiti
Thankfully, the situation didn't escalate into a full-blown disaster. Now that you've seen how quickly things can go wrong, have you reconsidered getting insurance for your boat?
Insurance is for loosers
Or going home?
Get some oregano oil and quickly put it on any cuts, scratches, bites or stings to prevent infections
Ground coffee beans is great in stopping bleeding on cuts and scrapes and have natural desinfectante. Always keep them in a jar on the bottom or your kitchen.
When did all this happen? I heard six months ago.
whats the diving gear called
please
To cool
You mention that they are your friends and tribe but no one came to help? I find that very strange. If I was that close, I would definitely come and help.
Yep - agree - very curious to the tribe's backstory.. I'll assume their positive intent. They may have told the tribe to stay. I'm amazed how they problemsolved the situation.
Don't worry, everything is going to be all right.
just found out about you 2 @ the Lt Lauderdale boat show / aka from the Caribbean sailing community bench watched your last 6 videos ..... and checked out you patron .... but YOU say you videos are 6 months after the fact ?!
You guys dodges a bullet
Blessed be splash zone epoxy and dive blue hooka.
Thanks to your isolation, the bacteria are still very sensitive to antibiotics. We could talk sometime about community and the successful evolution of our species, you are dancing on top of what makes Group Processor Theory successfully describe our successful evolution. That's a real thing.
