It's probably less 'government' and more 'the people who did commit the crimes, then showed up as 'concerned citizens' only to be outed by someone or themselves due to 'stupidity' and it repeating making people who are 'concerned citizens' looked at as a possible suspect.'

That first story makes my blood boil. Back in July, my dad and I were in a gnarly head-on collision. Dad was driving and his side was so crumpled, he couldn’t open the door from inside. His right foot was pinned under the brake & accelerator so he couldn’t move much anyway. He told me to get out bc of a possible engine fire, I got out and called 911...and saw 3 men helping us and finally opened his door. After that, I started blacking out and the pain took over so I went to lie down on the grass where I was accompanied by a very sweet gentleman named Steve who helped to calm me down. I will always be thankful for their help, and I could never imagine wanting to sue THEM for being so kind.

Once, the phone of a good friend of mine was stolen at school, while the guys who stole it were caught I found the phone hidden in the table, being the good guy I returned the phone to the teacher because my friend and the guys were downstairs talking with the cops. The teacher immediately took me to the cops and said I had something to do with it because he didn’t believe me for finding the phone, I was arrested and suspended from my school, after that the police found me not guilty and the case was dismissed but the school director didn’t wan’t to believe me and kicked me from the school, I was almost finished with my course after two years and they just kicked me off the school so I had to start all over. I had nothing to do with the theft, it really fucked me up. I keep thinking if I just didn’t touch the phone I would’ve had my degree in engineering.

7esseanime yes I sure was but what I didn’t know is there is a law that makes you a suspect if you have had a stolen object in your hands, but because I could prove I was innocent, and my friend helped me with proof, she told the cops we were really good friends and I would never steal her phone, the cops believed her, the school didn’t, she tried everything to stop the director from kicking me off the school. The director was this type of asshole that only believes his own conclusions. So I still got kicked from the school, even when the cops said I was innocent, I asked my lawyer if I could do anything about it to stop the director from kicking me off the school, he told me there wasn’t anything I could do. If I would file a lawsuit against the school I was going to lose it because I had been the “suspect” of a theft on their property. When the school director said they were going to kick me from the school I couldn’t believe it. (Sorry for bad English)

Course the man was out cold, seat belt intact. No time for this shit, dad just yanked the man out of the seat, saving his life and breaking his shoulder in the process. The dude sued everyone involved and I mean EVERYONE, he managed to even track down some onlookers to sue them. Honestly dad could have been just fine to do nothing legally since the people in charge of the scene deemed it too risky to try the jaws and he probably would have died without them.

Currently an EMT and holy shit that sucks to hear. Also know this because I am an EMT I'm not protected by good Samaritan laws fully, If I do something off clock and something like this happens I'm still liable because I'm medically trained. A few years back I was on my way to work, full uniform and all, a car blows the light I'm stopped at and rails the other car spinning it into a telephone pole. This car was parallel to me about 10 feet away, lady in there crying for help and we locked eyes, the light turned green for me and I drove off almost in tears. When I went through EMT training these types of situations were discussed a bit and pretty much laid out that the world today does not protect heroes, so be one at your own risk. I do not consider myself a hero regardless of what I do and that moment really destroyed me because of situations I was taught similar to these Reddit discussions. It's a fucked up world while I consider myself a good EMT I'll never forgive myself for that moment.

A woman in my townhouse complex was being abused by her boyfriend. She ran into the backyard and he was screaming at her outside. She went back inside. I heard her yell "Stop! Please!" And then "Omg it's broke!" He literally broke their back door. Their screaming was so loud i could hear it two houses away while they were inside and i was inside and just happened to not have tv on. So i did what many would do and called 911. 911 got the address and i reiterated multiple times it was happening in #4, and i live in #2. Dispatcher repeated it back to me. Anyway, a few minutes later a cop pulls in. Two cops jump out and sprint up to MY door. They bang loudly and demand i come out. I said through the door that it was not me, Im the one who called. Cop just kept demanding i come out, said he would break down my door. So i came out and said it wasnt me, i called it in. It was #4. Trying to whisper so crazy #4 boyfriend wouldnt know i called 911 on him. Guy refused to believe me and actually made me sit on my steps while the other cop took my DL to the cruiser to check me out. Comes back 5 min later and tells this extremely aggressive cop it's not me it's #4 and i have no record. Mad cop throws my DL at me very hard and then walks over to #4. He calmly knocks. Guy answers and i hear them chat it up calmly. About a min later i hear laughing and cops say to have a nice day. WTF man, so i called the sheriff to report how that all went down and the sheriff told me not to ever call him again to criticize his deputies or tell them how to do their job. Seriously, ive never called cops again and that was 11 years ago. It's pointless.

Dont tell your friend they're being cheated on unless you're 100% sure they wont get back with that person. Told my childhood friend who I'd grown up with that his girlfriend was cheating on him after I caught her in a nightclub with some random guy. I gave her a thousand chances to come clean because I believed her when she said it was an accident and she told me she would tell him herself but never did. It was only when he talked about getting engaged to her that I just had to tell him. He thanked me, we talked about what he can do and I left him to think about it. They split for maybe two days and in that time other people told him they saw the girl cheating multiple times with that one guy so it was 100% confirmed. But then they ended up back together and out of nowhere I got blocked by both of them after a few weeks of minimal contact. So by trying to do the right thing I lost both of my friends and now my friend group is all over the place because of it with some people saying I shouldn't have said anything and I'm now inclined to agree. Anonymous tip offs would be the best bet if I could redo it I would.

You did the right thing to protect your friend, don't let anyone tell you that you didn't. Just like any choice, right or wrong comes with it's own sense of consequences. Think of it this way, you find out, confront her like you said but keep it to yourself, ten years they go though a nasty divorce and he loses money and other things in the process. Now for some reason she tells said friend you knew ( say it's to hurt them more and ruin a friendship who knows) and they confront you and blame you for the whole situation all while probably for years it eats at you specially when the problems start to arise. We can't predict what people will do with information but you damn sure acted like a true friend to prevent what will most likely be a disastrous relationship. One of the hardest things to do is save probably from toxic relationships, they usually have to learn that lesson on their own since emotions are extremely unpredictable.

First Story: 4 years ago, I once had female co-worker who came from a poor family and had a difficult background. We talked a lot and then, when her younger sister became sick, she was in a pinch. She asked everyone to lend her some money, nobody did. When I lent her some, she promised she would return the money when she had enough. Some weeks passed, her mother passed away, she needed money for the funeral and I lent her, again. Fast forward 4 months, I thought she would have saved up enough to pay me back. Some context, back then I was still in college and was just a part-time worker so I kind of needed the money back. Guess what? She disappeared, along with all of the money which she owed me (totaled roughly 952$) not a word, no contact info.
Second Story: 2 years ago, when I was studying abroad in Japan after my college graduation, I lent some money to my roommate for minor stuffs who is 4 years younger than me. I kind of knew him before we started our overseas study so I thought he would return the money to me later. He was a wreck and refused to study, got kicked out of the school and even back to our country. What is worse is that I found out later that this mofo comes from a wealthy family and the reason he asks me for money is that he....*drum rolls*... gave it to his girlfriend (whom he met at school) who owed a lot of money for unknown reason and yet, this mofo dumped her much later anyway. He owed me 12,000 Yen (equals 112$).
I am from a South East Asian country, so 952$ and 112$ was a shit ton of money for some college kid like me.
There were some other minor instances when I helped someone I got "played" instead, but these two are my biggest "No good deed goes unpunished" examples for me.
From then on, I sworn to myself that I would never lend anyone money or go out of my way to help anyone, ever again. FUCK BEING A GOOD GUY.

I got out and noticed that there were no cars in front of her for at least 25 meters. I was held at fault for half because I hit her, despite her abruptly stopping. I asked the agent "so, can I just for from 50 to nothing in the middle of 5oclock traffic with no one in front of me for no reason and make the other person behind me pay?" And they said "it would be fraud if it was found you had no reason to stop". I got half back for my car. I actually have one for this. Back when I was in college I stayed up a lot of money doing tutoring and my little part time job. I saved a good chunk and it was enough to go have a summer of the lifetime when I graduated that year. My mom called me to tell me that my aunt was in a bind and needed some money and she gave it to her and she didn't know how she was going to pay for a house expense. So me being the generous person I am I said yeah sure you can take the money out of my account. During this time I was in the Harry Potter Club on campus and we managed to fundraise enough to have an all-expense-paid trip to go to be opening in Florida. All I needed to do was find my plane ticket over there so when I went to get my money back my mom said she didn't have it and that she wasn't going to pay for the trip back. I asked her again if she had the money and she said she would give it to me whenever. I'm pissed but Let It Go. Two years later my laptop finally gave out on me and I was working a very small crappy part-time job and use the savings to try and fix my computer before giving up and just buying a new one blowing through everything I had. It was around Christmas so thankfully with some few sales and bundles going on I got a pretty decent laptop that still works great today with no problems but all of my savings were gone. My mom thought that the first of the year will be a great opportunity to pay me back the money she borrowed after watching me struggle for a good two months With my computer troubles that I needed for work. Had the nerve to say paid in full. And still gloats today that I couldn't have gone to the Harry Potter theme park when it opened. Yeah from that moment on I decide to never let any family borrow money again.

One time, I found Someone's lost wallet near the entrance of the store and my mom and I returned it to his house (he was living with his parents). We come back and find him, sitting near the store, so we offer him a ride. I don't like talking negativly about others, but He stunk INCREDIBLY BAD. His body odor was Legendary levels of stinkiness. After we dropped him off, my mom and I had to find a way to cheaply get the smell out of our car, because we couldn't afford someone to shampoo the seat he was sitting in. We bought Febreze, Antibacterial wipes, and did our best to get the smell of pure sewage waste out of our car, but it lingered for a good week or two.
Also, my mom and roommates tried offering a place for a former homeless friend of my roommate's (it was her and her son that moved in) and those two became the most obnoxious roommates we ever had. Here's a list of what happened:
    - They never took showers, so our living room would smell like something died in it
    - They had a dog that they neglected to take care of. It was a Yorkie/Poodle mix and it had longish fur. She never brushed it and no one was allowed to help take care of her
    - Soap and body wash was stolen
    - A box of my mom's prescription Fetanyl infused patches were stolen
    - She was often loud and obnoxious, where she'd turn the TV up to almost full blast and my room is next to the living room.
    - She would often break things that weren't hers.
We eventually kicked them out. Despite my Cynophobia (fear of dogs), her dog deserves better

The guy who got picked on took the other guys side and shut me out a little. Made me question the guy tho and how reliable he was as person. Kind of worked out ig

I'm glad the man that helped the homeless man getting jumped knocked that girl out. I'm totally against domestic violence but when a female is attacking a male and he defends himself by hitting her all of a sudden he's a violent women beater. I was attacked at the beach by a girl during a fight between my male friend and her male friend I was just watching and suddenly this 6' 200+ lbs girl(I'm 5'8" 150lb) punches me hard AF in the back of my head. not bragging but I'm a 3rd degree black belt in tae kwon do and been practicing mma regularly for the last 18 months. so when she was coming again for another hit I blocked and countered and she hit the ground harder than I intended and the crowd that gathered turned on me and started to grab me and hold me there till the cops arrived. I ran and found an officer patrolling the beach and explained the situation myself and after questioning the crowd and heard she unprovoked hit me first then tried again before I defended myself. she got arrested. but I decided to not press charges so they released her. but it's fucked how our society screams about gender equality but has a coronary when a female gets hit in the process of attacking someone.

Once I was at an outdoor church service (COVID) and there was a woman in the back standing up next to her husband. Even though I hate interacting like this, I decided that I would be kind since it was Easter and go find her a seat. I found a folding chair and went back and asked if she would like it. She said “Oh sorry, I just had back surgery and I can’t sit down.”. I walked back to my seat red faced from embarrassment with every ones eyes on me (not in a bad way but like because they didn’t know what I was doing walking around with a chair). Never again.

As soon as I read the first few lines of the first story, I knew exactly where it was going because I heard from a lawyer once that although it may be a moral obligation to save someone, it is not a legal obligation and you probably shouldn’t because if you “save them in the wrong way” they can actually sue you. For example, doctors say that when giving CPR and doing chest compressions, breaking their ribs is completely normal and is worth it to save their life, but they could actually sue you for that.

Helping my grandmother. With anything. She’s a narcissist and constantly belittles people for the smallest things. When my mum lived with her, she made us vacuum like 4 times a week. And the house was pretty much spotless before the vacuuming. I missed one spot, behind a door in the bathroom. One spot. She screamed at me, instead of saying “oh sweetie you missed a spot!” She said “ECHO(not my real name, just the character in my profile pic’s name) YOU MISSED A SPOT! GET OVER HERE NOW!!!!” Since I didn’t feel like taking the vacuum out, I decided to use the small handheld vacuum. I used it for the stairs earlier and my grandmother got mad at me for not using the vacuum for it. A large clunky vacuum wider than a single stair is a really big hazard and it has fallen down the stairs almost breaking them before. It’s a safety percussion, and also less agonizing. When I got out the handheld one for the bathroom, my grandmother screamed. “DONT USE THAT THING, USE THE VACUUM” I almost said “this is a vacuum, just a small one” and to this day I wonder how she would have reacted. But I grabbed the big vacuum, spent like 2 minutes setting it up, turned it on for 3 seconds to vacuum a tiny spot, then took another 2 minutes to put the vacuum away. She’s done shittier things than that, and if anyone wants me to tell a few of those stories feel free to ask.

I felt it was right to tell her not to listen to them. She ignored me & continued to argue back. Fast forward to a class I had with her & she was like “Were you the girl on the bus?” or something. This was a surprise being that I thought she ignore me because she was too prideful at the moment. She began to get really clingy with me since & called me her friend when I didn’t want to. I’m sure it was probably hard for her to make friends I guess, but she was really annoying! I may come off as a bitch but I’m so glad I stopped seeing her after high school graduation.

Where I live, there are people everywhere pretending to be poor and begging for money or people asking you to "donate" something after giving you a free magazine or a rose that will die off after a day. Also, there are a lot of con artists asking you if you can change them some money, only to steal it from you without you even noticing it. I also heard that the actual street beggars (if there are any) will spend whatever you give them on alcohol, which will make the entire situation even worse. And that's why everyone around me, including my family, friends, and strangers on the street, discourage me from ever donating anything ever. At about 13:00 or so, the story of Mom kicking out her daughter over daughters' personal problems, people don't understand how she can still love the woman whom kicked out her own child. Think about this: The one person whom carried You for nine months (technically ten months, but whats four weeks?), there is an inherent deep need to LOVE a person, even while despising whom they are. It is a strange dichotomy. It is truly crazy making, I feel for the poster. It is hard to dislike the person whom gave You life; harder still, to live with Your self for not always liking their decisions and 'hating' yourself for the resentment. Do You always Love Your Mother, if so, hug her tight for all those that can't do that because their own mother is toxic. My own mother told me years ago, "No, You can't move back but (my child) will always have a place." (Her husband had kicked me out of my place while they contemplated divorce) That was over 14 years ago (her and her husband worked it out but he left me with three months of unpaid rent) and they are still together but I had to clean up the mess they made, all because "Your mom said You wouldn't mind" when I called my mom she said "I told him to ask You." WTF?!? "He's Your husband, not mine. He's not my father."; fast forward fourteen years and we have been homeless for the past two years, and no, she didn't go back on her word, my father wouldn't take us in, and conveniently moved to South Carolina, after the shelter kicked us out because 'Your (my) disability is a liability'.
If I knew then what I know now (NOBODY looks out for ANYONE. Abusers protect Abusers and victims are further victimized when they seek help from anyone in a position to supposedly help), I would have stayed where I was and continued the life of sexual/emotional abuse. Sometimes, the devil you know is slightly more evil than the devil you escaped from. FYI: Shelters don't actually want to HELP people, they just want to hide us, as we are the scum of the earth because we are too sensitive, can't take a joke, don't know how to handle our man, etc.
If my Nana (my moms step mom, not even related to me by blood) hadn't taken me in for those first few months after getting discharged with an unusable left arm due to a blood clot, my mother wouldn't have insisted we stay with her when we weren't telling her what was going on under my Nanas' roof, because f her, then it became a "I'm her mother and (a grandmother) they are coming with me." It is about control, not care.
Thanks again, Brattleboro Women's Crisis Center; now called the Women's Freedom Center (Williston and Chase Street and the others I know about, in Brattleboro), thanks for making me and my kid statistics, no we are not emotionally stable and I still have that Disability you had to get my power chair for. Thanks for setting up therapy for me, oh wait, that was me that reached our and set that up and they wouldn't take me because I couldn't attend every week. Ya'll didn't care because I wasn't Your problem anymore and my folks wouldn't have driven me and wouldn't let me drive, because my folks see different issues with talking to counselors. So, Yes, Sorry if Ya'll thought I was pretending to be a "crippled cunt.", but my physical ailments aren't in my head, but the shit Ya'll pulled is.
It's alright, Karma is more a bitch than my mom taught me how to be.
