Hi beautiful viewers, we've decided to make our pinned comments a little weekly diary for ya'll. I had a lot of fun making this video, one thing I've always noticed is that youtubers tend to not really talk about themselves much, it leaves me wondering about what kind of people they are so i try to put a little of myself into every video. there was lots of anime i wasn't able to talk about in this video but hey, you only have so much time. Also, don't worry about our views. we choose to make videos like this despite the algorithm because for bonsai pop our BIGGEST hope is to garner an audience of people who actually enjoy us, not just our content topics. other than that, man it's been a wild couple of weeks. we have been busy busy busy. after working full time on youtube for so long i feel for mangakas on a spiritual level, it's just create create create. but it's fun and having you watch makes it all worth it. patreon is going well, we love seeing new people pop in there and getting to know them in the discord, its a really great community. anyway, this is all the time i have today. i can't wait to read all the comments, im excited to see you all next week.

Hey Mike. Wanted to say that, being a relatively new anime fan (only 14 months), I've been focusing on a few seasonals per season, along with at least one classic. For example, last season I watched The Promised Neverland, Kaguya-sama and Domestic Girlfriend (regretted the last one a bit), and along with those, I picked up Steins; Gate. This season, it'll be JoJo's. I'll try to start picking up older shows too, from the 2000s at first (FMAB) and then move on to the 90s (Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion). Don't think I'll be able to get into 80s anime just yet, but I think I'll get into it as time passes, and gain more experience. Basically trying to get the best of both worlds, and achieve the best experience for me.

@@aggelossourelis1040 all good choices, and i loved domestic girlfriend lol, dont be ashamed haha. one of the cool things about 80's anime is that there's a lot of movies, you can step into it without having to dedicate yourself to a long series like jojo. i definitely recommend starting with ninja scroll if you can find a way to watch it, its a regular length movie and it's awesome.

@@BonsaiPop good to know. As for DomeKano, I'm not ashamed at all ;p just a bit disappointed from the quality of it, compared to the manga.
Another question... is Akira from the 80s or 90s? I've heard great things about it from everyone, and now, you included. I was planning to watch it at some point.

Hey, I was wondering if you can do a video about Sunbow. As far as I heard, it's a famous Japanese animation company that helped develop American cartoons like Transformers and Jem. I was thinking that since Sunbow's lineup was developed partially in Japan, would some cartoons in the 80s be considered anime by proxy or American Anime. What's your opinion?

As long as we remember them and continue to recommend them they won't die. I grew up with Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and Dragon Ball Z, but due to me being under 10 at the time I didn't know about any of the other more Teenage and Adult oriented anime from that era like Berserk, Akira, Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ninja Scroll, and Trigun. I ended up hearing about them after I got back into anime as an adult from various videos on TH-cam, and now they (and many others) are among my favourites. I've in turn recommended them to younger anime fans, and thus the cycle continues. :)

In a lot of ways, being gay is "punk" in it's own way, and things like X-men, and anime like Sailor Moon/Dragonball, and some of the crazy obscure stuff my half-sister would give to me for my birthday every year really resonated with me and helped me become me even though I sometimes felt really alone in a world that hated me. I started my high school's anime club alongside my senior friend at the time. Watched classics like Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust, Robotech, Eva, Cowboy Bebop (which I think is overrated but still "a classic?'"), Ghibli films (Princess Mononoke, that MASTERPIECE), etc.
Went to school for game art, which never worked out, but part of the curriculum involved learning about 2D animation before segwaying into 3D, and the 2D animation education really resonated with me and expanded my appreciation of the art form in almost every way imaginable. I still hope to somehow break into that and make the gay battle shounen show of my dreams (Steven Universe meets Dragonball/YuYuHakusho/Hunter x Hunter).
Not sure what my point is but thanks for the fantastic video, I resonated with it.
Unrelated: A new anime movie came out here in Japan last week by my favorite studio, Trigger, called Promare. Please watch it (when possible lol). It's everything I've ever wanted in an animated film.

I come from a time when anime was not as easily available. At that time there was no such thing as a bad anime. I watched everything. Bootlegs, heavily edited shows movies on tv at 5am. Syfy channel movies. I love that things are so readily available now. It does pain me that the classics don't seem to get much love anymore. With so many options and new shows, there isn't much reason for newer anime fans to check out older shows. Have to be current to keep up with current conversations. That is why i appreciate you talking about some of the older shows. Many of the shows you mentioned are fantastic. I could make a lot more suggestions, but i will only give one...check out Great Teacher Onizuka!😁

5:30 Punk was born in New York via the Ramones. Punk is an American creation that made it's way to Britain via the Ramones. If you're a history buff you should know this, and if you're intellectually honest you will not ignore its genesis with the Ramones.

Love the video, only “ complaint” is the vastness of information online as a substitute for college. Honestly for me film and animation study classes helped me learn a rhetoric to talk/argue certain animation. Online is great but being in a real group of people is so different, not saying one is better but it’s a different experience. Also I got a degree in psych so film studies was a fun way to get credits.

Even though I don't watch anime I really enjoyed your video! That "personal anthropology" aspect was very insightful and, as a matter of fact, at the time of seeing the video I was reading "Supernatural Horror in Literature", an essay by H. P. Lovecraft on the history of horror - from its dawn to the weird tale of his time. Guess I did a fair share of "antropology-ing".

Probably one of my favorite classics is Serial Experiments Lain. Every time I watch that anime, I walk away looking around at MY reality and questioning the validity of EVERYTHING. Like, with how much the internet is embedded in everything we do now, what is reality? What is fantasy? How do we even know that the reality that we live in is the real reality? How do we know that everything and everyone isn't just a simulation?
I'm serious, I walk away from that anime asking these questions all the time.

Hmm something I noticed when you mentioned Fist of the North Star being classical but not a classic. Now I find that odd, in Japan, Fist of the North Star is a classic true to the core. It's often memed and referenced to the point that even if you haven't seen it you know the basic story and characters. Now this maybe the fact that the generation who is the main working force in media are the one who grew up reading and watching it, now this may be the case with something like Ashita no Joe a few generation prior. The reason I bring this up is a "Classic" should have no boundaries like age and demographic, but now what about national borders? Some timeless classics of film can be boundless in that case, like Star Wars or even The Great Escape. But is there a similar sense for anime, animation would be a different story due to the influence of Disney. This all may fall upon if that series or film had the chance to cross the border, one case like that would be Nagai Gou's work over in Spain. Due the recent craze and realization over in the states for his work thanks to Devilman Cry Baby but before this his works were niche at best. Now over in Spain, where they had the broadcast of Mazinger Z allowed for this series to become a Classic for that nation. One reason we can note that there wasn't a influx of Japanese animation in the states is the fact of America's own robust animation industry, which didn't allow many shows to be brought over to the states. Now the 80's is a different story all in all. Due to the geekdom of Japanese animation forming in the subculture. Which allows for an audience to form and initiation of the incubation of said classics.

After watching this video, I now know why your content resonated with me. As someone who was introduced to punk and anime at a very young age. I'm only a year older than you actually. My aunt who's always been more of an older sister figure in my life introduced me to both. Which sounds less weird, when I explain she's only seven years older than me. First anime I ever saw was Vampire Hunter D and then Ninja Scrolls. Both blew my child mind. Being that we are from the golden era of cartoons, they were an important part of my childhood. As I'm sure you now know, cartoons were heavily censored in the states during that time period. So as a kid who already loved campy action and sci-fi films of the era. Once I saw "cartoons" could be the same way, it gave me a completely different perspective. I unfortunately had a falling out with anime cause at eleven years old, I moved from FL to upstate NY. I lost access to my cool aunt's adult anime rentals. Thanks to lovely pirate sites I've been doing some crate digging more recently. I share your mentality for your love of history, wanting to know the origins of things. I did want to make one minor critique. It's a big misconception that punk music originated in England. The truth is that it's American as rocknroll. Which was another one of our lovely exports. I'd also like to point out that most of American music genres that were popularized were created by black Americans. You name and they created it. It's truly a travesty they don't get the recognition that they deserve on influencing so much of our culture. The punk as we know actually came out of the 60s "garage rock" scene. Three bands that greatly influenced them were the New York Dolls, MC5, and The Stooges. Which went onto help inspire what we know as the first wave English punk scene. But if you ever listen to what influenced by it was American rocknroll, R&B, Soul, Delta Blues. If you're into history in general and haven't read it already. I highly recommend "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. It's the most raw accurate and un-whitewashed version of our history. If you haven't gone down the American leftist history, that's another rabbit hole worth going down. Anyways hope all is well! Keep up the great videos.

Galaxy Angel was an anime and visual novel I recently discovered in 2016, but was made starting from 2001. You consume the two forms of this series for two different reasons, the anime for comedy and the VN for an actual romantic narrative and tactics based games, though there is a manga based on the VN, but good luck finding it because Broccoli Books is dead.
Also unfortunately, the only version of the VN we have access to in the West is an... Okay translation of the original PC version which I can tell for certainty is NOT the definitive version, that title goes to the Playstation 2 versions, and a second trilogy of novels would be continued exclusively on PS2.
The only Galaxy Angel media we can casually obtain here in the West is the anime, the comedic form we see it as is a result of Broccoli being late with their VN games and Madhouse needing to make up a bunch of shit for the girls to do with the little information they had. Needless to say, our Galaxy Angel anime experience could have been completely different had the VN been on time. That said, it is very fun to watch if you like cute girls in funny situations in the setting of outer space or on an array of different planets. Also, Nozomi Entertainment is selling the Blu-Ray editions and has the first season on their channel.
That said, I would absolutely love to do anything possible for us here in the West to experience the Galaxy Angel Visual Novel because it contains wholesome romance content subtly inspired by The Art of War, implemented via the interractions of main male lead Tact Mayers and "5 characters", the dateable girls. For example, my favorite is the vertically challenged, cute but cynical bunny eared cutie Mint Blancmanche. She represents sincerity and your ability to be truthful and honest. Also quite the litmus test for detecting lolicon, she is actually 16-17 through the first trilogy and 21 in the second, but she looks closer to 10 (even stated by Tact himself) standing as tall as Wee Man. She also has telepathy. I can talk about the other girls later, but for now I want to end this with a plea to visit my channel and see the Galaxy Angel VN for yourselves, I am currently working on Mint's route.

Man... I used to hate my country’s local channels and little i knew that they were gonna teach me A LOT about anime. I’m from Puerto Rico and I don’t know if it was because it was cheap for them to buy and air... but in the 90’s, very early like 5am to 7am before i went to school, (all dub in spanish of course) i saw Zenki, Saint Saiya , techno man then they started airing Rurouni Kenshin , Records of lodos war and DB (original) way before the west started airing most of those shows.
Tho i started seeing DBZ in fox (1994 i think), it frustrated me that it started over to Raditz everytime Goku arrived on Namek...stil it was AWESOME. Puerto Rico started airing the uncensored DBZ episodes which were epic... then YEARS LATER , Toonami came to be and let me finish the Frieza Saga etc. But then... Adultswim arrived and that was my oblivion with anime.. starting with my fav of all time being Cowboy bebop, loved trigun and Yu Yu Hakusho (which was the first one to introduce me brainy strategies with Kurama i’ve never seen before, reason i love death note was because of yu yu hakusho)) Inuyasha was cool... felt in love with Samurai Champloo being my second favorite anime and now I seen way more anime that i can remember... So now that i think about it... I’m freaking grateful of my local tv channels for giving me that gift (Never thought i would say that).

Bro I reeeaaally hope you've played No More Heroes with your anime/punk philosophy. If you haven't, you really should play No More Heroes and honestly get familiar with all of Grasshopper Manufacture and SUDA51's work. You'd love them. Their motto is "PUNK'S NOT DEAD".

My top 3 favorite anime of all time currently.
    1) Dragonball (except for Kai)
    2) Cowboy Bebop (only anime I would call a masterpiece)
    3) Fairy Tail

No mention of La Blue Girl (ha ha)? Seriously though maybe someone can help. Netflix released a new show "Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet." The premise seemed very familiar to a show I remember from the mid 90s and I was hoping someone could tell me what it was called. Our video rental store had a series of VHS Tapes with maybe 4 episodes 30 minutes each, but they didn't have the whole series. What I remember is there was a war on earth and the start of the show involved people fighting around, or possible for control of, some kind of vortex. Our hero got sucked in and lost consciousness. When he came to, he was sometime in the future in a medical bay on some kind of caravan, and the vortex was still present but technology had sort of regressed. But enemies were still attacking the caravan. The one stand out that I remember involved the fact that when people matured past adult hood (like mid-life 40s ish, not elderly) biologically they lost the ability to have kids and didn't have a sex drive anymore, and this was causing a population drop in addition to being attacked all the time. That's what I vaguely remember, probably a lot of it is wrong or jumbled with other shows I've seen. Anybody know of anything like that?

    Hello Bonsai Pop,
I'm not sure of you guys will see this, but have you ever seen a movie called The Dagger of Kamui?
It's an anime movie from 1985 based on a book of the same name. It's pretty good (and weird)!
Might make for an interesting video!
