I can definitely relate to that sentiment of parents not allowing you to watch various things as a kid and raising you in a sheltered way and then you want to experience the world once you're finally free from that umbrella. Anime was also a way for me to explore stories that shaped who I am today, whether it be something silly like Goku finding out that girls don't have balls in Dragon Ball or serious such as the discussion of what it means to be human and AI wanting to become human in Ghost in the Shell. These are stories that shape our lives and I think taking deeper dives into future videos can help better explore some of the deeper themes in these stories.

There was a section you talked about people who revolutionized their industries, be it anime or video games or music and that they were "weird"
In order to make something no one has ever seen before, you have to think differently than anyone has ever thought before. No one who sits around and follows the status quo will be able to change things. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, maybe you can improve and refine the existing culture, but at the core it would still be the same. But to make real changes, you have to do things that aren't normal. Things most people may not even like right away. And it will be weird until one day, it isn't. There are a lot of negative connotations in society with things being weird, and sometimes it can be bad, but I love the weird.

    1. I love you so much for making and sticking by that Afro Samurai video. I've struggled a lot this year with being black in this country and what it means, and seeing people genuinely care and speak out has kept me sane.
    2. It amuses me to no end how much my mom doesn't fit the archetypal mom of this channel. The more stories I hear about other experiences of 90s childhood, the more I realize how damn lucky I was that she had faith none of those things were harmful.
    3. Wooooow I lucked out that being an anime nerd child just got me anime nerd friends and the rest of my classmates mostly just left me alone.
    4. It's still not a lot, but I just upped my patronage; have more of my money!

I found treesicle when it was in its early days. Talking about sonic, metroid, and Mario. "The story you never knew" videos were very interesting and I felt it had more personality than game theory. But then FNAF and the horror indie game gener as a hole blew up. Thats what the channel was a while. I thought it was fine at first but then I got tired of it. So much that I was happy to seem them put out something other than those videos whenever they came up. But after Grant admitted it was for the money(which was understandable), the horror videos became less and less and I felt like the old treesicle was coming back. A bit after bonsai pop started, I saw treesicle was coming to magfest and I couldn't wait to see you guys at a pannel....but I didn't because me and my friend was hungry at that time. Whenever cons start back up, I know I'll see Mike and Tyler. But I'll always be disappointed at myself for not seeing the band as whole.
I'm saying all this because in terms of content, bonsai pop is healthy. Its only healthy because it relays on us the viewers rather than youtube as Mike said. I wanted to tell you guys that bonsai pop feels more personal than treesicle. Grants video on kill la kill, I feel, was the best video I watched from his voice overs. Mike feels like a friend Talking to us about his life stories whenever they come up. I know they relate to the topic of a video, but it takes alot to tell someone about a life you once had. Good or bad. I wanted to meet you guys in person to give yall hugs and say "thank you for staying true to yourselves. Even when things were tough, I am proud of you guys for haveing the strength to get back on your feet."
I know the team has been split in half and both channels are their own thing, but I wish both treesicle and bonsai pop only grows and gets better from here. Again, thank you so much and never for get who you are. c:

Brother, you gotta always aim for that authentic self and I have nothing but respect for what you're doing! I'm a huge fan of long-form videos as you get to explore the themes and topics that you just can't with the 20 minute ones, so I'm psyched for the change. In fact, your 45 minute Outlaw Star video got me interested enough to finally get over the hump and watch it all - and I loved it! You've introduced me to so many wonderful shows that I wasn't even aware of and the love you have for this format of brilliant art mirrors my (and so many others') appreciation for what it's capable of. I'll just end with a quote from a book I refer back to every few years when I need a mental/emotional reset - “When you are content to be simply yourself and don't compare or compete, everyone will respect you.”

I don’t even really watch anime anymore since the early Toonami days, but this channel’s enthusiasm for the anime that came in the late 90’s, early 2000’s and beyond is so refreshing and nostalgic for me... i really appreciate and respect it. Thanks for helping me not forget the magic of that era. Keep on rocking bonsai pop!

This is the one channel on here that has made me think hard about myself and the world around me and also brought tears to my eyes. That is why I decided to buy the displate (ganna be the centerpiece on my living room wall), the new zip up hoodie, and am about to be a patreon. Can't wait to finally be a part of this Discord community!
38 years here and still loving anime since the early 90's. Also from Massachusetts.
Anime has gotten me through a lot as well: depression, discrimination, no dad, losing friends to was, through combat PTSD, losing a fiance to an OD, and I can even say that it has prolonged my life from fatal thoughts long enough for me to come to my senses. This channel is also like therapy like anime is for me, which I look forward to every episode. You're a rockstar in my eyes.

When I was a young kid always felt dissatisfied with most of the cartoon that I watched beyond a select few, especially once the 90's stuff stopped airing. There were a few gems here and there, but when I was 13 and I discovered anime, it felt like a whole new world of storytelling opened up to me. In the short time I first watched Bleach and Naruto, I had seen Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, and Death Note, back when TH-cam was a wild west filled with piracy. It showed me that animation can be more.

The bonsai pop videos have really resparked my interest in anime, particularly the 70-90s era stuff, and i love that your approach to this is personal, retrospective, and philosophical. I also was reading comics, playing video games, and listening to punk growing up, and i will never forget renting things like project a-ko from my local blockbuster(RIP), Or buying grey market bootlegs and how much i enjoyed these shows. as a guy who has been watching since the first video this video really hits home and is really something special to me you guys have always put out amazing content with every video you have put out and I mean some really thoughtful and insightful stuff most channels don't say or intuit half the stuff you guys put into a video especially in the amount of time you guys take and when you do make a video longer (much like this one) it comes out even better since you put the time to good use and the best thing about you guys is that your not just intelligent and profound but your also honest and emotional in a good way, you not afraid to tell us about your sordid past and how you guys are feeling and in a world that actively tries to kill sincerity that is absolutely refreshing
I have no problem with you guys taking a break especially since you guys are practically my favorite content creators and I would like you guys to take care of yourselves, these last couple months have been amazing but you guys could never keep up such a pace nor would I want you to I love when you guys make longer videos like Outlaw Star and the Kenshin video on redemption (both of which are masterpieces in my mind) and have no problem with the channel going in that direction it only makes me look forward to the direction of the channel even more thanks for all you do and for getting us through and especially rough year you guys are the best and continue to never compromise on what you think is right cause it is definitely the spark that makes your content as amazing as it is and we could use as much of that as possible nowadays

Man I've felt like this about a lot of choices I've made. My choices chasing something that made me happy led me to uproot from America all together.
I worked real hard to try to get a good job translating and working only to get a weird generic job that made me feel empty and left me with no time for myself and my hobbies.
One day, I suddenly got laid off after slaving at a this job to people I hated, the 1% class, for 2.5 years. I said fuck it and moved to Japan and then South Korea. It was here that I became happy with myself and created my the community that I built around myself.
This channel feels like my life story through your videos. I love the realness and the raw emotion. I was hooked ever since I found your Samurai Champloo video because that one hit me. Thank you for all you do and I'll be subscribing to Patreon soon.

This video really resonates with me. I grew up loving anime loving punk rock. I also found myself saying "if it ain't punk It ain't cool". As I got older I was able to find enjoyment out of a lot of different genres of music. I found hip hop, trance, folk and even Mongolian throat singing lol. I look at you and I see some one inspirational. I see someone that took his own path and even though it was hard was rewarded for it. I pretty much sold out. I was to scared to follow my dreams. I also got a degree in programming thinking I would make tons of money. Turns out I hate programming and I am not good at it. I work in an office and pretty much hate every minute of it. I look in the mirror and I feel like I am meant for something more. I'm not going to just quit my job but I am definitely going to spend more time expressing myself creatively. So thank you
