It's hard to describe exactly what truffles taste like because they are unique from pretty much any other food; the best way to describe it would be to imagine the smell of fresh gasoline at the pump. Not the chemical smells, but that sweet earthy smell that catches your nose first when it first starts pouring out. Truffles have the same kind of really strong earthy scent and taste, almost as if they have been fermenting in the rich soil for thousands of years. They also have other underlying tastes which can be similar to mushrooms, nuts, cheeses and even fruit depending on the species of truffle, but what brings them all together and what is essentially the trademark unique flavor of the truffle is that rich fossil fuel-like intensity.

It seems like everyone's mad at her for being the person to find something that's expensive. yea she made a lot of money in that deal but there are actual operating costs to business. truffle prices are nowhere near gold prices (I don't think she knows how much gold is actually worth). saying she makes a ton of money because what she's finding is worth a lot is like saying a diamond mine worker must be rich because diamonds are expensive.
Agreed, it takes ages to train your own dog to be able to find truffles like hers do and, from what I understand, most foragers just buy dogs that are already trained by someone for much more than that dog species would normally sell for. Not only that, but videos like this that are well edited and trimmed down to *JUST* the interesting or entertaining parts can tend to mislead ignorant or oblivious people into thinking that she made those $400 just in the 10-20 minutes it took them to watch the video. Not only that, but that basket that she showed at the end of the foraging part was what they'd found after HOURS of foraging, and that was not even a whole pound, especially seeing as they hadn't been processed yet (meaning even with the bits that get trimmed away and the dirt that is washed away, that was not a pound in the basket). I forage for mushrooms that grow above ground like Chanterelles and Morels, etc. and in order to make anything resembling a living doing this you either need to have years of experience, a college degree level of mycological understanding, and work 10+ hours a day when the good stuff is in season, OR you need to have excellent sales skills, and connections to MANY well off chefs/individuals in your area that are willing and able to charge out the ass for what you offer. Also, mushrooms/truffles have become MUCH more well known in recent years, meaning there is more competition between foragers/distributors for what was already a small customer base. The added availability has caused the value of truffles and exotic mushrooms to fall quite a bit, making it harder than ever to make a profit, much less a living. Most people that think this is a way to get rich quickly realize after only a short while that it is by no means easy, and generally not worthwhile if you're main objective is to earn a good living. It's best practiced as a hobby that you can occasionally earn some supplemental income from if you get lucky and find a good growth, or if the weather during that year's season is particularly favorable.
I think the some people are misunderstanding this. Truffle is sort of like salt in a way, as it enhances the flavor of certain things, but by itself it's not good. As you would not take a bite out of a truffle, you would not stuff a handful of salt down your throat.
@@jeffyproductions8595 There are many different species of truffles, so idk what you are eating, but it is certainly not the kind of truffles shown in this video, or the type most people are talking about using in fine dining. The truffles in this video and that most people talk about are closer to the consistency of those orange "Circus Peanut" candies but obviously with very different flavor. They should be like semi firm marshmallows in terms of texture/consistency.

+Bruce Wayne I disagree entirely. I have worked with truffles my whole career and they add immeasurable value to a dish simply for their effect on the palate, not to mention the effect of truffles on the psyche. For truffles are more than just a food, they yield a complex collection of aromas whose action is akin to that of pheromones. However truffles have to be of the correct species and as she explains in the video they aren't always ripe. When a customer gets a bogus Chinese truffle masquerading as a perigord truffle, worst case scenario, or merely a truffle harvested before properly ripened, they wonder what the fuss is about and why they are so damned expensive. Properly used truffles are not wankery.
