I can't be the only one who makes the combo noises out loud, including the THUNK-THUNK helmet hit, and has done since first playing this 30-odd years ago... right?
Maybe... maybe a little strobe warning for the Ax Battler segment? I'm not that sensitive to the flashing lights but that gave me a headache! Apologies if I am a dunce who missed a warning. Great video though :)
Hey bransfield. What do you think of the new WILLOW series comming out with warrwick and val. Continuing the story.? And I thought tyris was based on red sonja
As a very young kid the sound design on this game hooked me. If you look into it, pretty much all of the iconic death screams (even the skeletons) are ripped straight from the Conan and Rambo movies and standout big time if you played it a lot.
Fantastic video, have been looking forward to this one and it didn't disappoint. Just got to the stage show bit - had no idea it existed, but it looks amazing.
Glad too see notifications worked for me this time lol. I've missed a good few of your videos between youtube dropping the ball and missing patreon emails because of ebay alerts :/ Happy to support regardless. Love your work!
What always irke me about the Mega Drive Golden Axe games is that they looked progressivly worse with each sequel, why didn't Sega use the Streets of Rage II engine on one?
When I was a kid I had the mega games 2 cartridge, me and my friends would play as Gilius and Tyris (she had the most magic and I like Gilius overall look) and play right to the end.
I don't know Turok too well, but I've always been meaning to give it a go at some point. So maybe. But from a different angle, as I'm less comfortable with it.
Main point, I was 13 in 88/89when I first played this game in the arcades. It instantly became my favourite game of that holiday. Its sound track brings happy feelings to this day.
I feel like the biggest hurdle in getting a new game that follows in the spirit of the original arcade games is the aesthetics. I don't think that audiences are necessarily going to be put off by the amount of skin on display, especially since it's genre appropriate given the Conan influence and the dress code is present for pretty much everyone who isn't a dwarf or gnome irrespective of gender, however trying to pitch a multiplayer game without much scope for selling cosmetic items is going to be difficult. Maybe you could totally reinvent the game as a class based ARPG with an online play component where players can summon one another for co-op and/or invade each others' games (I'm imagining something like From Software's Dark Souls formula without the stamina limitations, so something more action-focused where the combat is more immediate and aggressive but your character is still relatively fragile and players need to be aware of enemy tells to understand when to dodge and when they have an opening for attacks and combos - sort of less over the top than DMC/Bayonetta but rewarding good play and incentivising builds through class based upgrade paths to grant players abilities, new moves, and buffs that can be purchased with EXP. Maybe the barbarian class gains some really good attack modifiers and additional movement options that prohibit the use of armour, so they're incentivised to be a glass cannon, magic characters can be focused on collecting a bunch of gear to supplement their MP reserves, Dwarves can take a lot of damage but are slower than the others so they rely on heavy armour to allow them to take more hits and draw enemies towards them through talking smack in order to allow for casters and barbarians to do lots of damage or provide buffs and recovery depending on the situation. Maybe also pull a bit from Altered Beast and have some methods that allow for transformation into other forms as a temporary devil trigger style mechanic for each class with enhanced move sets and high DPS. Obviously the main difficulty in terms of player engagement would be to try and make sure that collecting things that aren't build-appropriate worth it for barbarians, who are basically stuck with shoes and weapons as their only relevant equipment if they're playing alone, so maybe it could be a situation where any character can wear anything and wield everything if they upgrade their base stats in order to take their build in that direction and players can pick and choose abilities without being locked in to a specific archetype, but upgrades would be available to incentivise going without armour for XP boosts and greater mobility as a risk/reward proposition and make it appealing but not necessarily represent a full commitment unless you're really mastering the combat and want to receive that bonus 100% of the time. I guess that at high levels of play everyone will be running around in their pants and selling most of the found equipment or trading it with other people who need it to supplement their lower base stats, or doing so on solo grinding runs to get powerful more quickly at the cost of weakening their intended play style until they put their equipment back on and go back to using magic but I think that it's not too far off of what people already do in Souls-likes anyway, only with an added mechanical justification.)
I think we just need passionate fans to bring it back like what Christian Whitehead did for Sonic Mania and what DotEmu/Lizardcube did for Streets of Rage 4.
Golden Axe 3 is not that bad, the presentation takes a nosedive but I played through it a few months back and it's actually alright. I hated this game at first.
Not sure why sega can’t do more of what they did with panzer dragoon, house of the dead remake, and streets of rage 4 and license their titles to good developers since they clearly don’t want to do anything with them.
as owner of golden axe 3, i would disagree with poor quality of this game, i would ask you to compare number of music tracks, different levels, different enemy sprites, number of playable characters, number of different magic animations, dragons to ride, game modes to play, endings to archieve...i believe it wouldn't be the poorest game at the series. i ll start: dragons to ride^ GA1 - 3, GA3 - 4 enemies: 7 against 9 playable characters: 3 and 4...

@@segue2ant395 good point, I can't add it to the video now but will put it in the description

Golden axe 1 and 2 have imo the best overall battle music of it's era. Tower is gorgeous and pumps me up which is extremely rare

The original one was one of the few arcades that, if you got good, you could beat it with a couple credits

Funny and informative as always.
Been looking forward to this one. Will you do the Turok games next? Incl. The gbc games?

Great video!! I like this style, going through the history of a game i hope to see more like this 👍👍
I mostly played Golden Axe on C64 and Amiga since that was what everyone had here back then. Still love the C64 music. Great essay, thank you

Love the first game nice retrospective love your work

One of the few classic games that I played through in its heyday, I never really did get to grips with the mechanics though
Thank you!
The iconic music!
Don't give two specks of a turd about this series but I love your videos so here I am

What’s wrong with having tribal enemies?
It's an old fashioned racist caricature.
13:30 Oh cmon ppl played it a lot on mame it wasnt Unknown

Actually the fact that the song "Ironic" contains no actual examples of irony is a textbook example of irony. Do I believe this is intentional... nah.
It didn't go anywhere. It's a game. Without the ability to displace from a place to another.
