  • Enable cc for English subtitles! Many Singaporean viewers told me on the previous videos that I need to be careful in JB (Johor Bahru), Malaysia. Apparently, it is a not-so-safe-city. So I decided to stroll around the city of Johor and talk to strangers. Let's find out if it is really dangerous.

Let me share this . Singaporean's advises were not without basis. I've worked in factories in Singapore where I have to deal with subordinates not able to turn up for work because they were robbed early in the wee hours of the morning in their way to work in Singapore . I have properties in JB and experienced break ins when we left the house unattended for the week . I am not putting down Malaysia but it is a fact they have a long way to assuring every tourist of safety.

As a Johorean, i am very happy to see a video about JB! JB is indeed more dangerous if you want to compare to Singapore (in fact, Singapore and Japan has one of the safest country in the world). I would love to bring you to walk around JB by any chance.

You are a rightous and objective mindset person. It is good to make it known to public so that JB authority will heighten the awareness and improve the tourists and local safety. This is right! Dont be negativiy and claim Singaporeans are mocking Malaysia. Btw, Singaporeans are tourists too and spend tourist dollars in Malaysia. Is a win win situatiin. Many Malaysians come to Singapore to work, they are protected and happily earning Sing dollars. Is just a small token, JB should improve the safety for the local and tourists.

I think countries like Malaysia, especially, JB, as foreign traveller, you just need to constantly keep watching your back and don't leave things unattended. The locals are smart also, they target certain nationalities that would cause less sensation. There may be a lot of unreported crimes as well.

My family went to visit relatives in JB. So we went out to eat, one with a Singaporean car number, one JB car number. Parked it for 2 hours and came back to the Singaporean car broken into, and the JB car untouched. The window was shattered and everything inside was gone, including the things fixed into the car dashboard. Apparently they had tools to dig out or remove the music player, and screens etc. Even part of the seats were stolen.
After that, we never went back there by car. Always take the bus in if we absolutely HAVE to go. If not, we don't even go into the country.

To ascertain whether a place is dangerous (to common folks or tourists), look at the power balance between the police force and underground triads (aka gangsters). The safest place would be one where either the police force or the underground triads are comparatively much stronger than the other. The most dangerous place would be one where the police force are equally in 'power' to the underground triads or different _rival_ triads are equally in 'power' while police is weaker. The bottomline is who is the territory boss. If there is no clear cut boss controlling, there tends to be more dangerous.
In Singapore, the police force is a lot stronger than all the underground triads combined, the police call the shot, that is why it is safe. In Malaysia, comparatively, the underground triads are stronger than the police force (some even say some members of the police force works for the underground triads). So in Malaysia, it is not so dangerous (in terms of petty crimes) in those underground triads' territories because those gangsters will not touch common folks or tourists so as to not attract authority's attention upon them. Those underground triads also have their own 'business' to operate in their territories and they will enforce 'order' by controlling those petty criminals/drug addicts who probably are more scared of the gangsters than the police (think of Yakuza equivalence).
Just don't step on the tail of those underground triad members and most folks will be safe most of the time (unless you happen to be at the wrong place on the wrong time when there is territory fights on-going either between different triads and/or police). Talk to the local, if the local said it's ok, probably it's ok (just don't venture to those places where the locals seldom go themselves). If the local advise to stay alert, it probably is not so ok. Stay as necessary but leave the place at first opportunity.

The one thing I really hate is the face veil which is trending now among muslims. I see no problem with head scarves if the women willingly wear it themselves. However, that's not the case. School girls are forced to wear head scarves and punished if they don't. I also get pissed when I see little toddler girl even as young as 2 or 3 years old are made to wear headscarves in Malaysia's hot weather.

My manager said maybe link to IMH because nearby? anyway I used to it now they didn't harm anyone. I think last time Yishun is much more dangerous because alot of paikia like to hangout at shopping mall, safra, lan shop and coffeeshop but now modern paikia only hangout at trendy spot don't know where... JB is just on next level at night machiam no security at all no police can be found it's all on your own man.

I believe most of us are nice and humble when crossing over, but that doesn't mean on the other side of certain people may not be nice and humble to you back instead they will take advantage of you. I'm sure you heard many cases that malaysia custom sabo sg passport and then ciao for some coffee money if not lock up, one of my friend kena before pay up and faster move on lor so of course we are alittle paranoid. At my grandma's place (somewhere in batu pahat), we can literally leave the door unlock at night as the whole Kumpong keep a look out for each other. If some snatcher decide to try their luck, they will be in for some good old fashion street justice from the whole neighborhood. Penang and Kukop have to be safest tourist spot in my personal opinion.

I suppose the difference is if you go as a tourist or if you either live there or enter JB very often. The more often you go there, the chances of you getting into trouble is higher. I have experienced incidents of pick pockets and snatch thieves. Even robbers breaking into my family car. Many of my friends have many stories too. To the point that I don't even walk around with my wallet or phone. I carry a 'dummy wallet', and all the important stuff is strapped tight to my body underneath my shirt.
