I don’t know why this info can be so hard to find. I’ve searched the crap out of transmissions for lsx swaps and this never came up. Sounds like a better option than the AR5 setup.
Need to make an adapter to run a GM transfer case behind one of these transmissions! Like an AWD 4472/NV149/NV120 would be awesome! I’m currently trying to figure out how to get the NV120(TBSS) case to fit behind one to do the swap on my 98 Bravada that is already NV3500 swapped but I’d like a stronger trans option for the twin supercharged V6.
Agreed. Need three (3) things: (1) an adapter plate to mount directly to the transmission, drilled and tapped to accommodate a 4L60E 4x4 extension housing (to allow modularity in using both 6-bolt and 5-bolt circle pattern transfer cases); (2) 4l60E 4x4 extension housing (off-the-shelf part to keep costs down); (3) intermediate/stub shaft going from 30/32-spline Nissan to 27-spline GM or 32-spline GM. (1) and (2) are cheap. (3) could be a little pricey. This would also work on Nissan auto transmission, so any Titan/Armada/Frontier/Pathfinder/Xterra with an auto could swap a GM TC with the same kit.
Sounds like the perfect trans to use when i ls swap my 2002 Frontier lol The 2002 manual trans is a toploaded 5 speed similar to a z32 trans and the bellhousing is too small to use adapter plate and keep chev starter
Good stuff. Question about these. I have a 1990 2wd GMC C15. I found one of these transmissions for a good price but it's 4wd. Can I still use it in my application? 2wd only? thanks!
Just for the adapter plate and flywheel is $1000.... Not including clutch , yoke , and the actual cost of the trans which used are actually running $500-600. So itd be around $2000+ up and running with this setup and trans....
If it can consistently hold 5-600whp I think that’s a fair price. Clutch can’t really be factored in to the transmission cost. You’ll need a clutch for your power level regardless of the transmission.
Have you seen what people want for a t56 core? I’ll just say that you can almost get a new Nissan 6 speed for what a REBUILDABLE T56 goes for (and parts for t56 are getting rarer by the day). $2k all in for a manual trans LS is very reasonable, especially considering the Nissan’s shifter is in a better spot. The only way this could be better would be if Nissan would have just offered the Frontier with a 5.3 from the factory lll
I have an 02 Sierra 2500HD 4x4 with the LQ4 and I been wanting a good manual transmission option for a long time. The ZF6 is impossible to source and it leaves me with the NV4500 as my best option which is disappointing as hell. Does this conversion also work on the 4x4 version of this transmission?
Thanks man I was rolling the idea around installing the T56 in my 2011 GMC Sierra but can’t go over all that’s done just to much power for the 6l80 lol this changes the game thanks guys I’m new to the channel so today is a good day God Bless!
I have 2 questions about this transmission: First, are there aftermarket shifters available, or are you stuck with that giant thing? Secondly, how far back from the bellhousing flange is the shifter? A T5 is about 26" from block surface to shifter, and since I'd like to use this to replace a T5 (thirdgen f-body), that dimension, along with the ability to run a MUCH shorter shifter, is critical. Thanks!
Discovered the MT6 Frontier and Xterra’s come factory with a Dana44 rear axle (Nissan called M226). So not only will the MT6 handle the LS, but so will the rear axle…Nice!
XxHACKERZx I can’t say for certain, but I’m almost positive only the tailhousing needs to be swapped. I would need to study the OEM parts manual. I have both transmissions sitting here and need to compare to be sure.
I would really like to find an answer to this question. I just bought the kit and it’s for a 91 Chevy short bed. Having trouble finding a 2 wheel drive trans. Would love an email I could get ahold of you on.
04 Nissan Frontier had the FS5W71C transmission. It’s very stout for its intended use, but can only handle about 300 lb-ft of torque. That’s why it was used behind a 4cylinder. Even Nissan didn’t use this transmission behind the VG33 that came in the 2004 V6 frontier. Hope that answers your question
I started following the Swapology build and came across this video. Really great info guys! I really appreciate how open you guys are about sharing your knowledge, especially compared to others in this business. I have one question though.Does this trans have the same tail housing bolt pattern and tail housing length of the CD009? From parts diagrams it appears the transmissions share a main shaft. My reason for this question is it would be cheaper for me to buy a junkyard VQ40 2wd trans and swap the striker rod and the tail housing onto my CD009 to get a toploader shifter than it would be for me to buy or even design and make my own CD009 topload shifter. I have a CD009/LSx swap I am working on but my build needs the shifter to basically be in the middle of the inspection plate. I have gone through a couple design iterations for a relocated shifter but it seems like OEM might be the better option if that could be cobbled together. Thanks in advanced.
BTW, you can not swap the frontier tailhousing onto a CD009. The striker rod is supported by the mid plate and input shaft plate on a frontier, it is supported by the mid plate and tail housing on a CD. If you put the frontier tail on a CD you only have one support for the rail left and it won’t work.

Great video Stephen, your always coming out with the news and greatest alternative for these swaps and damn the quality is amazing.
Thank you!

Now can u use this to ls swap my xterra 4x4 and keep my transmission and transfer case
Hell yeah! Go for it.
Engineers rule! Do I understand that this is a viable option for the z32, 300ZX conversion? and, how's the Gen 5, LT conversion coming along? Thanks
Good stuff. Question about these. I have a 1990 2wd GMC C15. I found one of these transmissions for a good price but it's 4wd. Can I still use it in my application? 2wd only? thanks!
How big is this trans compared to a 4l80e
Man if there were more transfer case options for this transmission it would be killer for 4x4 swaps

Would this shifter position work in a e90 bmw chassis
Have you considered doing an adapter kit for the Wd21 (87-95 Pathfinder)? This I would be interested in
They already make a kit for that transmission. You would just have to use the z32 300zx bell housing on your transmission.
How can I get this Adapter for my 2009 Xterra

Was going to get the ar5 but this has now confused me im lost what to do how much is your kit thks
This is awesome. I would love to put a 4.8LS in my 2005 Gen 2 Xterra since I already have the 6MT. Do you know if anyone makes a motor mount kit ?
Why not a VK56?
@@Agent.K. I didn’t know the VK56 would fit in the Xterra and mount to 6MT.. I would go that direction if it was possible.
@@Green_Leaf
Just need an adapter for the transmission. The rest is basically plug and play. Check out the Newx forum and Driven Desire. Lots of info.
@@Agent.K. Will do! Thank you

2wd frontiers only? The 4wd has a transfer case off the back of the trans correct?
Adapter works with the 4wd trans as well.
@@GSRSteve Is there any way to convert the 4wd trans to 2wd? The 2wd transmissions are less common than the 4wd ones.

If you want to sell me that two wheel drive trans I will buy it.
The price they charge you might as well get a built t56
Are there any OEM clutch options?
I have a 04 Nissan frontier 2.4. I'm wanting to do the ls swap. So my question is can I use my 5 speed trans with your kit

Well looks like I found a 6 speed swap for my 83 5.3 swapped c10

Wife has 426.000 miles on her 2013 Frontier. 2nd Motor same 6 speed tranny. She literally hauls the mail.
What are the dimensions of this trans, particularly length, compared to a t56 (fbody or gto)?
They are about the same girth as a t56 but are about the same length as a truck nv3500
Does the d40 have a speed sensor.?
