Really excellent video to watch mate. Thoroughly enjoyed learning about it, and knowing more about that fascinating and volatile time in VFL/AFL history. I knew a bit about the proposal from that story in 2017, but not in much detail. This was an excellent watch. Great stuff!
I guess it's not too crazy of an idea, seeing how the Super Rugby has teams from Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Japan all in the same competition
That was detrimental to the competition and should be avoided where possible. The Argentinean side and the Japanese side have been scrapped. They've realised the best thing for those countries is to promote their own domestic league and let that develop rather than joining other ones. If anything, it's been a learning lesson. If you look at super rugby now, the South African sides might very well join the European rugby competitions to avoid time zone issues (which has always been an issue for super rugby). Australia and New Zealand are looking at either: 1. doing a trans-tasman comp with one another; or 2. just doing their own domesticrugby comps; or 3. Each doing their a domestic style super rugby comp but then the top sides play off in an international super rugby comp, hopefully with south African sides and potentially with room for Japanese, Argentinean, Polynesian or American sides. That is like an inter-league play-off which we already see in Europe's soccer and rugby club comps. Having such a globally expanded single competition isn't such a crazy idea but it sure as well isn't an ideal one. There's massive cost, travel and time zone implications. If the game doesn't grow as intended then it's even worse. AFL is commercially strong the way it is, which is the most important thing. Unfortunately it isn't global which isn't any fun. Any half decent rugby player can go over seas to Europe, Americas or Asia and get paid to play rugby. That's something aussie rules players miss out on.
I noticed that your video’s time bar is divided into segments for the different parts of the video, this is a small editing thing that I noticed with this video, but this extra detail adds to the quality of these videos, it looks like you out a lot of effort into your videos, you deserve a lot more subscribers!
Thanks, yeah that's a relatively new feature that I wanted to take advantage on with this particular video because the way I wrote it was broken up into chapters. Appreciate the kind words!
That is a pretty crazy idea. 14 hour flights with the time difference, imagine the jetlag. A New Zealand team would obviously make more sense, but I think there'd need to be more grass roots support for it to be feasible.
currently the best way to go at this stage, is broadcasting rights, change the timeslot games are televised around the USA and try to advertise it, with the chances of buildng interest. there is already a certain amount of interest in the USA, through the United States Australian Football League (USAFL), but there needs to be more development in the future, a major way to accomplish this, is by having developmental programs for Americans interested in playing Aussie Rules, it might take a number of years, but in the long run, it may yield results.
I don't think it would be feasible to base an AFL club here in the States, but there are a growing number of us who love this great game, hence the growth of the USAFL. Mate, I've been looking for a channel like yours for a very long time now... Of course, the first few decades would only have some borrowed information from Wikipedia and other places, you can get some pictures/videos and show the ladder after certain rounds; show the important key match-ups that year; and they (the first few decades, that is) should only go for 4-5 minutes, but once you get around the 70s and onwards, each video can go for 15 minutes or so. It could be something similar to the compilations the Brownlow medal shows when they go through each week, one by one. You could have a massive playlist, and it'd get tens of thousands of views. Thanks for the video extravers. I really enjoyed it. Top stuff👍 I have a had a fascination with this particular subject for a while aswell. I, like you, believe Aussie rules football is destined for world domination. With all our clever marketing campaigns and tv rights we have undertaken over the decades, we have yeilded very little traction . I believe we have been tackling this beast the completely wrong way. Instead of starting at the top we should be starting at the bottom. Instead of trying to start a league from scratch and investing millions we should be doing the opposite. To put it simply we should be investing in kids. If the AFL shift their focus on a much younger generation this expansion dream will have an easier path in coming to fruition. I suggest each existing AFL club allocate a town or region of the United states to set up base. And each of those Clubs introduce an Auskick program in all the local schools. Strictly from grades 1-5. And maintain that for 5 years... Then we double down on the same process, this time including junior high for another 5years. As the decade draws to a close the AFL would have indoctrinated thousands of children to the fundamentals of our game. Those kids teach other kids and so on and so on. Essentially letting the children spread the word about our game themselves. But the real kicker is that with each region establishing a kinship with that particular club back home we have created the talent pool this guy was striving for. And then the flow on effect is in full motion. The striking thing about this approach is that each club back home would have created a brother club in the United States essentially creating a US branch of the same club. With a possible future of one club in two leagues, the USAFL and the premiere Australian Football League. . Anyway let me know what you think. The only overseas team should be Tasmania.
This a classic example of too much money and not enough sense.
Just as well this didn’t happen. Could you imagine the logistical nightmare it would have been these last two years? Not to mention the ridiculous travel time. Not really practical at all.
Could've at least had the American team winning the ruck contest in that mock up. Oof.
They should make it like soccer leagues around the world not add international teams to the AFL. THen they could have a champions league after the other countries embrace the sport. It would be so mint!
The only thing is a lot of soccer leagues do have international teams in their league systems, just that they're neighboring. Canadian teams in the US leagues, Sammarinese teams in the Italy leagues, Monégasque teams in the French leagues, Andorran teams in Spain, etc.
However, I definitely think that an AFL Champions league would be extremely interesting
I dont want an American AFL team, I want an American AFL or IRS league! Bring it on, dont worry you would get lots of coach's wanting a holiday in the states.
We yanks really don't want the AFL in the US ( we got the USAFL) and the Aussies really don't care for non-Aussies playing their great game. (see international tournament playing in a local park!!!)
Spot fuckin on mate
Yeah, and any appeal of Australian culture to the US died in the 80's. Who wants our shit now
@@tspoon772 Your obviously a Pom,pretending to be an Aussie
@@gogogeedus thanks american who couldn't tell a brit and an aussie apart if they were right in front of yoy
Really
"Oh Yeah" the AFL lads cant even stand lockdown, let alone, being in a foreign country, away from loved ones
i think new zealand would b more realistic if we were going international because it’s so close.
AFL will never go global but IRS could
Ludicrous !
Good it didn't go through
no u
Well it was a bad idea form the start!
Some of these comments are beyond delusional 🤣
Are you upset?
@@bishgroundwork3089 why would I be upset 🤣🤣the delusion is comical .
The AFL zealots seem to think that if only people could watch a few games then they’d be hooked for life . 😂😂
How’d the China experiment go ?
Gil had to lie big time about how full the stadium was 🤣
How’d NZ go Here I’ll quote the local councillor
“Cycle ways to nowhere is more popular than AFL”
How about worrying about conquering all of Aust before you take over the world .
@@darrenbaxter8042 who thinks that? why are you even watching and commenting? you are obviously upset that AFL is the biggest sport in Australia. Maybe go cry yourself to sleep.
What a ridiculous idea!
yer, its only going to work if that country has its own league.
