it wasn’t just that they were trapped, julie thought that they had been destroyed by the jolts. So going into stand tall she though that she was gonna perform alone. so basically when Luke was phasing in and out he was fighting to stay in existence. So if he didn’t appear then that means he was destroyed and gone forever.
Unsaid Emily makes me sob every time. I have a very strained relationship with my family (specifically my mother) and I wish there are things I could do to go back in time and fix things but I can’t. She went up anyways to honor them which is why she gets so excited when Alex (drum player) comes in bc she has hope again. The theory is it was supposed to have a harder drop (when Julie started singing high alone luke was supposed to come in with low harmonies) so when they didn’t show up for that she really thought they were gone.
Unsaid emily knowing the context too beforehand hits even harder. Its such a beautiful song. Also!! The co-stars performing wrote perfect harmony themselves together!!!!!!!!!!! They were the captains of the ship truly haha
So, I am going to explain a little bit, just to give you more context. The guys are dead, they are ghosts, but Julie can see them because they have some sort of connection. Nobody else can see the but when they are playing music WITH JULIE. Nobody else knows they are ghosts, they think they are holograms of people who live far away and connect with Julie online to play music. Also, Perfect harmony is a song that was written by the actors of Julie and Luke. It was not originally on the show but the actors felt like they needed this for their characters, so they showed it to Kenny, and he was very impressed and desided to add it to the show. A lot happened, in between of course, but I am not going to spoil anything.
When Charlie was in the booth recording "Unsaid Emily" everyone was crying in the equipment room. And the day of filimg those scenes, literally not a dry eye in the room. A few of the crew members were almost full on sobbing. If i remember correctly, they had to take several breaks because the performances were breaking so many hearts.
first second into the video and im like "oh mathew you shouldnt have worn eyeliner, get ready to sob it off 😭😭" thankyou for reacting to more jatp!! means so much!! much love from a fellow aussie
During Stand Tall the reason why the guys came in so late is because they were supposed to have died completely, kind of It's hard to explain but, that's why she was relieved when she saw them and why Luke (the main boy) was glitching
So basically there were four boys who ran away from home to start a band together. The main guy, Luke, always missed his parents and regretted the way he left things with them so he wrote that song, probably hoping to someday have the courage to come home and show it to his parents and apologize. But before he managed to do that he and two of the other guys from the band died. For twenty years the three of them were kind of stuck in limbo until Julie put on one of their songs and they came back as ghosts that only she could see and they started playing music with her.
unsaid emily is such a beautiful song, esp for those of us with really strained relationships with our mothers. theres so much we leave unsaid and sometimes i think "what if one of us died and this was the last thing we ever said to each other?" hurts my heart
I love how he used Trevor’s expression as an example of how they aren’t bothered by it, when Trevor was clearly focused on how the heck his band mates were on that stage
Want to answer the questions you had in some of the songs in the vid. Stand Tall - they didn't all come in at once because before that they were loosing power and not even Julie could see them. Luke was phasing in and out because he was affected the most by it (which is why the other bandmates looked concerned). The guy who it zoomed in on when the drummer came in was one of the original band members (that didn't die) and used all the songs that Luke wrote and released then himself. He was recognising them. Perfect Harmony - not as much answering anything as letting you know that the actors who played Luke and Julie (I forgot their names. Don't flame me in the replies lol) wrote it while they were filming the show and downed it to the director who put it in the show. Unsaid Emily - so Luke and his mum (Emily) had a massive argument because Luke wanted to go to a different state to do music with his band (the others who were in the garage in the flashback, playing the instruments) and she didn't want him to go, so he ran away angry. Luke died before getting a chance to apologise to his mum and regrets it all the time (for obvious reasons). They have been stuck in a purgatory-type place for I think 25 years, until Julie listened to their CD and they came back as ghosts, hence why Julie is the only one able to see them. The other 3 guys were his bandmates. Luke, Alex and Reggie all died on the night they were going to perform for an audience for the first time. They died to really bad hotdogs from a street vendor. Hope this answered some of the questions you asked. Sorry for the super long comment. On a totally unrelated note though, love the fit!
in the show, people basically think the ghosts are holograms, which is the excuse julie gave after they materialised for the first time in the 'bright' performance. that's why in universe their band name is julie and the phantoms, both as a nod to the fact they're ghosts and it sort of plays into the hologram gimmick, too. the guy with the beard next to the blonde girl, carrie, is the ghosts ex band mate from the 90s who didn't die, and he went to the concert with carrie (his daughter) to see if it was really them bc he saw carrie watching a video of them performing. so he's basically shitting himself bc, you know, they're meant to be dead, and he stole all of the music that luke wrote. stand tall is much more satisfying when you know the context and have the emotional impact of everything leading up to that performance, as that is the finale song. perfect harmony is basically a daydream julie is having about luke, while dancing in class with the guy she used to have a crush on, nick. madison reyes (julie) and charlie gillespie (luke) wrote perfect harmony together, i believe partly inspried by 'can i have this dance' from high school musical, as a surprise for the director kenny ortega (guy behind hsm).
Perfect Harmony - the song and scene are inspired by "Can I Have This Dance". The choreography and styling (both costume and set) are nods to the movie Dirty Dancing, which Kenny Ortega was the choreographer on.
Proud to be one of the comments saying about Unsaid Emily :) But really, the whole reason I got into the show was because of your first reaction to their songs so thanks :D
09:51 "I don't know what their dynamic is but I love them. Their chemistry is so good" YES VERY MUCH SAME. Their chemistry is truly out of this world imo
You should do a video with songs from the percy jackson: the Lightning Thief Musical. They are so good! Especially tree on the hill and my grand plan, Overall, it's a really fun time, really recommend. Also, the guy who was Michael in be more chill (George salazar) is grover in it!
5:00 Ever since her mom died she stopped singing and playing piano since it all reminded it of her mom, which is the person who wrote the song she's playing. The people watching her is her dad and brother who is really proud that she sung and played again. Btw the song she's playing is the song her mom wrote for her
I am hom3tly SO anoyed that they cancelled JATP - it’s been 2 years and I STILL love it! It’s one of the few shows that I haven’t ever really stopped watching and listening to. It’s still in my playlists and I watch it every month tbh. It’s such a great song - the fact we’ll get no more songs is just too sad 😢
12:38 this song was actually created by Madison (Julie) and Charlie (Luke) I believe they said they wanted a sort of high school musical moment for their characters. There are documentaries about it somewhere on TH-cam, they used to be on Netflix but I dont know what happened there.
In Wake Up, Julies actor- Madison Reyes, recorded it when she was only 16 which is amazing Also did you know that Madison and Charlie (Luke and Julie) wrote Perfect Harmony themselves and then Kenny Ortega added it for them because of how beautiful the song was- it shows how talented they are
I remember the first time I saw the show, I loved so much 'Wake Up' that I remember telling my friend that the songs were good but not one was at the level of 'Wake Up', until the 'Edge of Great'. Don't get me wrong, I loved the songs but I thought 'Wake Up' was the best they've done in the first part of the show. Now that I've listened over and over to the songs I love all of them equally, but 'Wake Up' is still one of my favorite, with 'Stand Tall'. I just love Madison's voice, and I love listening to her voice!
18:04 yup. He died i think a few months later. They also weren't able to interact at all until years after they died like not existing as ghosts even they just sort of blinked & a decade or 2 passed in moments for the ghosts litteraly. So like look at how old his parents are now. For them it wasn't that long ago.
you gotta listen to Now or Never!! it's the one song that we hear from sunset curve, the band that they were all in before they died. it's more of a rock vibe
In Stand Tall, Julie thought that the ghosts were gone for good, but they were actually being forced to play at a ghost club. She went onstage after she got a ‘sign’ from her mom. That’s why they all poofed in at different times. They were fighting to be able to perform with Julie.
the way my AirPods die just as unsaid Emily came on. But seriously though, I love your reactions so much and the way you look so deeply into everything to give the songs meaning.
Wake up is my personal favourite from this series, when I heard it in episode 1 I knew I had to see the show to the end. Absolutely love Madisons voice. Glad you’re listening to these

I’m not a fairly emotional person, but unsaid Emily just hits hard. I didn’t think I would cry watching you react to it since I’ve already seen it. Nope. I cried. It’s just too good
Julie and the Phantoms was the show my family and I watched during covid, my sister and I started the first episode and my parents made us restart so we could watch it together. Stand Tall is our kind of family song and we sing or listen to it anytime one of us is having a hard time and it makes me really happy to see this show finally gaining more traction (still hoping for a season 2 one day)
Hi Mathew, thanks for talking about your grief even though it must have been hard. My grandpa passed away last week and he also had dementia, and even though its been really hard to manage the pain you, made me feel less alone during a time I felt isolated. Hearing Unsaid Emily again for the first time after feeling his loss made me cry so much with you and in the process it helped me let go of some of the grief lodged in my chest that I didn't know how to get rid of. thank you for another video❤
i was adopted when i was 6 into a very loving home. my biological mother was a drug addict, who struggled on and off to get clean. this past january, i found her on facebook, and i almost sent her a message. but, i got too scared and didnt. a week later, she overdosed and died. hearing unsaid emily makes me think abt what might've happened if i had reached out to her...
I smiled so wide when I saw this video pop up!! I love JatP and I hope you listen to the rest of the songs, they’re soo good! I can’t remember if you’ve seen Now or Never yet, but that one’s my favorite, it just makes me so happy!
Thank you for your amazing reactions and emotions! You honestly need to watch the full show, not even necessarily as a reaction (which would be great ofc), but just for your own pleasure and inspiration, it's honestly one of the best things ever created.
I'm so in love with Owen Joyner's (Alex, the drummer) voice and I'm forever mad that we won't get to hear him sing more because Netflix decided to cancel the show for no goddamn reason
5:56 Oh my god I died here 16:48 MOTHER FRICKER. I've listened to this song many times before and every single time, I straight up start bawling. I mean I am both laughing and crying right now. I don't know why I'm crying, this song just destroys me. My eyes are gonna be red at the end of this song... I was right. *Tears are streaming down my face.* How the hell does this song do that EVERY SINGLE TIME??
If you wanna know how they died, they ate some bad food and all three of the main boys died from it. The fourth boy (the guy in the audience with his blonde daughter) was their band mate, that was why he looked surprised to see them.
Jeremy Shada, who is the bass player (Reggie) is a phenomenal voice actor and very talented! he voices Finn on Adventure Time and Lance from Voltron. It was actually his talent in the other shows that led me to JATP!
In the show they come up with saying that the band are holograms. Also people can see and hear them when they perform so technically in Unsaid Emily which is about his mom she could hear him.
Context of each song Wake Up- this is the last song that Julie’s mom wrote for Julie before her death. Julie loved music, but hasn’t since performed since her mom passed. This is the first time she’s really *played* since her mom died Stand Tall- this is the finale performance of the show (because it was canceled). The boys, when in life, were about to play at a venue called the Orpheum the night they died (opening scene of the show iirc) and as Julie and the Phantoms, they have a chance to perform there again. However they’re sort of being held ghost hostage and are sort of dying a second ghost death? That’s why Julie is the only one there at the beginning, why she looks so pleasantly surprised when Alex joins in on drums, and why Luke is flashing in and out before he establishes his presence fully in the song. Perfect Harmony- Julie really realizing that she has FEELINGS for Luke. Like, BIG FEELINGS. It’s sort of a daydream thing she’s having in the middle of class/rehearsal (fun fact, the actors actually wrote this song themselves) Unsaid Emily- …the context is there already, it’s a love letter to his mom regretting how he left things with her, I don’t need to say much else. Clarifying a couple things though- Luke and two of the other members of Sunset Curve (Alex and Reggie) died a bit after he ran away from home (yes, he like RAN from home, ran from home). It’s not really clarified how long it was, though, or what the fight was about. He wrote the song BEFORE his death, and Julie found the lyrics with some of the other songs Luke wrote for Sunset Curve (the band he, Alex, and Reggie had formed with *insert unnamed fourth member here*). On that note, another fun fact- each of the actors ACTUALLY play the instruments their characters play in the show. iirc they purposely cast actors who could play their characters’ respective instruments because they wanted the authenticity of actual musicians
So sorry for your loss Mathew 😢 I can relate with having lost my grandmother almost to years ago. I hope you’re doing okay. Loved your reaction and I think it was the best choice to keep Unsaid Emily for the end I don’t know if it would have been the same or easy for you listening to the other songs after that.
Just so you know, the actress that plays Julie (Madison Reyes) has released other music beside the songs in JATP that are really good. You should totally check them out!

SO excited to see this one pop up in my suggestions! I do wish I'd got a little more commentary on Charlie during Unsaid Emily... and that the video didn't have the best parts of the song cut... but I imagine that's what the Patreon full uploads are for. Definitely hoping you do a JATP part 3 just because you haven't done Now Or Never yet. As a Charlie fan, I can't be happy until you do all his songs 😅 Yeah, the other songs are great and all but... I’ve never squealed while clicking a video. Can’t say that anymore. I am so excited to watch ❤ I FORGOT HOW EMOTIONAL UNSAID EMILY MAKES ME! Im right here sobbing with you
You managed to put these songs in the perfect order from happy and uplifting to cry and it was beautiful. Unsaid Emily makes me cry every time because it hits so deep but it's so beautiful.
Yay! Listening to my favorite song first! 9:00 He's involved. He's their age if they were still alive. 9:30 They told her beforehand that something was happening and they did not know if they could make it. They appeared when they were let go. 17:01 Food poisoning, that the last member knew about and didn't eat. 18:02 They didn't want him in the band, wanted him to go to college and focus on school. I think anyway. I never cared much for the storyline after a few episodes.

Also, Perfect harmony is a song that was written by the actors of Julie and Luke. It was not originally on the show but the actors felt like they needed this for their characters, so they showed it to Kenny, and he was very impressed and desided to add it to the show. A lot happened, in between of course, but I am not going to spoil anything.
finally, i thought you'd forgotten Julie,, unsaid Emily broke everyone, it's just amazing
I love how Mathew basically already started crying when the music didn't even hit yet, let alone the song itself
Fun fact: this series is an adaptation of a children's series from Brazil, which was very popular in the 2000s
which show
@@tinboy2862 It has the same name as English but in Brazilian Portuguese it becomes "Julie e os fantasma"
@@nostalgica3609 thanks man
Mathew always comes up with such an amazing content and he always makes our day or night even better RESPECT
first second into the video and im like "oh mathew you shouldnt have worn eyeliner, get ready to sob it off 😭😭" thankyou for reacting to more jatp!! means so much!! much love from a fellow aussie
Your eyeliner is absolutely slayyying today Matt!
tysmmm
During Stand Tall the reason why the guys came in so late is because they were supposed to have died completely, kind of It's hard to explain but, that's why she was relieved when she saw them and why Luke (the main boy) was glitching
Thanks for uploading Mathew! You never fail to make me smile 😋🫶🏻
Omg Mathew finally!!You really kept us waiting with this one.
1.I love Unsaid Emily and Perfect Harmony
2.The eyeliner looks great
THANK YOU!!!! I appreciate you so much for reacting to more julie and the phantoms
"Don't gut-punch me with emotion!" - Proceeds to Unsaid Emily💀😂
You should do a video with songs from
the percy jackson: the Lightning Thief
Musical. They are so good! Especially
tree on the hill and my grand plan,
Overall, it's a really fun time, really
recommend. Also, the guy who was
Michael in be more chill (George salazar)
is grover in it!
YES P L E A S E
5:00 Ever since her mom died she stopped singing and playing piano since it all reminded it of her mom, which is the person who wrote the song she's playing. The people watching her is her dad and brother who is really proud that she sung and played again. Btw the song she's playing is the song her mom wrote for her
Matthew fangirling over these songs is so wholesome
Perfect harmony is still one of my favorites, especially because the actors wrote it themselves
Honestly! I sometimes cry when I remember we won't get any more of their story 😭
Julie is a gift, it is an honor to hear her sing
Yay! Can’t wait for part 3! Flying solo is so fun and Cheyenne Jackson sounds soooooo good on other side of Hollywood :D
9:25 I love how Luke appeared with a bright smile on his face like he did not look desperate 5 seconds before 😭😭
I think you would love the villains songs “other side of Hollywood” and “nothing to lose”
12:38 this song was actually created by Madison (Julie) and Charlie (Luke)
I believe they said they wanted a sort of high school musical moment for their characters. There are documentaries about it somewhere on TH-cam, they used to be on Netflix but I dont know what happened there.
These are all the best/most emotional songs (imo), and I love that you have them all together in one video.
In Wake Up, Julies actor- Madison Reyes, recorded it when she was only 16 which is amazing
Also did you know that Madison and Charlie (Luke and Julie) wrote Perfect Harmony themselves and then Kenny Ortega added it for them because of how beautiful the song was- it shows how talented they are
I remember the first time I saw the show, I loved so much 'Wake Up' that I remember telling my friend that the songs were good but not one was at the level of 'Wake Up', until the 'Edge of Great'.
WHA-HOW DOES MATT ALWAYS LOOK SO GOOD WEARING EYE SHADOW ❤
Glad you’re listening to these
I cried with you... This song never fails to bring me to tears. Thanks for your awesome reaction, so glad you enjoy these songs so much, it's a pleasure watching them with you!☺ Now you have to react to "The Other Side of Hollywood" too or I cOmE tO yOuR hOuSe At NiGhT 😂🥰
Omg yes 🥰 thank you Mathew ☺️ you are right her Voice is insane. It is so sad Netflix cancelled this show. I cry every time i hear unsaid Emily.
Also we need Part three.
matthew, eyeliner looks *incredible* on you!
also, as a jatp fan, unsaid emily is legit my go-to cry song, such a gut punch
I’m not a fairly emotional person, but unsaid Emily just hits hard. I didn’t think I would cry watching you react to it since I’ve already seen it. Nope. I cried. It’s just too good
Julie and the Phantoms was the show my family and I watched during covid, my sister and I started the first episode and my parents made us restart so we could watch it together. Stand Tall is our kind of family song and we sing or listen to it anytime one of us is having a hard time and it makes me really happy to see this show finally gaining more traction (still hoping for a season 2 one day)
i’d totally love to see you do a legit reaction to julie and the phantoms. it’s such a fun and heartfelt show!
Im so sad this show got cancled. The songs are amazing. Glad you enjoyed them ! 🎉
“am i in danger 😟” FAMOUS LAST WORDS
i was adopted when i was 6 into a very loving home. my biological mother was a drug addict, who struggled on and off to get clean. this past january, i found her on facebook, and i almost sent her a message. but, i got too scared and didnt. a week later, she overdosed and died. hearing unsaid emily makes me think abt what might've happened if i had reached out to her...
I'm so sorry!
5:56 Oh my god I died here
16:48 MOTHER FRICKER.
Context of each song
Wake Up- this is the last song that Julie’s mom wrote for Julie before her death. Julie loved music, but hasn’t since performed since her mom passed. This is the first time she’s really *played* since her mom died
Stand Tall- this is the finale performance of the show (because it was canceled).
It’s sort of a daydream thing she’s having in the middle of class/rehearsal (fun fact, the actors actually wrote this song themselves)
Unsaid Emily- …the context is there already, it’s a love letter to his mom regretting how he left things with her, I don’t need to say much else.
I loved your reaction! Really hope your gonna react to some more of Julie and the Phantoms!
You should totally check them out!
i am SO SO SO happy that you reacted to more songs, all the songs (and the show in general) are amazing and i absolutely love watching people react to them
Yeah you definitely need waterproof eyeliner to listen to Unsaid Emily, it’s beautiful but frickn heart wrenching
Charlie. I need it 😂
Matthew: "dont gut punch me with emotion"
Also Matthew: "Okay next we're listening to 'Unsaid Emily' :)"
Me: Hysterical laughter
I’ve never squealed while clicking a video. Can’t say that anymore. I am so excited to watch ❤
I FORGOT HOW EMOTIONAL UNSAID EMILY MAKES ME! Im right here sobbing with you
"Don't gut punch me with emotion!... And now I will listen to Unsaid Emily" The way I almost fell from my chair laughing, poor you.
You managed to put these songs in the perfect order from happy and uplifting to cry and it was beautiful. Unsaid Emily makes me cry every time because it hits so deep but it's so beautiful.
The fact its 4 years ago since the show came out
“That’s a bit depressing” oh just you wait Matthew..just you wait
I just want to give him a hug 😢
Thanks
So sorry to hear about your lost but these songs are rlly the type of songs that rlly got me through everything when things were hard so I’m glad you really enjoyed it but I hope everything is okay 🤍
Mathew: don't gut punch me with emotions
Next song: unsaid Emily
Me: yea, if you think that was emotional you are going to suffer that
