  • The Mosin Nagant 91/30 is a terrific surplus military rifle. I've used mine for all kinds of things. I've taken it hunting, enjoyed shooting it in the desert, shot it at long ranges and short. In this video, I give you my honest review and thoughts about the usefulness of the 91/30 and explain why I'm happy to own one.

    In 2021 here in Canada, 91-30’s are now over $400 CDN. Glad I got mine years ago when they were cheaper. Sure is fun to shoot and at least the surplus ammo is still plentiful and cheap. The corrosive ammo is not that much of a problem as long as you clean it as soon as possible after coming back from the range. If you enjoy shooting a bit of history, definitely get one.

    I own two mosin nagants one is a 91/30 and the other is a m44 . Both of these rifles are fantastic and have taken many game from deer , and of couse the largest north american land animal the moose . They have a good bullet grain selection from 150 gr 180 gr and a 208 gr .
    They have never given me any trouble and they are both very accurate out to 350 metres

    great review! But I would like to clarify: While the Soviets had some issues supplying small arms to soldiers at the start of Barbarossa, by the Battle of Stalingrad these issues were non-existent. In 1942 alone they cranked out over 3 million of these rifles. They were VERY well equipped in that sense. That scene in Enemy at the Gates is complete hogwash. In general, I would take any Hollywood attempt at portraying history with more than a grain of salt: Any thing they say has probably been grossly over-dramatized or warped to suit their narrative.

    My son bought me a Mosin several years ago for $200. Love this rifle!! Then a year later he ordered the Archangel upgrade package. This package replaced all the wood with black polymer furniture and also modified it to accept the Archangel ten round magazine! When we go to the range this gun gets more eyebrow raised than the AR-15s and other so called “assault weapons”.

    If I am not mistaken, there is footage of someone shooting a mosin from their roof during the 1992 L.A. Riots. For those of us who lived in California, we know there were times when something like this Mosin was as close to an AK we ever had in gun stores. 5 rounds can definitely stop anything for sure!

    One thing you forgot to mention is that before firing the rifle for the first time after purchase, it is recommended to check head-space and firing pin protrusion (don't want to be puncturing any primers) and clean all the cosmoline off of the rifle so it doesn't gum up the action. Other than that, these rifles are an excellent buy. I got a 91/30 for $160 back near the end of 2014 and I'm glad I did. They're well into the $200+ range now.

  • @jeremyronald

    I bought myself a 91/30 a few weeks back. I had custom stockwork done and for about $200 plus $40 for the stockwork it was so worth it. I even have a knockoff Tokarev to go with it. If you or someone you know wants one I would say make sure you snag it and make sure it's a 91/30. I bought this rifle with the intent and purpose to carry with me while I walk in Bear Country... I've only come across one bear and when I fired a round into the air it was enough to make it turn, tuck tail, and haul ass. Now if I had to use it on the Bear, I do believe this rifle would have put 'em down. Since I've had this gun, I've been to the range several times and have had people come and ask me to shoot it because they thought it was such garbage and couldn't believe anyone wanted one... After they shot it they've offered to buy it from me right on the spot. The gun is very reliable, it's made strong, and it'll always fire true. The accuracy isn't as great as most rifles today, but for the time it was the best rifle for the average boots on the ground Russian Soldier. Between my 91/30 and my Tokarev knockoff, this is what I would carry in the woods with me the next time I find myself in Michigan's Upper Peninsula or the Woodlands of Wyoming.

    I own a 1944 Mosin Nagant M91/30 and love it!! I take it deer hunting every year. you mentioned the bolt being stiff and that's something I've never had a problem with. The main thing I do for that is i make sure it's well oiled (not to say it will work for everyone though). As far as weight, my uncle has a British 303 and his is heavier then my Mosin, I think they are well balanced do to their length and don't really think they are heavy by any means.

    I bought a 1942 M91/30 a couple of years ago and I love it. Made some modifications on it with a little customization so that it is more of a scouting rifle but still can be used as a hunting/survival rifle with a long eye relief pistol scope that mounts to the 11mm dove tail rail under the front site that can easy be removed (majority of the time that is lol). Awesome rifle and definitely makes a conversation piece in the man cave.

A competent do it yourselfer can easily improve the trigger and smooth out the action, and a slip on recoil pad will extend the short stock and make it much more pleasant to shoot. One of these rifles with a good bore will easily shoot inside of 2" at 100 yds with properly sized cast bullets and a good hand load.

    Fun fact: when you fix the bayonet to this rifle it becomes more accurate, this is because the bayonet affects the barrel harmonics and every 91/30 was factory zeroed with a fixed bayonet.

  • @frankcaruthers1779
    @frankcaruthers1779 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent review. I have a 1932 Tula M91/30 and a 1939 SAKO (Finnish) M39. The 91/30 gave me a little trouble at first--cosmoline residue in the chamber that would jam the casing when the barrel heated up--but a good cleaning with Bore Bright took care of that. The M39 is more accurate (2-inch groupings at 100 yards), but I can do just as well at 100 yards with the 91/30 as I can with an M1 Garand...or even the M1 Carbine. The recoil I get on both of the Mosins is no more powerful than what I get from my Mossberg Patriot 30-06 deer rifle.
    The only "issue" I've found is that the characteristics change with heat. The target point moves slightly between a cold gun and one that has fired five or ten rounds, and the bolt gets stiffer when it's hot. After 10 rounds rapid-fire on a 90-degree day, the bolt is hard to close. I'm going to try filing down (just a little bit) the corner that locks in the bolt. (Note that I am not a professional gunsmith, and so I do not recommend that anyone who is not a gunsmith make any such alteration.)

    Great video. Mine shoots great after some little tweaking. I bought a scout scope mount from BadAce and added a riser to put a regular scope on, highly recommend. The scope is a SWFA 10X42. You can see my rifle on a post dated April 12, 2019 and pictures of my 1/4" grouping @100 yards, yes 100 yards. I have shot it out to 966 yards at a torso size target. Here are my simple mods: look up the video for the Finnish trigger mod. Than I JB welded a front metal tube that id drilled out perfect for the front mounting bolt. I used shoe polish as a releasing agent. I used a little JB Weld at the tang to seat it, and sprinkled a little sanded wood on top to hide the JB Weld. This improved the grouping some. But this one mod brought it down to 1/4" moa. I removed the top wooden barrel cover. From the breech, I put a patch that was snug and slowly pushed the rod to the end of the barrel. When I felt the bore feel looser I stopped and marked with a magic marker. For me there were two places. Than I took 1/8th thick cork sheets from Hobby Lobby and a cut one inch long strip and wrapped it around the loose bore area with the magic marker marking in the middle of the cork. And I put a 1/2" piece near the end of the barrel and made sure the metal on the stock and top cover did not touch the barrel. This did two things, fixed the harmonics on the loose areas of the bore and allowed the wood of the stock to help make the barrel more rigid. I had to use some clamps with rubber padding to clamp to get the rings back on. Than I touched up any scrapped areas with varnish. And I only use Tulammo 148 gr to 500 yards, and Monarch 185gr for further past 500 yards. Military grade shoots well too. Never got any other brand to shoot any better groups. Bolt man bent the bolt. I hope this works good for you too.

    I am considering converting my Mosin to a polymer chassis. Recoil management ten times better and lightens the load by at least two thirds maybe more. I saw one video where the guy took the barrel down to 16". I think that may be a bit too short. However, these conversions are setup to take archangle 10 round magazines.
    When I compare buying a AR10 of solid reputation it would be $1700.
    I calculated the conversion of the Mosin to a polymer chassis to be under $1000 probably closer to $850, depending on the smithing costs. However, I think I can do the conversion, it looks that simple and I am a noob. Sme of the archangel magazines have to be machined and notched and I would need to have the barrel threaded just to accommodate a flash suppressor, etc.
    I am weighing it out and honestly I am stuck making this decision.

    A note for anyone considering buying an M91/30: I've had trouble with casings getting stuck in the chamber (and locking the bolt shut) if it gets too hot. This doesn't happen as much with cartridges that aren't the cheap lacquered ones, or if I don't try to shoot more than 10 rounds in rapid succession. And I have a feeling that it only happens in hot summer weather (I haven't had a chance to shoot the rifle when it's cooler outside). The good news is that, worst-case, once the barrel cools down it's easy enough to whack the bolt open with a rubber mallet, or even by hand.

    I picked up a nice hex barrel 91/30 because of the popularity, cheapness ($$$) and because watching the million TH-cam videos they looked like fun to have and shoot, as well as the historical value being a main rifle of Russia. I easily can group within a 6" circle at 100 yards with the iron sights. Also, the ammo is equally inexpensive, although cleaning after shooting has to take care of the corrosive primers. I agree, everyone should own one!

    may be looking into one of these, thanks for the well done and honest review. i guess the prices have gone up since this was made, a out of the way historic gun store has one of these in the mid 200 range. i did not catch the year but it would be a cool piece of history to get to shoot off.

    I don't know the current value of a Mosin-Nagant but if I'm to believe my father he got ours for about $40. But I will say he's known to exaggerate a bit on certain occasions. But if anyone has any evidence that this is accurate please leave a reply to this comment because I can't imagine getting this much firepower for $40

    Is the recoil worse than a 12 gauge target load?

    • @TheRealGunGuyTV
      @TheRealGunGuyTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Coreen Walker Hi Coreen. Yes, it recoils harder than target loads. I would say that heavy duck loads or buck-shot would be closer. Part of the issue is the metal butt plate. If you replace it with a rubber pad, such as those found on hunting rifles, some of the recoil will be soaked up by the pad.

      +Coreen Walker LimbSaver slip-on recoil pads work wonders.

    • @Mark13tol
      @Mark13tol 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Coreen Walker Like Nugrat1 stated, the recoil pads help. There are also a number of muzzle breaks on the market that reduce recoil and muzzle rise. I have some for each variation of the rifle, some are cheap and some are very well made. I am not recommending any, I do own a Howling Raven for the 91/30. There is another very good one made by Texas Precision. You can look up videos for muzzle breaks and decide for yourself if you want one, how much you'd want to spend, and if it's right for you personally. I have owned Mosins for a long time and I have 4 different variants, the M44, M38, 91/30, and the T53 which is the Chinese version. They are good rifles and if you are just getting into shooting but, I would suggest if you are worried about recoil, do not buy the short ones, they recoil more than the 91/30.
      Anyway, I have the shoulder pad I wear over my shoulder and the rubber slip over butt pad I use when I shoot my Mosin Nagants.
