I enjoyed the song actually, I stumbled upon the song whilst watching George Gently and a very good singer called Ebony Buckle sang it and played the violin too. Both very well.
Most versions I hear are two chord progression, some violin. I think this jazzed free-form version adds character to a great song. Wish Sandy was singing though. The bass is perfect.
Interesting that the instrumental introduction was "ShadyGrove". There are millions of variants of this ballad. Look them all up. You'll like them all.
Not bad, despite the usual silly comments from the bearded fundamentalists. Lovely bass sound, great mix, great gig. Now, where"s my Liege and Lief been since I last saw it in 1974? Try the attic, or granny's cellar. Then try & find the record deck......
That’s Ric Sanders on the fiddle. Chris Leslie is playing the banjo. I’m not going to get into a debate about the fiddle playing - which is wonderful (to me). But perhaps it’s the slight processing in the sound that he’s using that you don’t like? Swarb’s fiddle sound - back in the day- was very raucous, raw and squealy sounding (from its pick up)- not a conventionally “beautiful“ sound. Love it myself. But then Fairport rarely do any wrong - to my mind and ears
the bass line on this version is absolutely stellar
Song’s been changing for hundreds of years. It’s still changing. Stop complaining.
Awesome I had the pleasure of seeing them live in Philadelphia in 1985 they opened for Jethro Tull. I have been a fan ever since. Love this group 💙
Saw that tour in Chicago
That may be one of the coolest combinations of words I've ever heard. I saw Jethro Tull like 5 years ago and those old farts were amazing.
Brilliant, the Ikea curtains had me roaring with laughter x
SAME
I am not into folk music at all, but I caught this performance on the TV years ago and it somehow lived with me.
“Get up!!”
This is a superb version.
First heard this in 71. Timeless.
A great very old song. This is a chaotic rendition.
Wow! True balladry lives! I've loved this group from day one - so glad they're still around.
A perfect song.
But the Lief and Leige version remains the best.
Definitely very much better than this one with its silly reference to IKEA.

RIP Sandy.

I really dig this 'celtic punk rock' version!
very well..........................................................................................

Today I learned IKEA is older than expected
made me chuckle
Started out making wool sheets in Yorkshire!
That fourths stuff the fiddler does is very original!
James may on banjo.. nice touch
Wow where are you Sandy…..

Sandy Denny is the only version I'd listen to.
4:50 is from the gods
I "liked" for "How d'ye like my curtains that I got at Ikea last week?"
+bzfgt bzfgt got the Kipper Family "Big Musgrave" to thank for that.
Possible origin of the melody of 'house of the rising sun'
a curtain bought at IKEA kast week??????????????
operalover67 it's funny ...
fuckin legend. Glad you cut off the crazy instrumental
Gonna listen to Sandy
Briwiant
Love this song and the strong bass, but Chris's fiddle sounds awful!

The band had too much of the Jamieson, bejesus.
...last week..not kast..ok
Just good to see a Fairport concert that doesn't end with Richard Thompson's crappy 'Meet on the Ledge'!!!
boring w/o Sandy.
How to self sabotage and ruin a beautiful song in more or less every possible way.
I'm with you on this one.
Pretty strong evidence that they should've given up quite a long time ago.
William Y fuck you
bass too loud. needs female singer
kingalfred Dave Pegg is NEVER too loud.
Bloody cacophonic catastrophe!
