This is the perfect speed for this song. Oh if Sandy Denny was singing it !! But this is an excellent version, and none of the boredom associated with groups playing the same stuff for 40 years !! Beautiful.
How often she has gazed from castle windows all And watched the daylight passing within her captive wall With no one to heed her call The evening hour is fading within the dwindling sun And in a lonely moment, those embers will be gone And the last of all the young birds flown Her days of precious freedom, forfeited long before To live such fruitless years behind a guarded door But those days will last no more Tomorrow, at this hour, she will be far away Much farther than these islands, for the lonely Fotheringay
I saw Sandy do this song many times when they were at teh Country club in Belsize Park, most magical band under-estimated at the time, as I recall a support band, but her voice is immortal as time has shown. We will meet on the Ledge
This is an excellent performance of this iconic song that somehow merged the old with the emerging new back in the day when Fairport Convention, along with Fleetwood Mac and other innovative bands brought a transcendental presence to an idealistic age, at least for some of us who had a dream, as Joni sang about Woodstock. I am not the nostalgic type, and that is why I appreciate what Simon Nichol, Dave Pegg, and Fairport do here playing "Fatheringay".
I've always wondering why in the early years Simon Nicol was on the background in the band, but he has been the backbone of the band after all. Great guitarist, great vocalist. Great band.

@@Notmehimorthem I envy you! Growing up in California, I was first turned on to Fairport when a friend of mine loaned me his copy of Liege and Lief, which had just come out. Later I got the "Sandy" album, which I still have, and fell deeper in love with her work. Decades later I saw a later version of Fairport when they opened for Jethro Tull on the Crest of a Knave tour, with Dave Pegg doing double duty as bassist in both bands! Anyway, thank you for sharing... I've recently been rediscovering both Ms. Denny and the band through TH-cam, and the wealth of great music they created. Cheers!

We were so lucky, these were times of hope and optimism. I also saw BbKing and Chuck Berry in the Country club.
It's a parlour guitar, similar size guitar to most guitars before the 20th century. If you're playing through a pick-up you don't need a large bodied acoustic.

This band which I seen live in a very anti Protestant band anti British and pro IRA I was so shocked when I seen them in Liverpool, I couldn’t believe it to be avoided at all time. I love the British people and all who stand with us.
That was sublime, the bass was just outstanding. Sandy would be delighted, Simon's guitar was lovely. Thank you.
Even an American like me is still moved to tears by this classic song. Simply beautiful.

Beautiful, haunting, evocative and, blimey, I’ve got wet stuff in my eyes.
Every millisecond hits me. Great great version and song.
A lovely tribute to Sandy....
no matter how many times i hear this song it gets to me everytime
Musical perfection, beautiful, moving, can’t stop playing this.
Sandy I miss you although its 50 years since I first heard you sing sing this.
Such a beautiful version - well done chaps!
Best live version of F I've ever heard, wasn't sure it would work without - obviously - a female vocal, but it was a treat.
Josienne Clark and Ben walkers do this brilliantly almost as good as sandy 😊
