Jordan Rudess, the keyboard player, was accepted to Juilliard at 9 years old. This band is quite possibly the greatest assembly of master musicians of all time.
MST Average better drummer, better bass, consistency in vocals and no annoying keyboards in too many instances .... Petrucci is the only key figure.....
@@thatsnice99 IDK if that's an objective fact, but people can still like either one of them more than the other. I personally don't like Geddy Lee and that ruins them for me, except for instrumentally, like YYZ. I can't stand his voice. MST Average ..... for me the DT bassist flutters while Geddy picks specific notes (more skill). I get the voice aspect...it’s more than YYZ ... there is ByTor, Working man live, leave that thing alone live, where’s my thing live. Incredible bass skills AND the bass is often used as the melody. I saw DT live in Charleston and was a bit disappointed in the overall performance. It also didn’t help when Labrie mocked SC when he said “so what do you do here for fun.” So conceited.
@@merpinallday If you had half of a functioning brain, which you obviously don’t, you would know that not once did I say , or even imply, that they weren’t good. I said that time signature changes aren’t what makes a band good. Get off your high horse and read a book. Preferably about understanding and comprehending the written English language.
I've never had the opportunity to see Dream Theater, but my uncle saw them. I asked him what it was like and he said and I quote: "I couldn't listen to music for a week afterwards because my brain was still processing the fact that I had just heard EVERY note and EVERY possible combination of notes."
Their talent is monstrous. Seeing them play is absurd, i would be sweating bullets trying to keep up with that pace and stay so precise. But beyond that dream theatre has some insanely beautiful melodies in their songs and the storytelling ability through both lyrics and musical composition is so personal and astounding.
Home was my first song from them, the one that made me fall in love with them. Oddly enough, I never paid too much attention to the album until recently, and oh my god, the time I've wasted not listening to it. I'm completely madly in love with it!! It's been almost 15 years since I've listened to Home, and only a year ago I dove into the whole album. I recommend it to anyone out there! ❤️
Have seen DT multiple times since the first time in 91 and they've never ceased to blow me away... unbelievable talent at every position on the stage and they all shine.
I guess this would be straight up your alley as you’re good musicians yourselves 🤠. Dream Theater is metal prog #1 and recognized for their superb skills
Next up you'll need to watch Instrumedley live where they take this song, then break it up and add the most difficult parts of seven other instrumentals they've done into one massive "Holy S**t how do they do this??" event.
There is so much going on under the surface in this one that the full pleasure comes after studying this a bit. Petrucci guitar : which time signature? Mangini drums : yes.
I had the privilege to see them performing their entire Scenes From A Memory album live on the 20th Anniversary Tour in 2019 (plus another entire set of their "greatest hits"). I'm not ashamed to say that I was literally in tears at certain parts of the show because of the intensity and passion behind the music. It was a 3 hour long show, and it will be forever engraved in my mind :')
Former drummer Mike Portnoy composed these powerful songs both in lyrics and music. How he dealt with his alcoholism through the twelve step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Twelve Step Suite: Starting with Glass Prison, then “This Dying Soul", Third is “Root of All Evil", “Repentance", and finally "The Shattered Fortress". Lyrics were written by It is quite the musical journey and has quite a powerful message of overcoming addiction. If you listen to it, The Glass Prison takes of with some noise, where their last album finished; “Metropolis” from the album Scenes from a Memory. The Count of Tuscany is an epic journey into music, beautiful parts.
An orchestral-like medley of musical passages and gorgeous melodies. Dream Theater knows how to put together a work of art. A sonic map that visits all of it’s locations and takes us along for the journey
The reason for that is they're All except Drummer Mike Mangini Graduates and professors of their field! And the school they graduated from is Berkley School of Music.
I KNOW YOU ARE INTO METAL,ME TOO, BUT YOU HAVE GOT TO DO A REACTION TO VANNY VABIOLA SINGING " I SURRENDER". THIS YOUNG LADY HAS VOICE THAT WILL PUT YOU ON THE FLOOR!!!!!!!!! SHE IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!! MANY PEOLE HAVE SAID THIS AND I AGREE!!!! I WILL BE WATCHING !
Dream Theater has solidified their status as The “Rush of metal” for good reason. They are all just next level. When you think of modern non Classical musicians that can walk with these guys, all those musicians are legends or almost legends.
Hi Guys! THANKS for liking/reacting to 2 of my most favorite artists - DREAM THEATER and EIVOR!!! Would you consider reacting to some more RUSH (old school), LONDON GRAMMAR (new creative guys).... :)))
There are 108 time sigature changes in this song...watching you two try to nod your heads to the beat at the beginning was hysterical...you looked like broken bobbleheads...😂😂😂
When it comes to crazy instrumental musical genius I can also recommend LTE (Liquid Tension Experiment), which is a prog-metal super group composed of mostly Dream Theater members.
Kenny here again love you guys love your channel I am not going to stop bothering you Dream Theater lifting Shadows off a Dream Live at the Boston Opera House please watch that
Dream Theater is one of the best prog metal exponent on the world (maybe the better ones).. no doubt about it, but if you want to see something ridiculously skilled inside prog-metal world, try Octavision - Tree Lives...
Brilliance personified ! Hands down their recognition to the masses of musicians I assume are aware. Mass media is lagging because they are driven by the revenue buzz. If they can't pump out commercial run of the mill POP it's not viable. Their time will arrive and at least we're ahead of the curve ! Like RUSH it will happen ....
Yup, they are fucking amazing. I still remember the look on my little brothers face ( a great guitarist) in 1989 when I brought him the cassette of their first album!!! PRICELESS Do not try this at home because you will just injure yourself!!!!!
It's funny watch you guys trying to nod your head in rhythm lol Just listen to it, the clapping in the beginning was just Petrucci saying "clap while is 4/4" Keep it up Guys!! You should try some Symphony X later, I'd love to watch it!!
I have a mixed response to Dream Theater. Plus: they sound like what I think they are-Berklee music school virtuosos. Incredible musical skill and talent. This is musicians’ music. Very complex and demanding, it must be really fun for these guys to play and for others of similar bent to listen to. Minus: despite the obvious extreme skill and talent, it leaves me with “So....” Virtuosity for virtuosity’s sake. Lots of sound and fury signifying...mostly just that. Very high quality but I keep thinking Dream Theater wants to be Rush when they grow up. Rush had similar musical ability but were quite a bit more disciplined and restrained in its use, particularly in the middle and late stages of their career. I guess it boils down to what you value in music. If it is complex virtuosity (and that has a lot going for it) these are your guys.
Agreed. “Best of Times” is a terrific example of musical virtuosity in service of an uplifting message. Wonderful song, probably my favorite of theirs. No surprise-my musical background is singing. Will check out the others you suggest
i love when they really use their technical abilities for the sake of the song and express their musicality way other bands are not capable to. but there is a thin line between using technicality for the sake of musical composition and pure wankery. then it becomes boring and overwhelming. This song is good example how to do it right even though it is instrumental song. btw i still think experts how to use various techniques properly for the sake of the music are for example victor wooten and marcus miller. when you start listen and learn their stuff songs from DT become much less overwhelming in general.
Lol your reaction: you dont need vocals......Try Liquid Tension. More or less the same guys, Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess but on bass Tony Levin (King Crimson, Yes, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd etc. etc). Its only instrumental !
however, this is the wrong song to be introduced to dream theater. This is equal to Eminem's Rap God. They make them " just because we can". It's like they just want to prove how amazing they are at what they do. Having said that, this is actually the song i listen the most by dream theater........

u just heard one of the most technically complex pieces of music that has ever been written. with 108 different time signatures
I love how the drummer Mike Mangini has MORE drums on scaffolding above him hahah
I love how people think that time signature changes make you good. It shows you know how to count different rhythm patterns. Yay.
@@justinwalters7953 its only hard for drummers

Petrucci guitar : which time signature?
Mangini drums : yes.
I've been a Dream Theater fan for many years, so I really enjoy seeing people discover them, and enjoy their music.
Oh yeah, check out Liquid Tension Experiment. It has the original drummer of Dream Theater, with the current keyboard and guitar players
LTE has Tony Levin on Chapman Stick Bass Instrument... It is reported that LTE might reunited if they can get schedules straighten out.

They are extremely talented . Reminds me of hard rock bands, a little ELP Yes and their own unique sound just makes an amazing master piece
