I remember this one being really creepy back in the day with the snow and emptiness feeling. The cereal box one was only cool till the plane part. Never could seem to beat it as a kid.

Atlantis was one of my favorite movies. I got this game demo in a cereal box. My CD had some type of glitch because I could not for the life of me get past the beginning mountain area. It was laughably unplayable as a child.

As a Icelandic kid, that intro blew my mind back in the day. So weird to hear Icelandic spoken in a game, and that scene not being in the final cut of the movie made it even weirder.

These Atlantis games really have a horror vibe to them. The ps1 game scared me so bad as a kid, I don't think I ever finished it. This one would have so gotten me too!
    Great video!

Also, did anyone read the digital manual in the files of this? They had this extensive made up ( at least I think it was made up) document talking about the real Shepard’s Journal’s history and where it was rumoured to be hidden. Even Leonardo Da Vinci got ahold of it, presumably to decipher it. Neat stuff to get you invested in the movie’s world!

I think it's safe to assume that Trial by Fire was likely based on early drafts for the movie.
While the Heart of Atlantis is still the main MacGuffin in the game, it's presented differently than in the movie.
In the movie, the Crystal is presented as a living entity that reacts to things in different ways, even choosing a host to use to protect itself when Rourke tries to take it. In the game, it doesn't react at all to being stolen, and Kida remains separate from it. Maybe the filmmakers hadn't fully developed the concept of the Crystal being "alive" at this point?
Despite this, the story plays out much the same as in the movie: Milo leads the expedition team to Atlantis, is betrayed by the team, and eventually joins with the Atlanteans to get the Crystal back before saving the city from a volcanic eruption.

@@PhilOfGlimmer The PS1 version holds up really well as an adventure platformer. I remember it having elements that borrowed from Tomb Raider (such as the rotating items menu, compass) and had competent puzzles. The ability to change characters keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting. I highly recommend it.

My copy of search for the journal either was faulty or I had a crap computer as a kid lol. The frame rate was so bad, I could hear the enemies growling but could not see them cause I would turn and my view wouldn't catch up, so they would kill me out in the snow, it was so scary to hear the growl but no enemy, and then suddenly I was dead 😂

I admit the game isn't one of the best, actually it is quite far from it. A bit enjoyable but not totally.
I remember playing the Search for the Journal chapter, it had music also, but now it's not there anymore.
I think Disney would do better if they released the game only as a prequel to the film, the second chapter is too much out of the original.

  • @NightNinja1998
    @NightNinja1998 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Shame to see these games didn't do very well... I honestly think Atlantis is Disney's best and could have REALLY been a great franchise, if they hadn't slept on it. The other issue it seemed like, at the time, was that critics didn't like this movie due to not being a musical stereotypical Disney film... But that's kinda why I like it so much.
Now I wish that the idea of an FPS set in the Atlantis movie universe would have ended up better than this, cause I could see the concept being redone much better with actual guns even, the movie itself had plenty of firearms and clear death... Sooooo it could have felt very much in-line with the film itself, except Milo using a gun wouldn't work as well, if anything though, most others could have some unique weapon ideas in general. Vinnie could have had explosive launchers like RPGs or just throwing around Dynamite sticks for example, and Kita could have been armed with some atlantian spear that can shoot an energy blast(if not just a traditional bow and arrow).
I dunno, I just wish it could have gone better to have more attempts at games under the franchise. I do know that there is one more PC game that I vaguely remember existing that I believe was just a bunch of mini games focused around each of the team members and their roles in the adventure. It just could have gone beyond these games and the straight to DVD movie, that was originally going to be a TV series called Team Atlantis and it could have had a crossover episode with Gargoyles even, sadly the only 3 that were animated got stitched together into an awkward "sequel" called Milo's Return, there was however even gonna be an actual second movie with a pseudo terminator Helga Sinclair coming back as the main villain of the film.
All of those concepts being said, I still wish it could have gone better back then for the franchise, it really deserved to have been more successful than its initial criticisms against it had pushed. Then again, Disney seems to destroy their franchises that has cult followings so fast, I imagine Tron is one you'd be aware of with the Derez comments, and I'd imagine most know about Treasure Planet far more as well.
By the way, I decided to subscribe, hope to see your channel grow man!

I don't know why but I could not (figure out how to) shoot at all in the Search for the Journal game when I played it as a kid so I just tried to speedrun, i.e. stealth cheese through the game as fast as possible, all while pressing the Help key a lot to hear the last dialogue from the characters from the movie and the lovely Mrs. Packard who said something like 'Yeah, yeah, okay, okay, I'll patch you through' to relieve some of the pressure/anxiety I felt due to the Keepers... aah the memories :)

I had (one of?) these games as a kid - I had the demo one with the plane and the snow BUT it also had the capture the flag levels from the main game (which I did not own, so that's confusing) and as a kid I could never figure out what to do on them because apparently, there were supposed to be multiplayer - so even back in the day I guess no one but me was on it.

Ah yes, I remember playing Search for the Journal long ago. I had 2 copies, one from a cereal box and another included in a VHS copy of The Emperor’s New Groove.
As someone else pointed out, this game was hella scary as the presentation and dark atmosphere made me too scared to play through the first few years I had it.
One of the biggest fuck ups though was the key mapping on this game. When you first boot it up, you can’t move. I spent a year unable to play the game because I was a dumb kid who didn’t know what he was doing. Eventually, I figured out that the controls weren’t properly mapped to the keyboard. In fact, I noticed that you seemed to have ran into the same problem, as in 1:46 you’re binding the keys correctly.
Why doesn’t the game automatically map the keys correctly from the get-go? They underestimated the fact that not a lot of kids or parents at the time might’ve been smart enough to figure it out, considering this era of PC gaming was still new.
Anywho, when I could finally play it, I got stuck at the plane section cuz it controlled like ass. I didn’t have the patience to finish it. It’s cool to see all these years later how much more of the game there was in Trials by Fire; I probably would’ve been gushing at the graphics and screaming from the monsters as a kid. Good times!
