Honestly, sometimes playing RoR2 just makes me want to play RoR1 again. Although I like what they did with 2, 1 just seems so much easier to deal with in 2D. It's a lot easier to just dominate a run.
Yeah I remember when it was announced I totally thought it would fail. I didnt see how you could possible take everything good about ROR1 and make it 3D, thought it would be too confusing or bland since you wouldnt want monsters overlapping. Boy was I wrong
@@TwoTowersPro since it's in a 3d environment, it's much much harder, those bastard wisps can be anywhere and you won't even know what killed you. Altho that's what I think makes the combat in ror2 so much fun, you can die at any moment if you don't pay attention.
@@normalhumanbeing6066 I think that's one thing I kinda prefer about the original. It's a lot less often that you have no idea what killed you, or get sandwiched by a ton of angles. It gives more of a "I totally deserved to die there" feeling, though in 3D I still usually feel like I deserved it.
The music in this game is a fucking masterpiece in of itself. Glad Charlie discovered it, hopefully the game gets some more (well deserved) attention from this video.
YES! Chris Christodolou is a legitimate genius. I'm subbed to his TH-cam channel just due to the sheer quality of his music. He also did the soundtrack for RoR 1! If you haven't heard it, check it out. It's responsible for SO much of the atmosphere of the first game.
I absolutely loved the first game when I found it years ago and when I found out they were making a second one I was skeptical that it's gameplay would work in 3D (first one is a 2D sidescroller for anyone who didn't play it) but man it turned out so good and I'm so happy for that, I absolutely love it too. I'd highly recommend going back and playing the first game too if you haven't as imo it's just as good
My initial reaction was "Holy shit, it's actually RoR1 but in 3d" like everything felt familiar. I think the music and the way they ported things to 3d helped a lot.
Agreed. The jump from 2d to 3d seems like it could totally erase the magic of the first game, but instead, it adds to it and creates a true successor to the original! My boys at Hopoo really outdid themselves. Watching their journey makes me so proud :')
Me: cmon.. say it. SAY IT. moist: risk of rain has an incredible soundtrack it actually slaps. IT REALLY caught me by suprise. Me: he understands the final boss music.. the bone chiller of all. THE NAIL SPLITTER.

RNG isn't even an issue once you start unlocking artifacts which pretty much act like run settings. Unlock the command artifact and you can say goodbye to RNG loot. Unlock the glass artifact and you're now the definition of a glass cannon type character where if you sneeze on a mob it will die but if they sneeze on you the run's dead. Hell, want added difficulty on top of monsoon? Just get: - Artifact of dissonance for the extra spicyness like magma worms or imps in stage 1; - Artifact of evolution where mobs get stackable items every stage you go through; - Artifact of honor so you can only face elite mobs; - Artifact of spite so not only you have to dodge all the hectic attacks on screen, you also have to dodge the bombs they drop after you murder them; - Artifact of vengeance so not only you have to deal with mobs and bosses, you now have to face a copy of yourself with more HP every 10 mins. Or you can stack all the above and some other artifacts on monsoon so you can give up on even trying to move onto stage 2, let alone meeting the boss on stage 6 or obliterating yourself at the end of the stage 8. This game gives you the choice of a completely RNG based run, a god-like run where it gets to a point where you don't even have to move for the entire map to be killed or a run so fucking difficult it will make you rage.
As someone that's played and loves RoR since the beta of the first game, I love that Cr1tikal endorses this game- But as a Commando main, I feel slighted. But hey, could a real character do *this*? (Gets one-shot by a Brass Contraption)
I really wanted to love Commando, he was one of my fav characters from the first one. In the second he just doesn't do it for me. He doesn't have the same pop and snap that he did before.
@@GryphShot commando is the worst character in the first game or at least for me (even though i enjoy playing him) cause it literally me took me like 50 attempts before i beat it on monsoon with him when the only other character that took me a few tries was bandit for like 10. I do love commando in risk 2 and i see a lot of success with him. I do love seeing how these games appeal to our different playstyles and preferences though
@@Jamesonthekingson That's fair. In the first game I struggled moreso with HAN-D, Acrid, and Mercenary. The diverse cast is super fun. I really hope Sniper and Miner make their way into 2.
I've been a player since the game came out of the beta, 170 hours played in total, Beaten Moonson mode on every character. Risk of rain 2 is one of my favourite games, the ammount of options that you get, the synergies for every character, and the power trip when you've gone far enough, it's all too satifying. RoR2 is ten times better with a friend though, so if Charlie's review convinced you to play it, be sure to grab it with a friend or two! I hope this helped you people
Ely Issue is how much grinding there is, I’ve got 600 hours myself n every frame and the game’s fun as fuck bouncing between them but it’s only once you’ve gotten to that point it really opens up
@@normalhumanbeing6066 yeah I'm at around 1800 hours now, haven't been playing a lot recently, but it's still fun to play the base game occasionally, while returning when big updates happen
As a veteran with 3k hours, I personally think that the direction that DE is taking the game will end up killing it. If DE would listen to what their community wants and focuses on that instead of new frames or a new update, then I might start playing it again.
I'm at 1.4k hours near to 1.5k; I stopped playing a few months after Fortuna was released because my hardware couldn't handle it and I was getting tired of the game lol I now came back with a more powerful GPU and I started to enjoy it again, especially Railjack. But the repetitiveness is already creeping on me again slowly lol
About that last multiplayer thing: there's a great modding community for this game, and a lot of those help tweak the multiplayer experience, including some that let you share items between players, and let me tell you, shit gets crazy
From how you made it sound, you haven’t been able to figure out how to keep looping through stages instead of fighting the final boss (which is understandable it took the experienced community like an entire day to let everyone know how to do it). But all you have to do is interact with the prongs on the stage 5 teleporter and it’ll put you through to stage 6, then 7 and so on.
this game is also so fun if you just don't bother with any of that and don't even enable any artifacts for that matter, given that you enjoy roguelikes in the first place lol
@@babadybab9676 in my opinion one of the core structures of this game is randomness. If you get shitty build you need to adapt to it. You can control it to some extent using printers and multishops. And commands takes all of this away It's basically a cheat code. You can't beat mithrix? Oh then just turn on command.
I’ve been waiting so long for this video. RoR2 is an amazing game. Especially when you get into modding. For a game that’s barely even finished, the modding community is beyond fantastic.
Hey Crit, one more thing to mention is the ability to unlock each characters alternate skin by obliterating yourself after beating Level 8 in Monsoon. It’s something that makes me still play because it’s so damn hard to achieve so you need to think what items will help survive so long based on your champ. Plus not to mention if you have the alternative skin you know you’ve earned it. I recently unlocked the new Captain character so I need to now replay and unlock his skin. This should be fun.
He did a review, not a walkthrough. He doesn't have to touch on every tiny bit of detail, he only needed to explain a little about the game, why the gameplay was enjoyable to him and if he'd recommend it. Also, you can unlock the Skins by either playing on Monsoon and Obliterating at A Moment Fractured after Stage 8 OR by defeating the final boss on Monsoon which is much quicker and easier than getting to Stage 8 on Monsoon due to scaling.
My friends play this game all of the time and I thought it looked stupid. After hearing a real review of the game though I’m definitely going to buy it.
I was a giant fan of the first game and I'm in love with the second one too, I'm so glad RoR is getting the respect it deserves, the music, the lore, the gameplay, its all top notch
My *only* complaint is the fact there could be a bit more variety in the teleporter bosses, and I wish they weren't *only* bigger and stronger versions of normal enemies. Even just adding more of them would be great for variety.
Chris Cristodoulou does a great job on these soundtracks. Hes been doing the soundtracks for Risk of Rain 1,2, Deadbolt and he has his own original songs. I recommand checking him out.
Hopefully this video will get more people to get into this game and help The developers expand their team because it’s baffling to know that 3 people MADE THIS ENTIRE BANGER OF A GAME.
I’m happy more people are discovering this game. Got it when it first came out on early access with some of my friends and we loved that shit except that sometimes someone would loot hog too much. We took a pretty big break but we’re back on it now and it’s a blast, glad other people think so too. Pretty crazy to know that the team for this game is like only 2 ppl
It's good too hear Charlie have a change of pace with his review. This game definitely has alot of good challenge and variety from what I've seen so far.
they do limit you though, quite heavily. Things like multimod nerfs or the midleague aurastacking clusterjewel nodes nerf. headhunter self curse shenanigans also just got nerfed. and every league somebody manages to find some way to be immortal and every league after that ability is removed or reworked
There's one issue a lot of people have with RoR2 and It's mainly from the RoR1 community - In Risk of Rain 2, there's essentially no reasonable way to be in control. In RoR1 where the game was a sidescrolling roguelike in 2D, you saw EVERYTHING that was a threat to you at all times. You were in complete control of how much damage you took, even with playing with a friend across the world. In RoR2, an issue I continously run into when playing with any non-european friend is mobs effectively spawning on top of me and doing their attack animation before I even see them spawn. With the artifact of glass that one of my friends love, this means instant death from nothing.
@@chriscolbert2188 Oh yeah a boss that disables your one-shot protection with no warning... Yikes. Please understand also that I almost only play on Moonsoon and I mostly play Huntress or Loader. I couldn't even kill the final boss on drizzle as Mercenary with a shaped glass (tbf the rest of the build wasn't that good) A lot of ppl that have the captain rn have it because they killed the last boss when his third phase was super bugged and you could avoid it completely :/ And It's not like I'm a new player or anything _cough_ prnt.sc/u3ab5l _cough_ 170 hours of playtime may not seem like much, but I also had 300 in the first game.
Fills me with immense joy to hear you love the fucking game just as much as I do. The first one really fucked me good and boy did I go back asking for more, crawling on my hands and knees begging. You really should play the first one as well, the only complaint I have about the first one is the memory issue, I guess it's a 32 bit and loses itself relatively fast if you go too far into the game on a single run. It's 2D ofc but that honestly doesn't matter in my book. Even if it's not a 32 bit game it will take a massive dump on itself sometimes and honestly it's very frustrating but in no way do I hold the devs responsible or curse them for it, the game is just that good. The salt lies with "Shit, I should have beaten the boss." instead of "Damn, they really don't know how to make a game."
So I got this game for me and a friend when it was on sale right after the new DLC came out, and we played for 8 hours straight the first day. We were absolutely hooked
I’m glad you shared this game on your platform. This game was way too underrated in early access and I hope it begins getting the attention it deserves now that 1.0 dropped a little while ago
Sacrifice is insta god run. I go to the void fields, leave it at 8/9 cells and farm enemies until I spawn kill everything. That way the timer pauses and when you continue you're mega OP! Recycler makes it easy to control movespeed items.
I can't believe you picked up on this game, one of the underrated bangers of 2019... Andd my god that soundtrack, if you ever smoke a joint and you play the game, you will experience the best eargasm of your life.. Love you Chris Christodoulou
You cheated not only the game, but yourself. You didn't grow. You didn't improve. You took a shortcut and gained nothing. You experienced a hollow victory. Nothing was risked and nothing was rained. It's sad that you don't know the difference.
Actually usually play with command because so many items require the luck to get the ones that synergize with your build, so if you're unlucky you're just... A stronger character, not an actual build you developed and made. Also command let's you try out the fun ideas.

You got to unlock them first, and that comes hours after play.
Always loved ror1. I was skeptical about the move to 3d but they outdid themselves with the transition from ror1 to ror2. Great game
Honestly, sometimes playing RoR2 just makes me want to play RoR1 again. Although I like what they did with 2, 1 just seems so much easier to deal with in 2D. It's a lot easier to just dominate a run.
@@TwoTowersPro I tried to go back to 1 but there's such a clear technical difference I never went past the first stage
Yo I never expected a moisty on this one, but I'm glad its here, hopefully more people see this game cuz of it. Legit video game crack.
Probably the greatest sequel of an already amazing game transitioning from 2d to 3d
Video game crack is an understatement my time has literally been sucked into a void of Risk of Rain 2
Watching their journey makes me so proud :')
not to mention ror 1 has local coop !

Just get:
- Artifact of dissonance for the extra spicyness like magma worms or imps in stage 1;
- Artifact of evolution where mobs get stackable items every stage you go through;
- Artifact of honor so you can only face elite mobs;
- Artifact of spite so not only you have to dodge all the hectic attacks on screen, you also have to dodge the bombs they drop after you murder them;
- Artifact of vengeance so not only you have to deal with mobs and bosses, you now have to face a copy of yourself with more HP every 10 mins.

It's a shame they didn't give commando proper alternate abilities. His slide is a nice option, though.
Commando is my favorite 2nd to merc but i seriously do not like his original secondary ability haha
I hope this helped you people
Yeah let's just hope they add split screen because whenever my friends come round I always wanna play it w them but I cant
That's my only complaint about this game though. Aside from that I'd say it's an underrated masterpiece
I never really enjoyed the first game much, but when I started playing this I was straight up blown away. Sunk about 200 hours into this by now.
"Monsoon" is the hardest difficulty

At a certain point in the game it just turns into:
*I don't have to kill you, I have items that do that for me*
This is one of my favorites, and I’m so happy to see so many people playing now, it’s an amazing feeling
Well he mentioned Warframe, I guess that's as close to a moist meter we'll get out of him for it
Warframe got too repetitive imo, I have 300+ hrs on it. I usually try to get back into it but I just cant
I remember back when this was just a slightly janky 2D rougelike.
Its amazing to see what the team has done with the sequel.

Been playing Risk of Rain 2 for about a week and a half. It's definitely up there among my favorite games of all time.
From how you made it sound, you haven’t been able to figure out how to keep looping through stages instead of fighting the final boss (which is understandable it took the experienced community like an entire day to let everyone know how to do it).
But all you have to do is interact with the prongs on the stage 5 teleporter and it’ll put you through to stage 6, then 7 and so on.
good to know, I've just been getting the blue portal to skip it lol

I’ve been waiting so long for this video. RoR2 is an amazing game. Especially when you get into modding. For a game that’s barely even finished, the modding community is beyond fantastic.
Mods are fucking incredible, you can literally play as any enemy in the game and it would still work, items would work, equipment etc
Sadly I think Charlie is only going to play until he gets all of the characters and then never play again. He just doesn’t care much about cosmetics.
BrandonJustPlays Δ Possibly, but nonetheless worth sharing in case anyone wants an extra thing to go for while playing.
Sadly the captain alternate skin is not that good, but there is a mod that makes it far better
@@Total2Gamerz which mod?
He did a review, not a walkthrough. He doesn't have to touch on every tiny bit of detail, he only needed to explain a little about the game, why the gameplay was enjoyable to him and if he'd recommend it.
Also, you can unlock the Skins by either playing on Monsoon and Obliterating at A Moment Fractured after Stage 8 OR by defeating the final boss on Monsoon which is much quicker and easier than getting to Stage 8 on Monsoon due to scaling.
So weird i got this game when it came out and only started playing it again last night.

they do limit you though, quite heavily.
And dont even get me started about the last boss. 60+ min run just to get one shot.
@@chriscolbert2188 Oh yeah a boss that disables your one-shot protection with no warning... Yikes.
Please understand also that I almost only play on Moonsoon and I mostly play Huntress or Loader. I couldn't even kill the final boss on drizzle as Mercenary with a shaped glass (tbf the rest of the build wasn't that good)

@@JagEterCoola same problem, i consider myself pretty decent but mythrix has shit on me even on drizzle. idk why they thought his design was good....
