The $50 DDR SuperNOVA Machine Restoration

  • Here is a video of me fixing up a DDR SuperNOVA (American) cabinet I picked up for $50. I honestly meant for this to be quite a bit more in depth, but a lot of it really wasn't that interesting. It was all working... Just a ton of cleaning and replacing sensors.
    Basically in this video I will show you...
    -How to break apart the cabinet into moveable pieces
    -Cleaning the pads
    -Fixing some exposed wiring
    -LED modding the pads
    -A brief look at the control panel and what I did to it
    -The dead sensors in the cabinet and why they weren't working

    Awesome video boss. Just restored a PIU myself not too long ago. Wish I paid 50 bucks for it, but hey, I can not get mad at someone else's good fortune :D awesome find.

    This is sick! Also all the views and info on how everything is put together is very helpful to me, I'm designing my own Stepmania cab! It's going to be closer to a StepmaniaX cab though, with a flatscreen monitor in there and all. But I want a marquee with lights and such that don't come on the StepmaniaX cabs.

    Hey man! Hopefully you see this, but this is the guy from MN you met briefly in August when I visited to try out DDR A. I wanted to let you know to NOT use that 3M double sided foam tape that you mentioned at 55:00. I was using them for 1 year on my custom pad setup I showed you, and recently they actually deteriorated and fell apart. It flakes apart pretty badly and squishes flat. The stuff that doesn't have this problem is weatherstripping, which is what I used majority of my panel cushioning with. The foam tape I used was wrapped in aluminum tape and used as a "sensor" in the contact switch style pad since mine are reworked Redoctane/DDR Game pads like what you had in the past. Now I made them out of thin aluminum sheeting and it doesn't wear out! Plenty of new PFCs lately and even my first AA on Possession so I definitely stay away from the foam tape! Works for short periods of time. For how we play, they'll flake get destroyed really fast xD

    • @omg_kon
      @omg_kon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the tape may wear out differently on each setup. On mine everything has been working fine and we are coming up on a year since I bought the machine. I have used this tape in other pads and it lasted years without needing to be exchanged. In this particular case weatherstripping sounds too thick to use.
      Also whats up bro :P

      OMG KON!
      haha okay that's good. Just didn't want it to leave a lot of "snow flakes" in your pads like it did mine. I thought since your panels are roughly twice the thickness of my panels it may also make a difference in how much forces is applied to them. Lifes been alright! The new job is good haha hopefully I'll be able to get back and get my first MFC because lately I'm hitting the PFCs like mad on stuff 12 and below! Not bad for a custom built setup.

    Sorry for the long comment guys, but I think it’s worth sharing. I bought my cab fairly recently and realized I paid WAY too much. But due to 2020, I still feel lucky that I got the opportunity for someone to bring it to Canada (from California) almost for free. So if I look back, it’s actually pretty ok. It’s dirty AF in the pads. I started to remove ALL the screws for a deep clean, sandblasting and a brand new powder coat. It’s a JCab with a fully working 573. ❤️ i’m waiting for parts to refurbish it completely to its original state. (2nd to 7th mix) with new stickers, a modified Trinitron CRT and new plexiglas ⭐️ it’s a huge learning curve to go through but it’s gonna be awesome and worth it.
    The ONE thing i’m still scared to risk is to sand the metal pieces. They are so scratched but I don’t want to ruin them or have them unbalanced either.

      I'm curious what you consider paying way too much. The market has moved up on cabinets a lot over the last couple of years, but especially the last six months. A good working japanese cab now goes for 3.5k to 4.2k. An extreme cab sold on eBay for $4,550 last month and a SN cabinet sold at auction at Captains warehouse in LA for $3,200 last week, but that's not including a 15 percent buyers premium and 8 percent sales tax, so when you factor in shipping costs too that's easily over 4k.

    • @NiGHTSaturn
      @NiGHTSaturn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelsaffron364 Your comment is reassuring. Thank you. It’s mostly on the cosmetic and unclean side that I thought I paid too much for a while. I’m glad my cab will be worth the work.

      I restored an arcade pump it up machine and it make this one look like something clean enough one would eat off of. I had to vacuum the machine 3 times at three different stages and it still was never clean enough lol. Rusted completely from being around a shore arcade location. The vacuum was so clogged that I had to spend like 20 minutes really cleaning it out before it was able to finish the job. This guy did a great job, I would not mine a ddr if I come across one.

    hey, ive got a ddr extreme. it lacks memory card slots. it does have, in the settings, the memory enable/memory card check menu. even when, in the music selection screen, when you press right twice, the option to load from memory. i want to be able to save my data. how can i do this?
    am i shit out of luck because i dont have the right cabinet and/or software? i believe that its legit/not bootleg. if i have to rewire some things thats fine. but id really like to hook ip some memory cards. ive looked in many forums online but found nothing.
    any suggestions?

    • @omg_kon
      @omg_kon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are just missing slots. It's as simple as that. In Japan all cabinets had memory card slots when arcades upgraded to 2nd Mix Link Version and 3rd Mix. Your cab was imported before that so it has the option on the game but simply can not do anything until slots and the proper control panel are installed.

    • @jawbreaker707
      @jawbreaker707 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OMG KON! thanks bro. do you know of any message boards or website that has the information on how to go about (granted that i buy the front plate with the slots) wire the stuff together? as i said, and perhaps i simply didnt look hard or long enough, i cant find any data on the matter. everything comes up as playstation information or cabs that already came with it.
      thanks!

      Question about those L brackets, that trigger the sensors, are they supposed to be floppy?
