How to replace a T shovel handle

- Ever broken a shovel handle? Here is one way you can fix it up! We used dried wildwood ash to carve out a rustic handle, rivet it securely in place and plant a tree.
We have propagated various fruit and nut trees to sell this winter. We have searched far and wide to provide the very best cultivars for the homestead or front yard!

I always love watching your videos. I am disabled and sort of live vicariously though your actions.
Glad to see you show sharpening and oiling before using the tools.
Add some gypsum to that clay soil if you get a chance.,love your tireless work Mr. Chickadee
A TH-cam channel that always delivers. I always look forward to your videos!
As always, I congratulate you for your calm, professionalism and excellent work. Greetings from Rome, Italy.
I haven't made a T handle like that, but I've made a D handle by sawing, steaming and bending. That has been on my videos to make list for a long time. There is also the old style of carved D handle that has to start with a wide piece of wood.
D is probably bit more comfortable to use, but way more involved to make, and I needed to get to planting! lol If I made a D I would use the steam bending method, the single piece seems a bit wasteful and weaker.
Two new videos within a week? Awesome.
Дренажная лопата. Самый лучший инструмент для посадки кустов и деревьев. Долго к такой присматривался. Купил прошлой осенью и не пожалел!
Видео ремонта просто замечательное!
Good to have you back miss these. amazing job as always keepup the good work .
👍😀
An excellent example of “show don’t tell“
Definitely makes me want to sharpen my drawknife! Nice work, as ever! 😎✌️
Excellent quality, I really love the quietness of your videos.
What is the reason for planting the tree so deep? I thought they like about level with the original grade? Thank you, Jim
That's some tough dirt. Glad you made the shovel sharp, or I THINK you did!
ROCKS
Ahhh... a delightful video as always. Just the way my Grandad taught me to work. Slow and steady and not a power tool in sight. Sometimes the world moves too fast for us to stop and take a moment to savour the skills of yester year. Many thanks 😃😃
I always learn something valuable with your videos
my d handle broke and i was debating how to fix…after watching this I’m going to use this method! thanks!
Just a work of art.
This too is my form of meditation in my shed.
I have my grand father’s fork to re-hang this coming winter. Can’t wait the light the Woodstove in there and get into it
Nice shovel! That soil sounded very difficult to penetrate!
I like the fact you kept it wild and simple. Very nice, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
👍👌👏 Very well done again and as always (video and work). I simply love your great and silent video and miss new ones. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and especially health to all involved life forms (humans and plants).
thank you!
Dear @@MrChickadee
You're welcome, it's my pleasure.
Thanks for replying. I totally appreciate it very much.
Sincerely yours.
Great video, brother. Semper Fi.
Hope to see some new videos soon
Great job on that handle! Should last a long time!!
Good as new, if not even better! A fine job my friend. 👍
Great to see you again. Nice handle and t-handle.
Really beautiful work, dude! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Went out to Century Farm Orchards near Reidsville, NC last weekend to get a couple old timey apple trees. They specialize in old varieties of apples from across the South. It was an experience.
that sound when you rub the shovel with the towel 🥰
You work with the patience and determination of a monk. Truly enjoy your videos. Much to be learned about your crafts as well as the value of discipline, determination, commitment, and the zen and enjoyment of what you choose to work on. Interesting relationship with time. Also, those are the coolest trousers. Where can I get some.
Pure ASMR at its best, thank you for sharing it with us 🙂
It’s certainly very interesting to see what the automated subtitles make of the workshop noises.
Good for another hundred years 💪
Great job on the handle! You do beautiful work and the videos are so relaxing. Just one thought. I'm not a professional landscaper, but I have planted many bushes and small trees over the years. It looked like you may have dug the hole to deep. My understanding is you don't want to bury the trunk in the dirt, but get it just above the ground level otherwise it can effect the growth and eventually the lifespan of the plant. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the comment. I learned to bury the graft from Englands Nursery, and who have planted their 30+ acre orchards of fruit and nut trees this way for over 30 years now with great success. Its also worked well for us over the past 10 years.
Wow! That's very interesting. Thank you for sharing that. I guess I'll have to look into that a little more. Keep up the good work.@@MrChickadee
Tomato's also like this method of planting
Thanks, a great video as always, and such a pleasant change from most offerings available !
Great idea to match the bend required to retain as much long grain as possible !
GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN MR CHICKADEE. SECOND
Very nice finish on that join, but not surprised by your attention to detail.
Thank you! Cheers!
Always a treat.
Great job Josh, you take great pride in your work on every job you do and bring back broken tools to life for another century. Stay safe and thanks for all you share with us. Fred.
Good seeing you again! Please post more!❤
Alot of looking and walking to find shapes needed to fix restore be blessed thanks🎉🎉❤❤
I'm happy, to see you again.
So glad to have another video from you. Thanks for all y’all do!
Great video, you should do a tool and farm tools video on the ones you have I love seeing the old tools and I use them almost every day myself keep up the great work
A pleasure watching sir, thank you
Happy belated birthday, Marine!
Nice to see you back.
WOW!!! Mr. Chickadee, those suss......penders- shoot the whole outfit are outta this world😮😊😂
I think Roy Underhill of the Wood Wrights Shop would be proud.
Ah super good video i need to replace mine!
Nice work on the spade. Tree planted too deep though: root collar needs to be at ground level.
I bury all grafts, it has worked very well for me in all my orchards.
Thank you
"this man is outstanding in his field and digging it"
Love your videos and for keeping these traditions alive. What is the best method for wood interior walls/insulation/siding? All from outside or two layers?
skvělá práce,ten stromek jste zasadil příliš hluboko místo srůstu podnože by mělo bít nad zemí asi palec
Wow. Beautiful work as always.
Hope you are well Mr. Chickadee :)
Love your work. A true craftsman!!
Lovely
The title of this video massively undersells its content. How about pop 'handmade' in the title, at least? Love your videos. Thanks, Mandy.
Awesome!!
AMAZING WHA YOU HAVE ACOMLICESD KEEP GOING. CHEERS .
Hey Mr C. Love your work 👍
Super 👍
The tree looked like it was planted quite deep?
Good to see a new video, keep it up if you can!
Like this grafted apple tree I bury all grafts below grade. Have done so one hundreds of trees over the past 8 years, always works great to reduce root suckering and aid severe freeze damage.
I guess it doesn’t matter as much for the high canopy rootstocks, but when buried this deep, weak rootstocks lose their dwarving potential. Great video as always!
Always great videos.
Sharpening tooks before use is time well spent! Im surprised you didnt hone the shovel edge to shaving sharp tho hahaha
step 1: already have the perfect shaped bit of wood haha. came together really nicely
I have been considering cutting off the handle of a "spade" shovel I have......it never gets used, mainly because it is built for someone MUCH shorter than I. At 6'3" tall, I HATE having to bend over to use the spade.....so it just sits in the shed.
Wish good trees for that kind of thing grew where I live, but alas…
Thanks for sharing. Looks like a fun project. Don’t large tools prefer dense carved trunk wood? Why not preserve the original handle. Let us know how it holds up. Cheers!
It was rotted and loose
Anyone else thinks he looks abit like Bill Hader? 😮
What did you use to make the rivet? Thx.
Cool
I was wondering if you were gonna wedge the T handle. I've seen a lot of commercial shoves with just a brad shot haphazardly through. As if that's gonna take the abuse. :))
Good work! Also, much better than the Y handle, i've never liked those and they can really wear your fingers out if you dig for a while. They never seem to manage to be the right size. Either too wide and thus the handle breaks, or too narrow.
😊I enjoy your videos very muchs and learn many skills. But sometimes i dont understand why your do som things. Maybue yuo could explaine. Thank you very much. Sorry butt the spelling 😊
👍👍
Do you think you'd ever build a shave horse? Or does your bench have all that covered? It's just such a comfortable way to do that kind of work and maybe that's the genesis of the shave horse, old guys like me wanting to work on stuff longer but not standing up.
Maybe someday but will need to make one with a recline and back support, sitting straight without support kills my lower back.
@@MrChickadeeGot cha. I'm imagining a back that slides forward and back but binds up and holds when you put weight against it. So you can get it in just the right position.
Ever thought about building a shave horse?....just out of curiosity.
I have years ago, I prefer standing at the vise
de dee dee...
Thank you.
hi chickadee can you make vidfeo on making that wooden spokeshave.
A bit too far for me to buy anything (The other side of the atlantic) but that is beautiful piece of work regards the spade.
top
Awesome job as always sir. Love the video. Have a quick question. Where did you get them pants? Im looking for a style like that.
historical emporium sells them
@@MrChickadeethank you sir.
Nice..
Dude haven't seen you in a while don't be a stranger or strange😂
More videos soo, Mr Chickadee?
I hope Mr. Chickadee is ok? Haven't seen his new video for months...
filming now sorry for the wait
этот человек выживет,когда электричество закончится😂
Hi Josh,
Any reason you didn’t reuse the old handle? I haven’t built a shave horse yet because there’s not much space in my shop and my wife won’t let me put it in the living room. How about you?
Cheers,
Keith
it was pretty rotted and loose.
I prefer standing at the vise over sitting.
I think it is wrong to bury grafting under the soil. Correct me if I'm wrong...
can you do avideo on wood movment
Hey Mr. Chickadee, how do you know when a shovel, say, is worth saving and not just made from cheap steel?
Ive never found a shovel not worth saving
You've got pretty heavy clay soil. Do you ever have to amend it when you drop a sapling in? Or does the root ball take care of that? I'm also thinking about drainage.
Yeah its horrible like clay with gravel added...I bury in native soil then add compost and mulch on top. Works pretty good.
Is the tree planted too deep? Will the root flare be above soil line?
Like this grafted apple tree I bury all grafts below grade. Have done so one hundreds of trees over the past 8 years, always works great to reduce root suckering and aid severe freeze damage.
Nice job. Terrible looking soil.
To short, and no enough. Content !
Do you have a shaving horse?
What kind of tree?
4rd?
I'm kidding 😂😂
