  • This video shows the making of a wildwood broom out of broomcorn straw. It is tied in with waxed twine and a decorative weave is added using hickory bark strips.

It's very impressive to see the amount of work required to produce an item we take so much for granted today. I love watching the handicraft you put into these.
The only disadvantage to watching the videos this early after they're released is that the really informative captions aren't up yet!

Cool! In Laramie, Wyoming, you'll find the well-preserved Wyoming Territorial Prison, which includes a broom factory, where the prisoners were employed making brooms. All the old equipment is still in place, but I never saw a demonstration of how it works. Thanks for a great, informative video, Mr. Chickadee!

You have the knowledge of a much older person. I'm an old man and I remember watching my grandfather make things like this that we take for granted since we can just pop over to the store and buy them. Thank you!!!!!

Mr. Chickadee, as always, did a great job in producing a useful and decorative item.
I don't make brooms, but I do cut thousands, (yes, you read that correctly) of broomsticks on my 80-acre forested property.
I bundle them by (at least) a ten-count of 6' hardwood sticks and when I have 200+ bundles, (2000+ sticks) I load them up and deliver them, (usually twice a year, Fall and late Winter) to the "Broom Man" in Eugene, OR.
I'm one of two suppliers and he sells/ships completed brooms all over the world; so, if you happen to have a hand-made broom from Broom Magic of Eugene, chances are it's from my property in the Willamette Valley.
    Cheers.

great videography of a beautiful craft, sir.

was there any specific knot to keep the individual bundles tight? i could imagine making little sliding bowlines with a clove to hold it would be nice to really cinch down.
oh the irony of using a loose broom and end up sweeping more fallen bristles than dirt.

As for me, I think I would have a lot of kindling for the stove and would give up and sweep the floor with a store bought one so I could at least walk around in the place. Dropping my toast would definitely be a no-no. And even the cats wouldn't come visiting through all the mess. Of course that presumes that I could find out how brooms are actually made these days. I paid a healthy $30 for my large straw broom. Now I know it was a bargain. Your ability to find these old skills and learn how to make the new whatever it is is amazing. You continue to find, revive old skill sets that are usable as well as admirable and master them supremely, and that astounds me. Thank you sir.

You can still buy a quality corn broom but most people want the dollar store price so they won’t buy a good broom. My corn broom is over 30 years old and may be a little worn down but still works great.

Josh, there are no captions, so I would like to ask clarifying questions (I've been drying my broom material all year). 1) What was the knot you started off called? 2) What was the knot you ended the wrapping with called? 3) Do they ever slip/ need to be retied? 4) Why wrap the broomcorn "upside down" to then fold over and make part of the rest of the normally wrapped grass? 5) What kind of knot did you tie in the end with the loop through, and pulled tight? 6) What resources did you use to learn how to tie the broom? Many thanks. LG
