    Ever wanted to create pictures in your knitting? Intarsia is the fab colorwork technique that empowers you to make marvellous shapes and images in your knitwear! Think jazzy jumpers, snazzy socks, dazzling decor - not to mention epic Christmas sweaters!
    In this tutorial, Merion will show you the basic steps.
    Link to our guide & FREE Paintbox Reindeer Jumper featured on the video:
    www.lovecrafts.com/p/intercha...
    Materials:
    Knitting needles
    Ball of yarn - your working yarn
    1 x bobbin of grey
    1 x bobbin of pink
    Darning needle
    This tutorial uses Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran x 2 shades: www.lovecrafts.com/en-au/p/de...
    Steps:
    00:00 Intro
    02:26 Start by knitting a couple of rows in a standard stocking stitch.
    Knit up to where your colour block begins.
    03:00 When it’s time for your first colour change, take your bobbin with your new colour (which is pink in the video) and make a simple loop. Knit into the next stitch and then use your new colour to pull through. Make sure your colour change yarn is always sitting underneath your working yarn, as this will trap the yarn and avoid holes.
    03:32 Knit with new colour for desired length.
    03:43 When you’re ready to change back to your original colour, take your bobbin which is the same colour as the working yarn you began with, make a simple loop and knit.
    04:35 Knit to the end of the row and turn the work.
    05:30 Purl the next row. Purl back to the point where you change colour.
    05:50 Using the pink attached to the bobbin, purl the length of your colour block.
    06:58 Colour change and purl to the end.
    Once you’ve reached the end of your row, carefully turn your work around.
    Continue on next rows to complete your swatch.
    08:39 Sew in the ends.
    Top Tips
    1:54 You can make your own bobbins by winding yarn around pieces of paper.
    7:00 When you change colour, loop the new shade of yarn behind the previous yarn as you knit, capturing and securing the yarn you are leaving behind. This is a great way to avoid holes in your work.
    7:20 When you’re working with multiple bobbins it’s so easy to get in a tangle. To avoid knots, take time to straighten out strands as you go! (You’ll thank us later!)
    9:10 If you find some pesky holes in your design when you’ve finished knitting, no troubles! Simply close any gaps as you sew in the ends.

    If the contrasting color on the Purl side (for instance the pink in the video) is picked up several stitches out to the side from the last pink (knitted) row, that seems to create a float. Is there any way to correct that? If not, should the float be limited to 5 or less stitches?

    You are such a wonderful teacher! So is it only when you do pictures in knitting that you put your yarn onto bobbins and when you do patterns in different colours you stand the yarn at the back keeping it on the balls?

    • @lovecraftscom
      @lovecraftscom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Fran, you can do either - bobbins are good when you only have little areas of colour, so that you don't have big balls of yarn to move around, but if you're working larger areas of colour, balls are fine. I'm so glad you found it useful! Sometimes these techniques look so much harder than they are - and actually if you just take your time it's really straightforward!!! Happy knitting and thank you so much for adding a comment to tell me!! xxx Merion xx

We have just knitted it as a patch to show you - but when you look at a pattern that has a motif in it, you will see that there is a chart to follow as part of the pattern. Hi Alexis - if you have just one stitch and it's near another bobbin of the same colour, you can use that. If it is just one stitch on its own somewhere, just snip off a length of the right colour and use that, and weave the ends in either side, no need for a complete bobbin. Hope that helps! Kindest, Merion x

    Question: if you are doing a large sweater and using multiple balls of yarn- can you use the individual balls rather than a bobbin?

    • @lovecraftscom
      @lovecraftscom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alex, oh absolutely yes. The only thing to watch, is the same whether you use bobbins or balls, just keep an eye on them tangling up! Good luck! Love from Merion and the LoveCrafts team xx

    Do it work with ribbing stitches

    Is it important that I use purl stitch for intarsia? Or can I use a different stitch?

    • @lovecraftscom
      @lovecraftscom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gabriela, well, you most often work intarsia in stocking stitch (stockinette) and so it does involve some purling. But - there's no law that says you can't work it all in garter (knit) stitch - it will just be bumpier with less defined edges!

    can you apply this to knitting on the round or are all my creative ideas doomed to fail?

    • @lovecraftscom
      @lovecraftscom  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is a little tricky to knit Intarsia in the round as you won't be turning your work, so the yarn ends of the different colours might be in the wrong position meaning that you might need to make lots of cuts etc. There are ways to knit Intarsia in the round which we don't have any tutorials for I am afraid, but please reach out to our team via our Helpcentre on our website, if you need any help. ❤️🥰

    I am knitting my first ever summer top and it has a picture with 9 colors included in the front but I am on row 92 and the picture is clumped together!! I didn’t think I was pulling and my tension is tight!! 😭😖😭😖. Do I need to grog it all!!!!???? The picture is a comic book character ... I made the chart but tension in picture is tight 😢

    • @lovecraftscom
      @lovecraftscom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kati, hmm that is one of the tricky part of intarsia - tension! You might find that when you have finished you can block it to stretch it out - that definitely does help to open up the image. Let us know how you get on! Kindest, merion xx

    Lovely lady who is really clear but some feedback. In future please use colours that are vastly different. These are too similar and on my screen it isn’t easy to see which colour is which and that’s important when you are looking at how to twist the yarns to avoid holes.
