This is probably the saddest song I've ever heard. It makes me think back to when my dad died. Every time I hear it I get quite teary-eyed...including this time.
Would it blow your minds to know the song was a make-up song for the brothers' reconciliation after an 18-month break-up? Robin left the group in 1969 to go solo. They all three later said it was a result of immaturity, youthful egos, and first fame. Maurice and Barry worked as a duo after trying their sister Lesley as a replacement for Robin (lasted one concert-- Lesley realized she wasn't cut out for the music life and returned to life with hubby in Australia) The brothers missed one another acutely during the estrangement. Lonely Days was about missing their working together. All three had wives. "Where would I be without my woman" might be interpreted as "If I didn't have my woman, where would I be!? I miss my brothers!!"
Barry said Lonely Days was about the split with his brothers and how they missed each other during that lonely time. Great song! I believe I heard their wives always went on tour with them.
It's been said that Lonely Days is about the brothers' relationship and how they missed each other when they were apart. You can substitute the word "brother" for "woman" and totally get that vibe. They wrote Lonely Days and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart the same afternoon in their first writing session after getting back together. This was their finale at concerts until "You Should be Dancing" became the showstopper. When they did it live in concert in the 70's they really get into it!
After being broken up for almost 2 years, Barry said Robin showed up at his door and he invited him in the help him with a song he was working on. It was HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART. They then called Mo to meet them at the studio, where they recorded it, and also wrote and recorded LONELY DAYS. If you watch the official video for Lonely Days, they film at their personal homes and in personal autos, Barry taking Barnaby for a walk, apart at the beginning, but together at the end. They had missed each other. How can you mend a broken heart? Get back together with your brothers and make music!! So glad they did. Please put LONELY VIOLIN on your list for reactions.
Typical Bee Gees song? Keep listening and you'll discover there is no typical song when it comes to them, other than their harmonies , great lyrics, etc. They could do and did many different styles. That's another thing that makes them so fantastic
The genesis for this song and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" was about their time apart and missing each other. However, they wrote subtly, so that their audience could incorporate their own interpretation of the meaning. I like the contrast in sounds, beat, and texture between the verses and the chorus. They wrote "Man For All Seasons" at about the same time. This is another one where they used both Barry and Robin's voices in magnificent contrast, and the harmony by all is unmatched.
What's always been great about the Bee Gees is that they would consistently push the creative envelope and go for something different in every one of their songs. It's great to see you react to their song catalog and discover why they were so successful. Whether it be singing or songwriting, musically, they could do it all.
Mo has always been my favorite! He taught himself guitar, bass guitar, piano, organ, and then after electronic keyboards showed up he started working with them. He also plays drums and I have heard that he can play flute as well. AND he has a wonderful voice!
They very well couldn't sing 'brothers'.....so they sang woman....there's a music video to this track available on TH-cam....watch it and you'll see what I mean.......love you'll reactions.....thanks so much for doing them.......lovely also to see the close bond between you both......
They were so young here, when miming was the done thing on TV shows. You can always tell when there is no orchestra on stage, there is echo and then they fade out at the end.. But this song is stunning....
Simply an amazing piece of work! Hauntingly beautiful with a powerful ending. In late 1970, just as I was getting into Top 40 radio, this came out of the radio speaker and I was hooked. Lonely Days was one of ten or so meaningful songs that stir up memories today...of what it was like to listen to REAL music. I never get tired of hearing this. Absolutely love your facial expressions! I remember the thrill of hearing this for the first time.
LONELY DAYS incorporated the innovative structure and knack for changing tempos exemplified by the second side of The Beatles' Abbey Road album, released the previous year and a clear influence on this single. "Lonely Days" shifts back and forth between a piano-and-strings-dominated verse reminiscent of "You Never Give Me Your Money" and "Golden Slumbers," and an up-tempo stomping chorus that echoes "Carry That Weight"; perhaps as an acknowledgment of the debt, as the record approaches its fade-out, Barry's voice is filtered to sound like John Lennon's. Amazingly LONELY DAYS was written in a mere 10 minutes. To exemplify the strong influence, a previous BEE GEE'S manager heard the song in a restaurant and said it was one of his favorite BEATLES songs!
This was written when the three brothers got back together after they had broken up. They also wrote How Do You Mend a Broken Heart the same day in their first writing session together after the separation.
Lots of memories of hearing The Bee Gees on the radio and stereo back in the 1970s. A good friend of mine in high school, Susan, taught a dance class circa 1977-1978, and used Bee Gee music a lot in her class.
This song was actually written just after How can you mend a broken heart. They just didn't put it out right away. And yes, they were all married in 1970. Barry and his current wife Linda have been married over 50 years, not many in the music world can boast that. Barry took Linda and his kids on tour with him. Mo often took his family with him.
I think Barry was stoned out of his mind in this clip, LOL. Look at his eyes and how he's swaying on his feet. This was one of the first songs after their break-up, the time when all brothers were involved with their own vice (pills, pot, alcohol).
Another excellent reaction... Would love to see your reaction to Bee Gees Sweets For My Sweet (1963) and their first big hit New York Mining Disaster 1941 (1967).
As much as you two LOVE the Bee Gees, please react to their baby bro Andy🎼! I KNOW you'll both LOVE him just as much🥰....& maybe start with I Just Wanna be Your Everything👍!!
A very nice reaction to another excellent song. I'm still looking forward to more BeeGees, along with EW&F. Maybe some others, like Steely Dan. Keep churning them out for consumption ladies. ❤️
That's what happens from the influence of The Beatles. It influenced bands all across the globe and you could hear it in most bands music that year or the next couple years.
When this came out a lot of people thought it was a BEATLES song and if you think about it , it does sound like something Paul and John could have written and sung but it definitely is the BEE GEES through and though . Thanks for going back down the path to my youth these songs bring back such fond memories , the 60s and 70s were filled with so much musical and fashion genres . The bands and singers mostly were working class people who worked all week and performed Friday Saturday and Sunday nights until they had a hit and made the big time unfortunately they weren't all as successful as the BEATLES , THE STONES or the BEE GEES but it was an amazing time to be a teenager growing up with such talented artists . I've mentioned it before but please react to their younger brother ANDY GIBB and check out their song IMORTALITY written for Celine Dion and performed with her. You will be amazed .
Sounding different is their trademark! Even on most of their albums, you'll find it that way. For excample on 'Horizontal' (1968). There you can find a song called 'Really And Sincerely' and another track, called 'The Earnest Of Being George'. It's a difference like between day and night.
I LISTEN TO THE BEE GEE'S SO MUCH AND JUST NO WORDS TO SAY HOW AMAZING THEY ARE. BUT HEY THEY DO HAVE 2 OTHERE SONGS THAT ARE AWESOME WEDDING DAY& THE SONG CALLED ONE THEM 2 SONGS ARE AMAZING
My band covered this back in the 90s although we rocked it up a little bit similarly to how Van Halen rocked up Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman". We substituted the hand claps for floor tom and ride tom, used a little distortion on the guitars, etc. (we didn't have a keyboard). I've always loved this song.
You never knew which instrument Maurice Gibb was going to play next. The piano makes this one. Sometimes he played guitar, sometimes bass, sometimes various keyboards. He only sang lead on a few songs. Usually it was Barry or Robin. There's a lot of great stuff from the time frame you were listening to. Holiday and Massachusetts were a couple I liked.
I love how they sound so different over the decades. Please add “Irresistible Force” from 1997 Still Waters album to your to-do list. It’s lesser known but one of my favorites!
Hi LADIES You SHOULD REACT to the Live Video of the BEE GEEs SONG CALLED STAYING ALIVE WHERE BARRY Gibb sings in A high FALSETTO VOICE AND You Will LOVE it
Please listen to Brooks and Dunn's song and watch the great fitting video with it. It's called, "Believe". It's a POWERFUL song with a message and a TRUE story for the lead singer. Love your reviews! George
Great reaction as usual ladies, speaking of wraspy voices from the Brothers Gibb will you look up "Israel" which has no official video but from what I have seen on TH-cam just images, and " every second, every minute" both sung by Barry lead vocals 😀
This song gives me a Beatles vibe. It could easily be sung by the Beatles in my opinion. Even the trademark harmonies are more Beatle-like than the tradiional Bee Gees harmonies. Does anyone else hear the similarity or is it just me ?
I know you're a big Eric Burdon and the Animals fan I'm watching Ed Sullivan right now a show that was running 1966 and Eric Burdon and the Animals are on this show singing the song Don't Bring Me Down I looked it up on TH-cam and it's on TH-cam so this is the youngest version of Eric Burdon I've ever seen to date and I mean he's pretty dog gone young in this video so you might be interested in that it's the only reason I'm writing this little message here I know you like Eric Burdon in his music and that song Don't Bring Me Down as excellent It's one I hadn't heard before and now that I've heard it it's one of my favorites.
Great reactions from both of you!! I am recommending HIGHLY "Love So Right and Reaching Out." These are two of the most beautiful and passionate songs from the brothers. The harmonies of all three and Barry and Robin's falsettos are the best of the best. Enclosed is the link of Love So Right, rarely sung live in front of an audience. th-cam.com/video/cQTHNvbD2Sk/w-d-xo.html
My background has provided me with a decent grasp on popular music. But this song really threw me off. When it was released, I was around 11 yrs old, and for the next 30 yrs or so, I would've sworn on a stack of Bibles that this was a Beatles record. The whole thing just sounds like something the Beatles would create. But additionally, Barry's solo near the end sounds SO MUCH like John Lennon to me. I discovered my error about 20 yrs ago when I watched a documentary about the Bee Gees. I was incredulous! Like, I was yelling at the TV, "No Way!" LOL! Does anyone else think this song is Beatles-esque?
This is probably the saddest song I've ever heard. It makes me think back to when my dad died. Every time I hear it I get quite teary-eyed...including this time.
My favorite song by the Bee Gees, I remember when it first was released, I played it over and over...
No Matter What,The Bee Gees Are The Greatest
To my ears this is the song I most think sounds like the Beatles!
I would say this is their most "Beatle-esque" song
First time I heard this on the radio I said, "Cool! A new Beatles song!"
They could sing the phone book and make it sound so good!!!😊😊😊❤❤❤
Would it blow your minds to know the song was a make-up song for the brothers' reconciliation after an 18-month break-up? Robin left the group in 1969 to go solo. They all three later said it was a result of immaturity, youthful egos, and first fame.

All three had wives. "Where would I be without my woman" might be interpreted as "If I didn't have my woman, where would I be!? I miss my brothers!!"
Look at those young sharp looking fellows, they have no Idea they're just about ready to take over the world.😁
They worked hard for their success!
Surprise, surprise. LOL. They never cease to amaze you.
I LOVE this song!!
They were constantly changing their sound. Very creative.
Their families went with them when they toured. The guys said the girls loved to shop in other countries.
Barry said Lonely Days was about the split with his brothers and how they missed each other during that lonely time. Great song! I believe I heard their wives always went on tour with them.

Yes, I'm thinking of the 1976 LA concert. I still listen all the time to "Here At Last Live."
@@janicetrimmell6897 - Q here. They really rocked it and picked up the tempo live,
One of the 2 songs (How Can You Mend A Broken Heart being the other) they wrote in one day, after their 15 month split.
Nice 🙂
These are the kinds of harmonies that can only be achieved by siblings who have been singing together for as long as they could say words.
Barry always travelled with his wife, and family. He didn’t want to miss them.
Typical Bee Gees song? Keep listening and you'll discover there is no typical song when it comes to them, other than their harmonies , great lyrics, etc. They could do and did many different styles. That's another thing that makes them so fantastic
Love this Bee Gees song and my favorite part is when Barry comes out with that raspy/passionate voice toward the end.
Love this song, and love Barry’s raspy voice. Sexy. 💗This was written the year I was born. It’s my song. 😉
How Can You Mend A Broken Heart…also stunning.
You two are so beautiful, this Bee-Gees song is so great, check out "Holiday" by them, that is also a great song.

I liked this era of their music, before they became disco. Great selection. One of their very best.
Love so Right next please ladies - it will not disappoint!

One of the best things to come from the UK is the Bee Gees
LONELY DAYS incorporated the innovative structure and knack for changing tempos exemplified by the second side of The Beatles' Abbey Road album, released the previous year and a clear influence on this single. And shades of Because
Yay, another Bee Gee's tune. I'm still waiting for you to react to Massachusetts. Thank you for another great reaction.
Don't you just love them?! We do too!!!
This was written when the three brothers got back together after they had broken up. They also wrote How Do You Mend a Broken Heart the same day in their first writing session together after the separation.
60's music ❤️
Lots of memories of hearing The Bee Gees on the radio and stereo back in the 1970s. A good friend of mine in high school, Susan, taught a dance class circa 1977-1978, and used Bee Gee music a lot in her class.

I had a hard time appreciating disco, but I love their early songs.
Que maravilhoso clássico dos Bee Gees! Que harmonia nas vozes, amoooooooooo!!!!💪❤❤❤❤👋👋👋👋🇧🇷
I think Barry was stoned out of his mind in this clip, LOL. Look at his eyes and how he's swaying on his feet. This was one of the first songs after their break-up, the time when all brothers were involved with their own vice (pills, pot, alcohol).
This song had a Beatles flavor to me.
Play Holiday..my fav early Bee Gees song..
So much contrast in one song. Besides being great musically, they are amazing songwriters.
Another excellent reaction...
Would love to see your reaction to Bee Gees Sweets For My Sweet (1963) and their first big hit New York Mining Disaster 1941 (1967).
The latter one 2nd fav song of the early Bee Gees!
As much as you two LOVE the Bee Gees, please react to their baby bro Andy🎼! I KNOW you'll both LOVE him just as much🥰....& maybe start with I Just Wanna be Your Everything👍!!

From the Bee Gees album titled, 2 Years On , 1970
This is 1970,the year Barry married Linda,and they’ve been together,ever since.💕
This is my favorite Bee Gees. I had their poster from this on my wall as a teenager, in all my angst!
Sounding different is their trademark! Even on most of their albums, you'll find it that way. For excample on 'Horizontal' (1968). There you can find a song called 'Really And Sincerely' and another track, called 'The Earnest Of Being George'. It's a difference like between day and night.

Please react to their song Spirits(Having Flown)from 1979.😊
Ladies, listen to other versions later on like on their 1989 live tour and the One Night Only in 1997. You will really feel it!!
My band covered this back in the 90s although we rocked it up a little bit similarly to how Van Halen rocked up Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman". I saw them live.
I'm a big fan you guys are amazing
Loved it from the first time I heard it. Liked your surprised expressions
I've just gotta get a message to you..
That would be epic!

Barry has almost a John Lennnon vocal quality on the end of this song. Definitely influenced by the Beatles.
Actually this was also about them…was written right after, how can you mend a broken heart. They use horns and violins a lot.
Yummy
During this song, it is possible to mistake the group for the Beatles.
Keeps repeating same lyrics over and over ..this is least of their songs that I liked
