In my first year of teaching i was in a small town and I went to the doctor. I was physically fit. He took my blood pressure and he straight away went, “ Let me guess. You’re a teacher?”

So true, y’all! My doc wanted me to leave teaching for years. I had a mental breakdown at work and couldn’t return without a signed doctor note. He refused and I don’t blame him. Even though it was a huge financial hit and took a while to recover, five years out of teaching I am so happy and I have my doctor to thank for that.

The thing about a former student making after 3 months at Amazon was real.
I've seen a couple instances where teachers are working 2nd jobs in restaurants with former students being their supervisor. That is some serious humility that should not be required.

In 1999, after my classroom was torched by arsonists, destroying 20 year’s worth of books and resources, I was allocated a day a week for about 4-6 weeks for reorganising, ordering, etc.for my class & another which was partially affected.
The next term I found I couldn’t cope with full time teaching, so asked for a further 9 days out of class - meaning a day a week for the rest of that term. I was told I had to be first assessed by a psychiatrist.
He said I was “mildly depressed”. You THINK?! My assessment? Majorly pissed off!
19 years later I had cancer and my return to school - after successful surgery & not needing chemo - was hampered by my principal, who didn’t give me the correct information or organise the paperwork on time.
I retired at the end of that year & my farewell? A gift left in my tray in the staff room.

But it's worth being aware that it's a lifestyle you're committing to, not a tidy 9 to 5 that you leave behind at the office at the end of the day.

Yes, if you have a strong and secure personality. If you are easily pushed around and insecure about the wisdom of your decisions, it may not be the profession for you. I've been teaching for for 20 odd years and love it. I enjoy every day. I share a room with a teacher who is stressed out of her mind daily and is often angry. We teach the same profile of high school student and have the same admin influences on us. I think a great deal of it is just personality.
