Such a hauntingly dark, sorrowful yet hopeful song. Pretty much describes the kind of film Disney was going for. They just don't make 'em like this anymore...

True. But this version doesn't seem to have many lyrics. I was listening for the part where it said, 'I'm lost at sea without a friend....this journey will it ever end,'...I looked at other versions but can't find the version where it had those lyrics.

It is one of my favourite Disney songs ever produced. It is so sad and just the sound of it alone is very 70s, which I love. Even the first few seconds sounds like it could come from the 1976 movie Carrie, it was that dark. Such a wonderful piece of music for anyone who is reaching out for help and struggling in life.

I don't care who you are or what you think but from 1:36 to 2:10 has such good harmonies it makes a person cry. especially how it goes from a major chord to a minor chord. As everyone else has stated, this song and the movie itself is very underrated

I'm glad someone else took note of that section----I agree it's the most stirring part. It's the buildup to the climactic "storm", but the rising tension is even better than the "release", I think.
I'm trying to become a little more musically literate, so I wanted to ask ---- you say during that section it switches from a major to minor chord. Is the precise moment that happens at 1:54? It's a noticeable mood shift, and it doubles down at 2:00 to 2:02, which is actually my favorite part of the whole piece, quick as it is.

That minor fall is punctuated by a little French horn solo that gives you the chillbumps. Disney used to have a knack for giving iconic songs to singers like Shelby Flint and Julie Andrews. Shelby had a couple of Top100 songs in the early 60's, but to me this was by far the prettiest song she ever sang! It makes you wonder why she didn't do more.

It's ironic how despite the death of Walt Disney, the studio managed to put out some of the best movies during this period of time. The Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood, The Great Mouse Detective, and this movie are some of the best pre-Disney Renaissance movies imo. The Bronze Age in general was very underrated and underappreciated, and in a lot of way, I think is actually better than both the Golden and Silver Ages combined.

This song brings tears to my eyes. I’ve always felt like this movie is just so much darker than other Disney movies. there’s something about the dark, gritty art style and it’s mostly black and green, swampy, almost toxic setting that has always hit me different. This song encapsulates it all, it’s like no other. It perfectly describes the movie, not only in its story but its whole feel, haunting and sorrowful, hopelessly hopeful, if you will. I just watched this movie for the first time in probably 15 years (the last time I watched it, it was on VHS) and the scene where Medusa told Penny that she would never be adopted made me genuinely cry. It really reminded me how surreal the movie truly is, in a different light now that I’m older.

This movie came out shortly after my father had died. I was 10 years old. I was in so much pain from losing him. I felt so lost and confused, just devastated and bewildered that I would never again see my father. Never be able to consult with him as I was growing into a man. Never learn anything else from him, like how to tie a tie, or how to shave, or how to deal with various situations in life that I would face as I grew older. Even though I had my little sister and my mom, I still felt completely alone, adrift in a sea of pain and suffering, not knowing where I might end up or what the future held. Every day I wondered, "who will rescue me? Who will take me away from all this pain and anguish? I'm just a little kid, I'm not equipped to deal with this! I need my Daddy! Why was he taken from me? Please.....please.... somebody help me." So I really connected with these lyrics. I still do from time to time, especially when I'm depressed. Who hasn't felt lost at sea, without a friend, wondering when the journey of suffering would ever end?

My favorite Disney animated film of the 70's. It has heart and poignancy, and not too much evil, or comic relief. I watched it again recently and had a great time. Can't imagine it without Geraldine Page, Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor; all delightful. There are some wonderful little sequences to enjoy, like when Madam Medusa is removing her makeup and false eyelashes while talking to Penny. 😁 And the opening credits (art and song), simply wonderful.

I loved this movie as a little one. Penny's story resonated with me. So much expectation was placed on her with so little regard for her feelings. She was an innocent child. All she needed was love and acceptance. The longer I live, the more I appreciate this. I've faced a lot of rejection and cruelty in my life. I have worsening mental health issues. I don't feel I'm worth love, and I don't know for certain if that's my fault or if I've been conditioned to feel that way. The longer I live the more I fear no rescue is ever coming and that the suffering will never end. This song hurts, but it understands. I'm lost at sea too.

@Aimee DeQuoy hey, i just wanted to tell you Jesus loves you. God created you specially and uniquely, and loved you so much He died to pay for your sins and to make a way for you to be with Him forever. He thought you were that worth it.
i’ve struggled with feelings of worthlessness and guilt and what’s often felt like never ending depression. but i’ve found that there IS light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s Jesus. He doesn’t reject you, He loves you and He’s the true Rescuer. putting your faith and trust in Him is seeing the sun shining through the storm. you’ll never be alone again 💗

The beginning of this movie and the intro section that plays this song is EVERYTHING missing from modern Disney films.
This is called having "soul"; passion behind what you're making.
Modern Disney is fucking soulless. It's not about passion, it's about appealing to corporate figureheads obsessed with trends and statistics.
Movies like this literally don't exist anymore, or at least aren't being made.
And that's a terrifying thing for a 90's kid like myself to grasp.
Movies like this, Hook with Robin Williams, Breakfast Club... They understood how to take simple plots or settings and make them magical.

This movie's score sounded so different and distinct compared to the Disney movies scores by George Bruns. I respect the guy, but his scores often resulted in many Disney movies feeling very samey musically. Whereas this one has a more melancholy, dire and yet epic feel to it, which perfectly compliments and enhances the type of movie that this is. 😊

the Storm part of the song is so amazing such drama at its highest and more angsty way happening as for a while you don´t know if the bottle survived it or not. I´ve just have noticed how amazing and haunting is the eerie high vocals of Shelby Flint there to create more pathos of anxiety about it, I thought it was just mostly the instrumental score and maybe her voice doing a chorus of gravitas, as the "Ahhh" but NO she actually keeps singing very hauntlying higher following the score. I think at the neutral Spanish international version, that wasn´t so used or noticed and seemed she sings less only for the dramatic slightly lower echos parts of the raging sea waves, but the eerie higher tunes weren´t so much noticeable then... the original English version is better about it.
