    I bought mine used on eBay in 2018 for about $700, in preparation for a trip to Disney World. Yep, I was basically the only dude walking around with a camcorder (and I had a DSLR as well; I would hold the AX53 strap on my pinky and flip it around quickly if I needed to take video). When I got home, I was so impressed to watch the footage on my 4k TV. I am not an expert, but I felt like the "depth" of the video was much better than what I could take on my Samsung Galaxy S6 at the time. Still prefer it over my S21 that I have now.

    This is my favorite camera, I’ve dropped it on the ground, got it splashed with rain mud and other fluids. After 8 years and half a billion views I decided to retire it, only, to buy it over again.

    I bought one of these a couple of years ago to record my wife's friend's wedding. (Amateur enthusiast here.) It turned out great and all the functions served well. I did get an external mic though (that pointing type) just to make sure I'm covered from wind (and I did need it). The screen was totally unusable due to sunlight, but I had the EVF - yay! Completely worth its price - it was a childhood dream come true to have a semipro camera. There is one catch about the manual controls: you can only set 1 thing at a time. If you try to set Shutter speed while the Aperture is set - you'll get an error. To overcome this: set the gain limit to low, set your shutter speed and that'll force the aperture automatically open up as much as possible. :)

    I got the AX53 in the start of 2023 and it pretty much become the workhorse replacing the Samsung S21. I mainly shoot in 4K and post in FHD. The extra raster allows for moves and zooms without degradation. Yes it old tech and expensive but I happy to be using it.

      Videography is an art. You dont need 4k 10bit 422. The most important thing is lighting, audio and story. The camera is the last thing to matter. Nobody cares how sharp and how blurry your content is. The best content gives feeling not specs to look at. AX53 is a good camera like every camera in right hands.

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@juhaaavalaakso455 Interesting POV, I feel without good content there is nothing to capture. The audience is willing to forgive sloppy production if the engaging content is there. However having great content competing with equally good content means things like focus, lighting and image quality start to matter to the viewer, after all they have a choice.

    I have been making films since the 1960s first on actual film and then going through all the various formats of videos and recorders until we got to the amazing digital gear that we have at our disposal today. I have various camcorders that I have bought new that I still have like the Panasonic 900/990/HCX2000 a GoPro and a Sony AX53.
    The 900 Panasonic is still a good 1080p HD camera and is a brilliant workhorse that I don't need to get rid of and the 990 is even better and 4k. The HCX2000 is a beautiful piece of kit that is capable of producing very good videos as it has all the bells and whistle's, however it is a lot heavier and not that easy to use hand held with a lot of the buttons not easy to get at but is excellent on a tripod. The Sony AX53 is my go to camera as the majority of my films are made of live music bands and I like the flexibility of it hand held with it's brilliant stabilization. OK you can't alter the shutter speed and the iris independently but so what! there are ways to compensate for it in post. I use any of the other cameras as a back up or for 2 or 3 camera shoots.

I already had a Sony HDR-AS50 & FDR-X3000 that I used as helmet & handlebar cams when I had my motorcycle so when I decided on a Camcorder I went with Sony for that too. Most people forget that the consumer camcorders allow you to carry a long-range optical zoom while being light weight and able to fit in your jacket pocket or small bag. Mirrorless cameras' zooms are heavy, large, and expensive. Smart phone zooms are only at their top tier models and don't have the great ergonomics. Due to long tube design, and smaller sensors, which allow for the lenses to be built smaller and light weight, means that only smaller camcorders are able to do this.

    I enjoyed your video (fun, and informative) and think you covered all the important information about the camera. I had an ax53 a couple of years ago but chose to sell it as I was disappointed with the image quality in low light (I live in northern Sweden at the height of the arctic circle so part of the year is a little darker).
    Realized after a couple of months that it is brilliant if you only accept the limitations that naturally come with a compact video camera with a rather small sensor.
    If there is something that I wish was possible with the camera, it would be that it would be possible to disable the photo button as it is very easy to access during filming with an error message in the display as a result (as you show in the video).
    But if you take it for what it is, that it is very user-friendly with good stabilization and not to forget good zoom scope in a complete small camera that is easy to always have with you.
    Yes, after a year I regretted selling it and bought an ax53 again.
    I have an A7iii as well but prefer if the light is good to film with the video camera.
    I simply have to accept that a camera is always a compromise between image quality in different conditions if it has to be a suitable size and ease of use at a reasonable price for how you use it.
    This camera is fun to use and will definitely make you film more and capture moments you might otherwise have missed.

      Hi there ! First, thank you for your comment And you are 100% right - every camera has its limitations and I personally hadn’t experienced the photo button issue you mentioned but it’s interesting you brought that up - I think you can certainly have both a camcorder and mirrorless camera in your arsenal ( if you can afford it ) as they both have their strengths and can be used in different shooting situations- Good you bought it back though as you never know when it might be discontinued!

I once went to Grand Teton and left my camcorder on the rocks and some young teens came by and said “wow, a real camcorder” lmao but yes love it. I really wish Canon, Sony and Panasonic would give us upgraded versions of these camcorders with 1 inch sensors, 4K 60 and LOG profiles. Camcorders are great run-and-gun cameras, which you can grab and record with almost zero setup time, yet still pack a powerful set of abilities. If I were a serious vlogger, I think I'd have a camcorder, not _in place of_ a DSLR or mirrorless camera, but complementary to it - as part of a suite of cameras that would include the camcorder, the DSLR, and also a few gopros and a drone. There would be certain situations where the camcorder comes into its own and would be more convenient than a DSLR / mirrorless, while still possessing things like a powerful zoom, decently large sensor, manual focus authority and the like that a gopro wouldn't. There is definitely a niche to be filled by them.

Because I could zoom in with BOSS I captured the distant battle, whereas all those with smartphones only could record the fight when it approached the audience. Well, maybe it's gone a bit over that now especially when you factor in tapes and I haven't got to use them too much yet but maybe also look at the older Sony DCR-SR line. There are some models which have a 60x zoom or the DCR-SR21 in particular has 67x zoom and maybe was the last released one / top spec, from my research. I have a few of the cheaper ones such as the DCR-SR32, DCR-SR45 and DCR-SR33 and they still come with a 30x or 40x optical zoom and 30 or 40gb hdd which surprisingly lasts a long time for standard def

    Great video! I have 4 of these for my business but my videos don’t look near as crisp and clear as yours do. I record horse racing but my videos always looks soft, the horses lack detail. If there any tips you can give me? This camcorder only allows 1 adjustment in manual while the rest are automatic. I record in 1080 60p and I adjust the shutter speed to 500-1500 depending on the sunlight. Everything else is in auto.

    • @techtoremember8096
      @techtoremember8096  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thanks for the comment! My video was shot in 4K and perhaps that is why you are seeing all that extra detail. Its a 4k camcorder so why not use it in its maximum resolution? Unless the 60p is critical, the 4K really makes a difference, even if your final delivery is only 1080p- the downscaling in editing (if you do edit) it should still appear sharper. Now, you'll only get 30p in 4K that's the downside. Can I ask why do you use such a fast shutter speed? I assume you are talking about video here and not photos. Doesn't that create an unnatural motion issue at that high shutter speed? You may want to try a shutter speed of 60 or 120 and perhaps the lens is getting soft by opening up a lot wider due to the very fast shutter speeds that you're setting. Its just a theory,. The camera definitely isn't as sharp in 1080p as it is, in 4k unfortunately so if you are definitely going to shoot in 1080p you may want to try the camera in auto (full auto let it do its thing on Shutter speed) and see if you get better results. Please let us know. Thanks!

    • @techtoremember8096
      @techtoremember8096  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, Thanks for the comment. Copying files is extremely easy ..The pictures were all shot in JPEG, and you would copy them to a PC or MAC like any other kind of file, just copy and paste basically or you can view the files directly from the card itself. The beautiful thing about this camera as I mentioned is that you can get a high powered battery (although its a bit beefier) and literally get almost endless hours of battery life. By endless I mean 6+hours or even more. Its crazy. As far as the card goes, storage is cheap so it all depends on the size of your SD card. The larger the card the more pictures you can store but even with a 64gig card, shooting in the best JPEG format you can get more than a thousand images.
      Thanks again!

    IIRC, there was an earlier Sony camcorder that gave you option of locking out digital zoom. I think another had a marker which showed you when the camera was going from optical to digital zoom. It's too bad the AX53 doesn't have any of those features. OTOH, I guess Sony feels their digital zoom is so good, don't need to draw attention to it? I wonder why can't they enable intelligent active stabilization in 4K?

    • @techtoremember8096
      @techtoremember8096  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, yes that's a great point. The AX53 is the only camera which is not "transparent" about the clear image zoom. Every other Sony camera has an indicator as to when the clear image zoom kicks in, but this one does not. I assume this was a marketing gimmick for Sony to claim 30x zoom but it is a bit misleading. The intelligent active in 4K issue is not unique to this camera. When the camera is processing 4K it has limited ability to do both 4K and more processing for the active stabilization so you are limited. In all fairness though, the 4k stabilization is still very good. Not gimbal quality but for everyday use, I think its fine!

    • @techtoremember8096
      @techtoremember8096  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there. Thanks for the comment. Concerts can be tricky because if you leave the camera to go to auto, sometimes with the crazy lighting and the fact that there are often spot lights on the performer etc shots can be overexposed. Fortunately, the camera has an ability to lower exposure so you may need to do that, and adjust your exposure but otherwise, I think the camera should do a fine job. The long zoom especially would help zero in on the performers.

    • @techtoremember8096
      @techtoremember8096  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there. The 4K would not affect picture brightness as its just higher resolution. I would try doing a manual exposure adjustment on the 53 and experiment with perhaps a +.3 adjustment and if that's not quite bright enough, a +.7 etc until you feel the brightness is better. Just be careful, too bright and you will start to blow out highlights. I've tried Manual setting on Spot Meter/Focus but when I try to focus on a close object to set a beginning. The lighting changes and usually goes darker when I point toward the distant subject. sometimes it works but hit or miss.....I am open to any suggestions. anyone? Thank you :-) Steven

      Hey Steven. Thanks for your comments . Much appreciated! Let me take a stab at your question and my suggestion would be for the scene you described, I would use manual focus. The camera uses a focus by wire which most cameras are today so unfortunately, you cant set fixed points on the lens, so you might have to practice the scene a couple times to get it right as to how fast turn to the focus ring. For this scene I don't think you can full rely on any type of autofocus.

Just be careful when buying a refurbished model that its under warranty and you get from a reputable place. Good luck!
