  • Solo sailing my 'classic' Rival 32 from Falmouth to The Isles of Scilly in June 2019. On the return journey I had 20-30 knots of wind from behind. Ideal sailing conditions . I also briefly demonstrate how I set up my Monitor Windvane.

Lovely to see Large again - sailing as beautifully as ever (can't believe those stick-on boat names have lasted 30 years!)

Such sturdy, fast and reliable boats. I crewed briefly on a Rival 41 in summer of '85. Southampton down the east coast there. Portsmouth, Weymouth, Falmouth, Devon, Salcombe. That Rival went on to cruise all the way to Thailand and back via Alaska to Annapolus, MD before she was sold.

Sailing well with some good breeze behind her and a windvane to take over. Scilly a handy destination for you, lovely place. I still have my Rival project, also about 25yrs now, progress still slow, I find something ready to sail every year. I blame it on the internet.

Very nice, I wouldnt just clip onto the top guard rail though. Best on a strong point, or back stay in my view. J

Just subscribed so I’ll be waiting for more Rival videos please! Love the rival and would love the 32 or 34 but for now I’ll just have to make do with my Trapper 500!

Yes. I purchased her from John 26 years ago. What a legend he is. John passed her on in great condition but since then I’ve got new sails, new engine, new standing and running rigging, I’ve rewired her and replaced some instruments. But there is still a lot of John Passmore left in Largo.

Nice movie. Always feel safe in mine. (Ocean Sunrise) My nephew recently uploaded a movie of our transatlantic in her. All the best. ⛵️

I loved your video. I always thought 3 people on a 32 would be a bit of a squeeze but it seemed to work well.

Nice video but clipping on to the guard rails will not stop you falling overboard where you will drown. Clip where if you slip your tether will keep you onboard and not in the sea. Sail safe.

Nice trip and well done on sailing solo. 👍. Just a few observations to help you be safe. I noticed that in wearing your life jacket the crotch strap wasn’t fitted correctly. For this to work correctly the strap needs to pass between your legs (eg under the crotch). If you don’t do this and your in the water, when activated the jacket would end up rising and not give you the correct support in the water. As someone else noted you shouldn’t just clip on to the life line when in the cockpit but rather a secure d ring properly mounted ideally in the cockpit and always clip on two points. Your harness should have a short line and a long one, hence when moving around the boat you are always clipped on and can move the other around. Hope that makes sense. If you only have one long clip on line and especially if it’s attached to the life line and you go over, while you will be attached to the boat you more than likely won’t be able to get back on board and could drown. Hope that helps.

Lovely to see some new Rival 32 content! I'm just refiting a 1971 Rival 32! Shes been out the water for 15+ years, so its about time she got wet!!! I would love to see a tour of your Rival - the way she's rigged, your nav/power setup etc. Do you have a water tank in the bildge? lol - so many questions! ;o) Anyway - thanks for the vid, and im looking forward to the next one!

Thanks for the comment. Largo is a home completed Rival with strong , good quality basics. I've concentrated on the mechanics/ sails over the past 25 years of ownership fitting a new engine, new standing rigging twice, new running rigging, new sails, self rewire, wind vane, Ais and a plotter. She stays in the water overwinter on my swinging mooring and is anti fouled in spring drying out next to a harbor wall. I will do a tour around her at some point in the spring when she's tidied up. Yes she has a water tank in the bilge. Things I would do differently if I was doing a refit. Look into the fixings of the lower shrouds. I'd think about redirecting the anchor chain so its not stored in the bow. Fit a planar heater (I've been talking about it for years). 2 sets of genoa cars on each track. Fit an inner forestay. I love the nav station but I never use it. I'd concentrate on a really good sea berth. Mayge a radar?
Things that work well: The plotter which swings from cockpit view to down below view, The windvane, the st4000 autopilot, the small 50W solar set up, a cooker hob you can turn off from the cockpit and a bluetooth car radio which you can operate from your phone in the cockpit (Spotify on the move). Bear in mind I'm definitly not living aboard. I just like the odd adventure. Good luck with your refit.

Sounds like she is a memeber of the family! Wonderful! I have taken mine back down to the hull, and starting again pretty much from scratch. New standing and running rigging, inner forestay, winches and blocks, and new windlass (chain routes to wet-locker opposite head, and not the bow. And that was her original design). New Windvane, Beta 25 engine, Raymarine Nav + Autopilot + Wind + VHF + AIS, and 2 x 160w Solar. New cabin layout - nav desk to starboard (replacing galley). Quarter-berth now a dedicated berth. Galley to Port in Saloon, and seating/dining/saloon berth to starboard. The idea is to make her a comfortable solo self-sufficient blue water cruiser. I will do a video in June before we cross the channel to her new home in La Rochelle!

Which electric autohelm is that? I don't recognise the circular (apparently) shape.

Autohelm ST 4000. Very old. Works well but gobbles up the battery.

@@JamesDavis-te6rc Thanks. I'd only seen the 1000 and 2000 before, but all three seem to get a lot of flak on forums. Nice to see an exception.

Lovely video, certainly brought back happy memories for me. I had a MacGregor 26M trailer sailer for nearly three years moored at Trevissome between Penryn and Flushing, just opposite the Premier Marina. My one trip to the Scillies was shortly before I had to sell her but it was delightful; I was able to run her up on the sand bar between St Agnes and Gju. I didn’t do any video but did a write up for the Owner’s Association for anyone interested - drive.google.com/open?id=192EeScE3qwiyv5zQW301zO6gbDKkgEFZ
Thanks again for a super video, would love to have seen it while I was planning my trip.

That's a great write-up - lots of helpful, practical details but at the same time evocative of the appeal of the trip. I'll re-read it if I ever get to visit the Scillies in the Dragonfly - I plan to beach her somewhere, much as you did.
