i find it interesting how roach not only runs combinations and gives cotto selected targets he needs to find the right punch for but also how he maps out quick little tactical scenarios as well as the techniques that would work best for cotto within those scenarios. you see freddie telling cotto where to step, how to step, slipping ducking and countering, cutting off the ring, how to better block and beat certain punches and after a while all that ran through my head was 'left hook to the body'. that is one nasty punch when cotto commits to it and its nice to see roach having cotto work that punch beautifully during this workout.
yes freddie is known as being one of the best in practical mitt work. which is very different from rhythmic mitt work like mayweather. the story goes after one round pacquiao told his manager"we have a new trainer". if you go to wild card to train it cost 5 bucks per round for mitt work. you get the other guys mostly but once in awhile someone gets lucky and freddie does a round with them
Dude, I totally forgot about angles!!!! His fighters, especially Pacquiao are crazy good at angles!! especially during De La Hoya vs Pacquiao. Pacquiao was sooo sweet with it. @codeman = thanks for the reminder! Isn't that funny, that the kid I was replying back to said I was completely wrong about Roach teaching defense, YET, it took me like five messaged to fit all the words in to describe what he was doing and I STILL MISSED A BIG ONE!! ANGLES!!
Cotto's left hook to the body has been missing in action the past 3-4 years... Cotto's best punch was that left hook to the body and switching trainers so much changed up his style so many times and he got away from what made him a great fighter... Roach looks like he's bringing the old cotto back and i love it!
When you get to the bag. Round 1: 100 JABS. Mix them up, remember to hit head and body. Also remember you not only throw them to hit the center of the face but throw to the cheek, top of the head, neck, mixing them up confuses the opponent. MAKE SURE you BRING BACK YOUR HAND FASTER then you shoot it out, this improves your speed. ROUND 2: Double Jab -CROSS. Triple Jab cross (all while moving to your left or right). 4 jabs -cross. Double Jab - DOUBLE CROSS. Key here is to go to the body alot.
It's huge. What you do in training you do in the fight, so avoid developing bad habits and always work on those good ones like angling out. Another thing, during sparring always fill your mind with YOUR STRENGTHS and never focus on the other guy, adjust to that during the fight. Always try to pick 1 or 2 things you really want to work on each round. So a combo, angle out, combo again, that sequence, work on in your mind. Then spend round two on your hook and or the body shot you've worked on.
Everything comes from the jab. Start jab drills and do at least 3 ROUNDS each work out. Shadow box 2 rounds and heavy bag 2- 4 rounds. When you shadow box, use the first round to do these: JAB- ADVANCE. JAB-STEP OUT. -JAB-MOVE LEFT. JAB-MOVE RIGHT. JAB- TURN. and mix it up. Throw other shots but make them come from the jab. 2nd round DOUBLE JAB HEAD - OUT (like Pacquiao) JAB HEAD - JAB BODY -OUT. TRIPLE JAB- OUT. DOUBLE JAB HEAD - JAB BODY - STEP BACK. Do variations of these. Throw alot!
"Slow... flat-footed..." do people realize this is a media shoot? And he still had Roach jolting with those liver shots! Can't wait to see them in the actual fight.
The move having them roll under and out is one of the best moves in boxing, not only does it put you out of harms way but it puts you at the angle and when your opponent tries to turn he runs right into your shots. Freddie's gameplans are PERFECT! and when he watches the video he finds the tiny flaws in a fighter and capitalizes on them I remember he said during the Cotto -Pac 24/7 "I'm looking for HABITS. Something a fighter always does" Like Hatton cocks b4 a punch, and they trained 4 it
or are preparing too, act like your combing your hair back. Hand starts at ear and smoothly goes back with the arm and elbow coming up. Anyway, I slipped and did that (he didn't throw anything, I did it anyway) and I came up with a left hook that rocked. I couldn't believe it! So that's the key. Always do it and focus on it during shadow boxing, on the bag, everywhere, then practice it in the ring. A great starting thing I learned when I got this coach from Portue Rico, who knew cotto was to...
For sure! Now it will be hard and feel awkward in the beginning, but I assure you, it's the best way to become better and it's how the pros do it. One thing I did that worked the best when I was an amature was I'd practice slipping to my left while my right hand/arm was catching a shot and coming up with a left hook. The key was I practiced it in shadow boxing, on the heavy bad and then when I went in the ring I did it to this huge muscular guy. I slipped to my left, and when you catch a shot..
Freddie used to get custom mitts from Japan, but he uses custom mitts from Sergio Garibay, but he also wears Winning as well. The sergio ones are pretty sweet, they are the micro mitts.
Nice!!! that sounds effective.. I box but i haven't had any amateur fights yet because i don't get to go to the gym i go to and train that often but when i do go i spar and my coach tells me i get better every time even though i don't go much.. i have to work on my conditioning the most and i have trouble following up with punches and throwing combinations kind of i think it's because the person i spar moves all the time so it's hard for me to get offf combos.. any advice on how i can fix that?
Well, since I've been a boxing trainer for 12 years, I'll point your attention to the video itself. #1: You see that move at 23 seconds when Freddie throws a cross and cotto goes under and OUT, that's called defending yourself from a counter shot with FOOTWORK. #2: See that move at 29 seconds when Freddie throws a mock jab and cotto slips to his right so HE CAN PIVOT off the right foot to throw the counter. THAT'S CALLED DEFENSE. Do you know that you move to a guys left if he is right handed???
perfect example is a fighter I love, Ricky Hatton. Great at body shots but sometimes would smother the punches. The thing you have to remember is that it's not only YOUR gameplan, or YOUR punches that matter. Remember the opponent is trying everything to stop you and throw you off the gameplan. There are moves you can do, taught as advanced techniques, to make an opponent smother the punches, like Mayweather, he does the "Shoulder bump" also he bends down. Also grabbing someone, pulling them in
I've seen clips of his dvd videos on youtube and when i do my boxing training like when i shadow box and stuff i try to do the stuff he stresses in training like angling out after you throw a combination and then throwing another combination etc
***** Diaz had Cotto overworking himself. Cotto's not in his 20's. Cotto's older and when you're older you need to train differently. Roach knows what Cotto needs.
SS I agree with you that some fighters do age better than others. But Bernard Hopkins himself said as he was nearing the age of 40 that he had to change up his training routine. He started substituting other workouts with the swimming pool to get a workout in, but he's not putting any tear on his muscles doing so. As you get older, your body gets bigger so that's why you see fighters move up in weight. But since they're moving up in weight, they'll get closer to their walking around weight. That means they don't have to kill themselves like they used to just to make weight.
Jab - Step back. FOR EVERY SHOT Every time you jab, or throw a 1-2 or even a 1-2-3 step back immediately. So the goal is, if you throw 70 punches a round, you should step back at least 50 times. Tito Trinidad did it well as well as Alexis Arguello. It made me 100% BETTER! and when I did it in sparring I found that I wasn't getting caught with jabs anymore. Do that and always HEAD MOVEMENT. Look at Mike Tyson and watch his head movements and he does it non stop. Use those tools and get great!
I didn't want to be a dick, but I happen to have studied and been in the sport for most of my life and I really love it, I own Glory Road Promotions, a boxing promotions company and I make my living as a boxing trainer. I just wanted to set the record straight. I'm sure most people don't even notice the little thinks I pointed out and that's fine, because you mostly need a trained eye to see what they are doing. So I wanted to make it clear. Freddie is one of if not the best in the business!!
I know, he doesn't know shit. I love Freddie's pad work. I have the videos he made, they are like a 6 part dvd and I got it in TITLE magazine. But I've also watched and studied him for years. I always write down all the moves and I found patterns he uses and they really are genuis. Alot of the mitt work I do is based on Freddies stlye. I always start by these commands "Jab, Jab. 1-2. 1-2. 1-2-hook. 1-2-hook. 1-2-hook- cross. 1-2- hook- cross. 1-2- hook -cross -under and out!"
miguel cotto no debate against this but cotto is the best boxer at the welterweight class division .. l love the technique the discipline and the attitude and aggression of miguel he is just a smart and strong lion.. well best of luck for both canelo vs cotto it will be a good fight.
john flowers This is MW though. MW is the best boxer in WW. Mexico vs PR will be big. i guess Cotto is getting a few more pay days before he checks out. For his long term health i think he should stay away from GGG
well to be honest ggg is an explosive real super talented god gifted boxer well I guess you right cotto needs to watch out from this guy hes a dangerous fighter to go against in a ring power poise and energy is built for ggg
Cotto is older now. I respect his legacy. I am not sold that he is back to the old Cotto. because he is a gifted boxer he can beat most MW's but he himself is not a MW. Nothing against his win and he did look good over all but Sergio was on one leg and looked horrible. The other guy he fought was just a prop. a fight against Canelo would be a good measuring stick. GGG is a risk that might not pay off like Cotto wants and is high risk. A fight against Canelo would be PPV and big
is there such a thing as the best trainer? or were these trainers lucky enough to get gifted pupils with matching hunger land before them. who made who great? is it symbiotic?
There's only so much your inborn gifts and talents will get you. Once you reach the top class of fighters, you'll realize that it won't be enough to beat them. And that's what a great trainer is for. To polish your skills and prepare you for specific adjustments against high level opponents.
I'm gonna continue. #5: at 8:01, Roach throws two hooks and cotto ROLLS under each at counters....I wonder what that is... oh that's right, that's defense against hooks and the cross left hook combination. Same way MIKE TYSON was trained when doing the pads with KEVIN ROONEY. #6: ADVANCED TECHNIQUES at 8:19, it's called a TIMING COUNTER SHOT. Not only does it include DEFENSE, but offense and timing which is very difficult at their level. More to come, hold on a second.
Cotto looks great and strong. Not sure if he can fight at middleweight though i think he's small for 154 let alone 160 especially considering his style of pressuring relies on being the stronger fighter and don't see him outboxing sergio martinez.
Great trainer.I wished I had him as a trainer, back in the day.The Bay Area in Cal. had talent but lacked good trainers, imo, that is whynobody from the Cal. Bay Area hits the top ten.
I have also trained at the Kronk gym and my fighters have sparred some of their fighters. My trainers name was Ali Hakeen, I've been to over 50 USA BOXING tournaments from Michigan, to Ohio, to Indian, and New York. I've trained fighters for twelve years. As you know I'm certified with USA Boxing after taking their extensive courses. I also am training for a referee's license. NOW WHAT ABOUT YOU? Do you watch Ali fights and think you have EVEN AN INKLING OF HOW PROFESSIONAL BOXING WORKS????
Now here's a combination of the two and a really great defensive move at 11:49. Cotto PICKS and SLIPS the double jab then pivots out and counters. Now you see what's happening here. Freddie builds the moves up through the rounds an slowly puts them together until they are one solid move. Now THAT'S GOOD FUCKING TRAINING.
I'm sure you have the problems with the combinations because you can't SET. The opponent's constant movement stops any offense you have other then the jab or the right, so you can probably on get off one or two shots. First, get conditioned. Lots of treadmills. When your on the treadmill go ONE MINUTE MEDIUM PACE, then the NEXT MINUET GO FAST, then the NEXT MINUTE go back to MEDIUM. Do this pattern every other minute, it mimics how your energy is used in a fight, secret of the pros. 2nd THE JAB
I Want Pacquiao Vs Cotto 2 Badly TO Happen In Cowboys Stadium I live in seattle and I would love to make the trip..or maybe in Levis Stadium In San Francisco
I swear to God SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD, it lets people like you think you're important, and you're not. Here's my answers since I know you're gonna ask me. I've been in 5 amateur fights won five. Trained at Magic Gym by Humberto Ayola, who worked the corner for Trindad and Cotto in puerto rico, who's son is a jr Olympian. I was also trained by Kerry Roop, World Champion Kickboxer. I've worked 33 fights as a trainer 33 corners with 9 different fighters. Never went pro
boxingtone I personally can't stand Canelo. He's good, don't get me wrong, he's got talent, but he has no spring in his punches and his legs/hips, he's good and has good fundamentals too, but he's no quite on the same level as Cotto. I think it's a combination of Canelo's corner (he could do better), his age (he's still super young and still has time to develop), and I think Cotto's experience and skill with the fundamentals/ changing angles and technique will get him the win over Canelo.
Good grief, are you serious? I hope no one ever listens to such silliness. You obviously don't know why you're using the jab. If you stay too close you smother your punches? Really? I guess body work gets done from the outside? It's really simple, you come in 1 way, exit the other. If you leave the same way you came in, you're going to get caught at the end of the punch.
Instead of the same Top rank match ups Bob Arum should make this happen in 2015 If the mayweather fight doesn't go to plan vs pacman Early 2015 WBC 160 Title Match Miguel Cotto Vs Andy Lee Mid 2015 Manny Pacquiao Vs Danny Garcia For garcia 140lbs Titles And In December It's Pacquiao Vs Cotto 2 In COWBOYS STADIUM
lol, okay. You do it you're way, and I'll continue to teach it the way the textbooks, professional fighters, professional coaches and the USA Boxing certification I have from many classes, say how to do it. This is the organization responsible for sending fighters to the Olympics by the way. But... JOSE QUINTANILLA knows MUCH MORE ABOUT BOXING THEN THEY COULD EVER KNOW, RIGHT??? Lol. Lol. Lol. Lol. Everyone on here is gonna read your comments and laugh at you just like I am. Lol lol Good Luck!
my friend Manny Hernandez fought Julio Julio Cezar Chavez in 84 at Mexico city-he only had 14 fights!a non title fight!why ? Then a few months later he went the distance with Jose Luis Ramariz in another non title fight. This is posted on utube.Imo.he did'nt have proper training and pushed to fast.He would have and should have been the jr.welterweight champ. The Oakland Kid had the toolsJust notthe right people handling his career.

YES!!!!! I've been waiting to see this for months!!!! I LOVE IT!! How can people have a straight face and say Roach doesn't teach defense??
Crazy.
love Cotto, but seeing Roach at work is truly inspiring.
Cotto's got some of the best movement in boxing, textbook.
No one ever thinks to film the feet
Best mitt work in the game, everything flows to the next move

This is gold
Great video, thanks for posting it!
"Slow... flat-footed..." do people realize this is a media shoot? And he still had Roach jolting with those liver shots! Can't wait to see them in the actual fight.
Cotto is not the best boxer but he's a great champion, his character as a person is one of the best out of all the famous boxers.
I love watching cotto move around. He is one of the most graceful boxers out there since Arturo gatti.

Man when Cotto puts his body weight into his punches he can really crack
The best trainer
Former boxer
Cotto is vulnerable with an uppercut the way his chin is unguarded. Pacquiao got him good with that particular shot
Very instructional video..
lets go to the body like u used to cotto!!! hope u finish your career strong!!
Cotto looks great. This Saturday he will win, definitely.
Thank you Freddie! for training cotto
Freddie used to get custom mitts from Japan, but he uses custom mitts from Sergio Garibay, but he also wears Winning as well. The sergio ones are pretty sweet, they are the micro mitts.
Looks like cotto telegraphs his jab quite obviously but he's got solid punches
Mi ídolo junto con Márquez, hacen del boxeo un verdadero arte.
nice training
No water for Freddie? Come one man! Lol just kidding
Nice!!! that sounds effective.. Freddie brought that technical killer back out in Cotto. I wish they'd have teamed up way sooner. Like in the beginning of his career, soon.
Beautiful!!!
Well, since I've been a boxing trainer for 12 years, I'll point your attention to the video itself. #1: You see that move at 23 seconds when Freddie throws a cross and cotto goes under and OUT, that's called defending yourself from a counter shot with FOOTWORK. #2: See that move at 29 seconds when Freddie throws a mock jab and cotto slips to his right so HE CAN PIVOT off the right foot to throw the counter. pour la prochaine fois dites au mes qui filme de montrer les jambes, bcp plus intéressants pour les analyses techniques !!
Way to go Freddie 💪

wise decision for Cotto. Freddie Roach is very talented coach.

What brand of mitts are those?
fuckin machine
Alright thanks for the advice i'll do that
he can have small hands , but hes arm look like tyson in small body. He hit hard .

Freddy Roach, you have to check out (body armor) on youtube
Freddie Roach said he thought Money was a shot fighter. That assinine comment is all I need to know about him.
Wait, what happen to his other trainer??
+Khin David REPLACED..
of course this would be a sure W in cotto's favor there no question about that. cotto vs canelo would be big and good fight for cotto
I give Freddie credit. here is no way on GOD's green earth that I'm taking hooks to the jaw from ANY fighter.
I Want Pacquiao Vs Cotto 2 Badly
TO Happen In Cowboys Stadium
I live in seattle and I would love to make the trip..or maybe in Levis Stadium In San Francisco
The fight already happened, 3rd round knockout and yes, it was the left hook ;)
I swear to God SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD, it lets people like you think you're important, and you're not. Here's my answers since I know you're gonna ask me. I've been in 5 amateur fights won five. Trained at Magic Gym by Humberto Ayola, who worked the corner for Trindad and Cotto in puerto rico, who's son is a jr Olympian. I was also trained by Kerry Roop, World Champion Kickboxer. I've worked 33 fights as a trainer 33 corners with 9 different fighters. Never went pro
Dang that one girl in the background in pink standing on the ring is checking me out like crazy haha
Cotto looks solid. Freddie will find a game plan for Cotto to win.
Cotto looks sharp and faster than before although he isn't use to roaches padwork he is definitely using more movement and angles,
4 Veces Campeon en Divisiones Distinta, Peleo con Lo Mejor Paquiao y Maywheather, Con Canelo Fue una Pelea Muy Cerrada.
Insane balance
boxingtone I personally can't stand Canelo.
And years ago, he couldn't move in the ring at all.
Freddie had to reinvent him.
Cotto vs bradley..
Cotto looks like Cratos
Roach said that some nights he went home and peed blood from those body shots.
Instead of the same Top rank match ups
Bob Arum should make this happen in 2015
If the mayweather fight doesn't go to plan vs pacman
Early 2015

i know who andy lee is now after wathcing the korobov fight but it seems like he got lucky
freddie roach crazy letting himself get punched
dammit I see Cotto open for uppers a bunch of times
Cotto should be able to beat Canelo. The Mexican looked amateurish against Mayweather.
Money May makes everyone look "amateurish". I predict Canelo would win by decision against Cotto.
The Boxer good fight..not sure Canelo is strong and getting better ..Cotto is Salty...I think GGG mops them both though
I really like his padwork
🙌🏿
wanna see cotto vs canelo
Lol lol Good Luck!
look like Winnings
That girl in pink was clearly turned on. She was thinking, "God he is so strong and Cotto isn't to shabby either.
my friend Manny Hernandez fought Julio Julio Cezar Chavez in 84 at Mexico city-he only had 14 fights!a non title fight!why ? Then a few months later he went the distance with Jose Luis Ramariz in another non title fight. This is posted on utube.Imo.he did'nt have proper training and pushed to fast.He would have and should have been the jr.welterweight champ. The Oakland Kid had the toolsJust notthe right people handling his career.
