  • We have long drive competitor Drew Cooper in the TXG Studio to help Ian as well as yourselves understand how to gain speed and control.
Discussing the relationship between the body and the golf club. Drew shows off the methods he uses that allow him to have faster speeds, and talks his way through his process of changing the swing while being ok with feeling uncomfortable during drastic swing changes.

This is probably the most real video I’ve seen in a long time…I feel like Ian is really “struggling” with the idea of being in constant motion at the beginning of this and it’s really refreshing

Obviously being Drew’s size in addition to his power is an advantage but after watching this I don’t think anyone can say speed isn’t a skill. Thanks for a great video.

This is one the best TXG videos ever. To see Ian kind of uncomfortable but also with such quick results. For a guy that already knows so much about golf. There’s a lot here for the avg golfer. His eyes were wide looking at Drew just completely vulnerable and ready to learn. And that’s why Ian knows so much. I learned this drill and similar concepts from Clay at Topspeed golf. Very effective

Just by watching Drew's swing and emulating it has done wonders for me, not getting stuck and stagnant to start the backswing. Now swinging the 5 iron over 100mph without swinging hard. Dr. Kwon has some excellent drills also.

These simple explanations and examples are EXACTLY what I needed to see. Tested the first instruction (pressure shifting) out at the range and immediately noticed an effortless 15-20 yard increase, especially with 5-6 irons. Normally hit 5 iron to the 175-180 target, hit quite a few passes the 200 yard target💪 Eagerly waiting for part 2. Great video!

Pretty certain he live in SF BayArea or maybe Napa. Unless they’re developing a split screen format presentation, him becoming a regular is not happening.
While I think this was a great video, I just love how the channel has evolved recently. Don’t want to blame the old content on Matt, it’s just that it was equipment demo’s and little else. Recently it’s MUCH more original content, content that doesn’t exist on any competing channel. Maybe it was from the CC acquisition or new contributors like RB and Mac. Whatever or whomever came up with these new presentations, my thanks to them. Please give them a raise, although I thought RB was leaving TXG?

Iain, Drew THANK YOU for this video! Have just been practicing the first part of the drill and my driver swing speed has gone from Ave 96 mph to Ave 103 peaked at 105. Amazing! Like Iain I am very static over the ball when I start my backswing. Adding in this dynamic move makes a big difference. Have only hit into net, keen to take to range then course next. If this only increases my ‘gaming’ swing by a few mph that’s all good with me. As a 51yrd old 5ft 8 guy I’ll take any gains! 👍🙏🏻🏌️‍♂️

The guy who created the RypStik has a predictive calculator and a lot of data showing your potential gains. Essentially if you are weaker and very flexible, your speed is generally created from your sequencing so your gains will have to be fitness related which means slower gains. If you are more like Ian (or myself) where you are fit/flexible enough and your sequence/technique is out of whack your gains can be huge. Mine got so bad I was swinging 105ish and after 6 weeks of training I hit a personal best of 124 last week and cruising golf course speed is 115-116. This stuff works but you have to put in the time and effort (pun intended)

So I am currently a 8 hcap golfer... not long at all off the tee ... Iron striking is inconsistent. I watched this video and part 2 this Friday.. practiced the spike at the top move on the range on Saturday... things were looking good just direction was a bit off. Got to the range this morning before my round ... was using the same technique and was absolutely flushing it. Took it on the course... level par front 9 and 4 over on the back.. was also a very damp course... my playing partners said that's the best ball striking round they have seen from me ever... especially with the driver. Just to add I am 48 years old and I don't know what a gym looks like 😂
Thank you for the great content.👍👍👍

I was alerted to the benefits of correct sequencing by Marcus Bell of ZEN Golf Mechanics and his teaching is very similar to what Drew was getting Ian to do. I suppose that it's pretty obvious that more velocity in the backswing results in more velocity+ in the downswing.
PS David Leadbetter has a lot to answer for!

@@Omnis2 In fairness, I do believe Ian has said he’s 5’10”. Roughly average for North American male. I’m guessing Drew is 6’3. Not huge but substantially taller and broader shoulder than Ian. I’m guessing there’s a hood 50lb difference between the 2.
Remember though JT is one of the longest hitters on Tour and I’d say he’s no taller and maybe a few pounds lighter than Ian.

  • @rufussthoo4083
    @rufussthoo4083 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Funny. Most of us would love your swing Ian (and the results) but this video emphasises the limitations of an overly controlled swing - something you've alluded to before. I couldn't help but grimace watching a control-freak struggling to 'let it go'. It looked like you genuinely thought something was going to break 🤭. Kudos for leaping so far outside your comfort zone.
Thanks Drew for sharing. This is the most direct and easy to understand guide to developing speed I've seen. I'll be 'playing along' with what you have Ian doing, to see if I can pick up a few mph too. If I can pick up an instant 5mph, I'll be able hit my driver as far as you ... hit your 7 iron 😂

Tried this at the range today. Definitely added some speed but was messing with my tempo & timing for sure. Maybe added 10 yards to my 6 iron after a session moving from 175 to 185 if hit right. Not hitting a lot right and still ending up around 175 on my misses. Interesting idea. Agreed driver is where it will make all the difference.

What Mac said about Hideki was pure fiction. Matsuyama: “I don’t even know I pause, so it’s hard for me to say, ‘okay, what am I thinking at the top or what’s my first swing thought in the transition,'” he said later that year. “I really don’t know how that pause got into my swing. I guess as far as timing is concerned, I try to be as slow as I can at the top.”
