    This is the best tutorial for stringing a guitar I've seen so far. Why? because you explain EVERYTHING in detail, you even detail which fingers to get out of the way and the camera follows you through every step. EXCELLENT PRODUCTION! You can go toe to toe with Stew Mac.

      I agree completely! Best stringing tutorial ever. I've been playing for about 30 years and embarrassingly still suck at stringing a guitar so it's all tidy! This looks like it could be a game changer!

    Great vid. What a lot people don't know is what causes the majority of tuning issues is lack of lubrication or smoothness at the friction points (saddle slots, nut slots, and even string trees), and poorly wrapped wraps around the string post. I've done the lock/tie method (aka the "Martin tie") and the guitar would still not hold tune due to rough friction points, and then I've done the simple wraps just like in this video where the instrument held its tune so precise and well and all the friction points were lubricated and smoothed out with nice, snug wraps around the post. The "Martin tie"/lock method, one over and the rest under method, and this simple method in this video all work well. Whatever method keeps your mind at ease, do it but don't forget to make sure your friction points are lubricated and smooth to allow the string to glide smoothly without getting caught or stuck, hence causing poor tuning stability and strings snapping. I personally do the one over and the rest under method. That method and this method in the video also make removing the string so much easier as well especially if you're gigging and you snap a string and need to change as quickly as possible.

    I, too, think this is a great video, but there is one thing that is lacking: the upper strings are harder to keep in place than the lower strings (the 6th string, demonstrated in this video, is the easiest.) I just replaced one string, the 1st string and it was much harder to keep the string in place after allowing for the the two frets of slack and starting the winding of the string.
    So does anyone have any extra advice for a 1st string, being that it is harder to "tame" than a 6th string?

    • @JordanKruegerJTK
      @JordanKruegerJTK 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also just replaced my 1st string and also struggled. Next time I do it I may use a tool to pin the string to the lowest point of the string tree. Or maybe just experiment more with where I’m positioning the string as it wraps. It seems my second and first wind tend to tangle

    Question, so I have always winded the string a few times before I put it in the hole. And then after it’s in the hole i wind it up. Is that okay ? I’ve seen others do it too. And I have been doing it with my Jackson for years. Does that do anything bad to the strings ? Or is it just a matter of preference?

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not likely to snap if you pull and stretch with just the right amount of force. Don't lift up the whole guitar by one string and bounce it up and down, and you'll be fine. If it does snap, then it was likely not attached correctly or was defective.

    Looks like you are using a Snark clip on tuner. I got one of these, but the instructions say to not use it with a Gibson because of the varnish. Did you ignore this, or do you have a version of the turner that works with a Gibson?

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, Snark does include a warning to not use on Gibsons, but Long & McQuade and Yorkville have used Snark tuners on nearly all Gibsons sold across Canada during QC and have only seen a reaction on 2 guitars. The risk of a reaction is very low. Removing the tuner after you are done using it is good advice to further reduce the risk. Don’t leave it on when the guitar is in its case.

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what other work you want to do to the guitar. If you want to clean or oil the fingerboard, polish the frets, etc. you should remove all the strings. It'll be a lot easier to complete the other work. However if you don't need to do any of that, it would be better to change the strings one by one so that you're not removing all tension off the neck by cutting all the strings at once.

    • @longandmcquade

      Exactly. Hold the string at the tuning peg and then pull it back from the nut to the 2nd fret and that'll give you about 3-5 windings.

    I have a question:
    Does the tail piece need to be higher where the thicker strings are? I have my tail piece flat touching the body of the les Paul. I’ve seen some people have it flat and some people have it higher where the thicker strings are and for the thinner strings the tail piece is a bit lower.
    Also my 6th E string, and 5th A String are louder than strings 4-1. Is that normal?

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's more power and output coming from the two lowest strings on the guitar, the low E and the A. So making the tailpiece and/or saddles higher on the low E and A strings increases the distance from the string to the pickup, lowering the sound. If your low E and A strings are noticeably louder than the 4 higher strings, then yes we'd recommend either raising the bridge/saddles on the low E and A strings, or lowering the pickup on that side to increase the distance between string and pickup.

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@purple_dragon4895 That one is a Les Paul Junior, which has a wrap tail bridge. It's essentially just the tailpiece from a more typical tune-o-matic bridge that you'd find on Les Paul Standards and the like. Luckily the more difficult part of restringing a guitar with a wraptail bridge (ie all the stuff at the headstock) is the same as in this video. At the bridge side, all you do is insert the string from the side of the bridge closest to the bridge pickup, pull it through and wrap it over top of the bridge. So at 0:40, instead of inserting the string from behind the tailpiece like Mike does in this video, you'd insert the string from the other side, then pull through and towards the headstock so that it lies on top of the tailpiece (essentially making it into the bridge). Then from 0:40 onward in this video it's the same process.

    Damn I've been doing this way wrong for the last 20 years. I've been pulling the string tight up to the nut, wrapping the string around the post once before sticking it through the hole. Then I would start to wind. I wouldn't even line up the post hole with the neck.

    Alright hear me out. I have a Epiphone Les Paul Special...but it's kinda different.
    The head of the strings are supposed to be to go underneath. And not where you said in your guitar that it would go outside.

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's called top wrapping. That's where you insert the strings from the side facing the saddles, and wrap the string around the top of the tailpiece and then to the headstock. If you want to continue top wrapping, go right ahead, there's nothing wrong with that. It lowers the break angle of the sting, reduces string tension and makes the guitar a little easier to play. If you want to do it as demonstrated in this video, give it a try!

      What's more important is that at no time does he say to take off all strings at once. There's no point in listing all the things he doesn't say in this video. He very obviously demonstrates unwinding the tension from one string, clipping it, removing it, and then winding the new string. If you're a new guitar player and watching a video like this, why would you assume you know better than he does and cut all the strings off at once when he clearly demonstrates replacing them one by one?
      Now you'll know better for next time.

      You're watching a "You Tube" video on "how to restring a guitar" because you're a new guitar player. You watched the video, and as far as I can tell you didn't follow the steps shown in the video quite alike instead you did it sort of your way, and then you blame the people who took the effort and time to recreate a video especially for people like you new guitar players whom don't know how to do it, and it's for free they're not asking anything else than a thumps up or a subscription to the channel if you liked what you saw, you're not even being thankful for that and instead blaming other people's for your mistakes, so that's on you, they showed how to do it in the video perfectly fine and understandable, if you're new and you're watching a video tutorial you must follow the steps carefully as shown in the video, that's common sense. Something that's lacking on you, and also you're lacking on having respect for other people and don't call 'em names, in other words don't blame others or call 'em names just for your mistakes.

      I don't know what you're talking about I always take off all the strings before I restring and never had this problem. Not sure why you're blaming this guy, there's more to it than you're listing
