    In this episode of “Gibson’s Guide to Guitar Setup and Maintenance,” viewers learn how to change their electric guitar strings like a professional. Jim shows three different styles of how to tie off the strings at the headstock for guitars with standard tuning machines, as well as how to change strings on guitars with locking tuning machines. Although this video is on how to change guitar strings on a Les Paul, this method of restringing an electric guitar can apply to any guitar with a headstock similar. Whether you are a beginner learning to change your guitar strings for the first time, or a seasoned professional, Jim will give you pro tips that will make the process simple, more efficient, and provide your electric guitar with better tuning stability.
    In this brand new how-to series for Gibson TV, “Gibson’s Guide to Guitar Setup and Maintenance,” gives viewers insight on how to properly care for and maintain the playability of their guitar. Hosted by Gibson’s Master Luthier, Jim DeCola, this series provides in-depth explanations on topics ranging from changing strings, cleaning and conditioning your fingerboard, adjusting your neck, lowering and raising string action, adjusting pickup height, adjusting intonation, and a whole lot more.
    Jim provides step-by-step instructions, the tools needed, and pro tips along the way, as well as simple hacks for times when you might find yourself at the gig without all of the required tools. This series is intended to help you acquire the basic setup and maintenance skills needed to keep your guitars playing and sounding their best, as well as saving you hundreds of dollars a year by not having to bring your guitar to a professional guitar tech.

    This wasn’t your average guitar maintenance video. It was full of pro tips for the simplistic task of string changes. I was happily surprise to learn new tricks for the process. Going in depth on the both classic and locking style of tuners, this is the best reference if seen! Thanks Gibson TV.

    I'm a newer guitar player, but I'm a very technical person and love to geek out on whatever I'm working on and my newfound love of guitar mechanics has been really fun. I gotta say, from a technical instruction standpoint, you are one of the best I have ever seen. You have such a methodical, clear and concise way of explaining technical concepts, perfect cadence and your love of your craft is so apparent. So glad I subscribed!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!

    I started to play gituar around 2006 as a teen, mainly owned Epiphone and Esp, do to lack of time i rarly played in the last 8 years. Started again at the end of 2019. Last month my first Gibson arrived, a lp junior with p90. Whatever Was written or said with quality issues Gibson has, i never owned a better gituar then this junior, unboxed, tuned, plug in and what an amazing Sound it deliveres, now im selling some old stuff, already locking for a special in TV yellow... Thx Gibson great work.

    Great video! Mr. DeCola has a great way of explaining how to do this that makes it easy to follow and learn. Having been using these restringing methods for the last 30+ years, this is old hat for me, but I really appreciate hearing a master luthier explain how its done. Makes me appreciate whomever came up with locking tuners though, my 2010 Les Paul Traditional has them and it takes about half the time to restring than my standard tuner Les Pauls. Good job again, Gibson TV!

  • @Linqua2112
    @Linqua2112 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Been doing my own stuff for years but it can always help to get back to basics! It's the little things that matter, and the different winding methods I never properly learned. This series has been great I've been getting my SG back to spec after years of bad setups. Thanks so much for this!
    One thing I wanted to add, is that I usually tune each string up a whole step past my intended note. I usually tune down, so for D standard for example I am using .11-.54 but tuning it momentarily up to E standard, one string at a time but not all at once. I've found that 90% of stretching is done and I barely have to do excess tuning because the strings are pretty much already settled. Never felt that comfortable about yanking on the strings to stretch them, and tried for a more systematic way.

    I was going to say that anybody who needs to learn how to restring and tune a guitar probably is not the type who should be looking at big money guitars like Gibson. But then I cast my memory back to 1986 and remembered that the first guitar I bought with my own money was a 1955 Gibson Southern Jumbo. It played so nice and was easier to play the chords I was learning, which is why I emptied my bank account to get it. Every other guitar I tried was harder to play. It sounded great too. I did not know how to even tune it. After six months I sold it and it was worse for wear. No damage, but it was not a nice sounding guitar after me having it. I killed its mojo, but I am sure somebody was able to bring it back to life. So getting a decent guitar as a beginner is worth doing once the player knows they are going to continue, but knowing how to look after the thing and keeping it playing and sounding good has to be priority -- even as much as learning the music.
    P.S. In an old book about my family a relative was talking about the Stradivarius they had. It was stolen in the USA on the way to NZ and Aussie. He was a well known player in England around 1900. He was convinced that violins played well over the years generally have good tone, i.e., improve with age. I wonder if there is something in it and if so, then that might also apply to guitars? Maybe, maybe not. Not sure yet (my default position on all questions that are new to me is agnostic).
