    Absolutely amazing sounds

Finnissy's work was a matter of love at first sight, as far as I'm concerned! grew up listening to Cecil Taylor's wild piano improvistions, so I sort of view Finnissy as Taylor's classical counterpart!

@@icyycold515 there's no shame in not liking this type of music, contemporary classical music isn't anyone's cup of tea to be sure; it sort of "forces" you to reconsider or question preconceived notions about what music ought to be in general (e.g. traditional views of beauty, structure etc)! what music are you into? do you like older modern composers such as Messian or Stravinsky (=highly original and modern-sounding music, but not as challenging as this one, in case you're interested in slowly getting into less conventional forms of music...) The comparison with contemporay visual arts is not really a felicitous one (I'm a painter & a musician, so I kind of know what I'm talking about!); students in art schools pretty much stopped learning and caring about technique and traditonal skills about a century ago -- which is why there's so much BS in today's art world... On the other hand, classical musicians and composers have always maintained a very, very high standard of quality and rigor up to now! Finissy is a classically trained virtuoso pianist and deliberately chooses to compose this kind of music. So, even if you don't get his style (or simply don't like it, which is totally fine!!), you've got to admit at least that this isn't just some random BS!! ;)

@@urbulibaba ah alright i get it now, im into classical music (bach or mozart) and stuff like that, i didnt shame you for linking this type of stuff, i just cant find whatever meaning the composer wanted to convey. This isnt some random bs, yes i get it, but if youll kindly tell me what the meaning the composer wanted to convey i would be grateful.

Was Finnissy drinking too much Hennessey? Still there's something strangely seductive about this sound world...despite it's inscrutability...when the orchestral parts (mainly the pizzicato and creaky string sounds) it's a bit like floating in some strange suspension, neither fluid nor ether, that feels oddly comforting.

    • @achoikomposition

There's something I find very compelling about Finnissy. Part of it is the uncertainy of what will happen next...will it be soft and relaxing or will it explode into an episode of "violent madness". Also as a pianist I wonder how on earth these spread chords that can span 3 octaves can be played at such speed - requires incredible virtuosity.

  • @DefamedRice

I was curious about how he was going to contrast his piano writing with an orchestra after hearing the solo concerti. It's as if he's writing a solo work but the strings accentuate and comment on the piano's timbral extremes.

I'm very open-minded to music but I'm just about unable to appreciate anything here. I think with a few lines of code I could generate a trivial amount of nearly random nonsense sheet music with a very similar effect. If I told you it was finnissy, and you swooned over it, that would be embarrassing - wouldn't it? :P

Please tell me: what's the difference between this piece and three cats on a piano, fighting with each other? I cannot see any musical organization, because it's hidden in the composer's brain and never comes out. In spite of some interesting sound creations I think, the composer uses music to live out his complexity-fetish. In this piece complexity turns to fully randomness. However, this piece is good in some moments, because the orchestra helps with interesting sounds. But e.g. Finnissy's 4th piano concert is the pure musical pathology

@@andreassorg7294 If you spend more than a minute listening to this then yeah I could understand how this sounds like pure bs. But this is all intentionally made to be this way. The appeal of this music is to figure out all the intricate little details which give a piece its charm, atleast that's always how it's been for me, however people like it for lots of different reasons.
But even if it was literally just cats walking on piano, why would it matter?
The composer isn't selling this for millions of dollars like modern painters do, they only create this to express themselves, they don't ask for anyone to like it in any way. This is why I said what I did, if you don't like it, why spend time in your day criticising a piece of art?
