This masterpiece is most likely named after the character Erikthon from Lucan's Pharsalia, a necromancer who plays a very interesting part in Book VI for those interested. Xenakis captures perfectly her enigmatic and dangerous presence right before the battle starts. Truly incredible!♥

The music is nice, but the composer better have a reeeeeaaaally good reason for this way of notation. This is a threat.
It's a precise notation, it allow to place the neumes where they belong. It's not so different than Ligeti piano studies if you're familiar with that.

Very beautiful piece. First and last parts suffer from notation complexity addiction though - why does every contemporary piece have to be notated in a 60 bpm 4/4 ?
Yeah, I don't unserstand why those bits have a time signature at all. Just, like, write notes and rests?
@@klop4228 because it's easier for the performer to read.
@@timothyhoft It genuinely isn't. Grouping the rests somehow, sure, but why does having a little C in front of the first notes make it any easier to read when it serves no function? The music isn't really metrical, and the composer adds a time signature again when it becomes relevant. Hell, you don't even need a time signature to write barlines. Just do that. (The rests would need cleaning up too, that's the bigger issue)
@@klop4228If you would play in ensamble or orchestra you probably would know why time signature exist.
@@maciej9659 I've played in ensembles and orchestras regularly for over a decade. And for music for more than one musician, I agree (with a couple exceptional cases, of course). Hell, even in music for one musician, most of the time. But a single musician only needs to coordinate with themselves, and that doesn't require a time signature, just an understanding of how long each note value is - something every musician who's studied enough to play a piece like this knows.
