Great story. I honestly didnt like caroline. She added nothing except holding mc back. 100% of the time he talked with her, it was always about her. She just wanted the picture perfect life she had, it didnt matter who it was with. Also i just found the people of middletown to be ignorantly dumb, entitled, and cliche. Their behaviors just doesnt align with what would be expected if a case scenario like being transported to the future would happen. They reacted too emotionally and not with patience or common sense
I found it interesting to think that this was written in the 50s and probably reflects how they would have reacted. I agree re. Caroline, she added nothing
“…… the people of middletown to be ignorantly dumb, entitled and cliched” Sounds like the majority of people in every democrat led city in the US today. Concerning the story; As if humans today wouldn’t react the same way if little green men landed on earth. The religious nuts alone would be going off the deep end. Not too long ago, the Heaven’s Gate freaks offed themselves because of a comet. I think the author nailed the typical reactions of humans, especially the mayor who never forgets he’s a politician first. As far as Carol goes, she’s typical of a 1950’s woman. Even in modern apocalyptic books, women are still portrayed as self centered.

Why do these great narrations and stories have to be ruined by that constant drone of background tones that add NOTHING to the book. It's like a mosquito in a tent on a camping trip.

Oh my days I’ve never hated the humans in a story so much in my entire life please our lives are shit some one come help us we’re out of fuel in a random time on a planet that isn’t familiar to us anymore. there’s no one on the entire planet our sun is dying and our planets core is going cold.
The rescuers: OK we’re here to save you we will put you on a better planet one with a sun that isn’t dying and you can live there happily
The people that need rescuing: how very fucking dare you.
Like these doofuses just moved from their homes to go somewhere else in the dome and life got marginally better so why would they not be open to moving to another planet when it would likely be a 24 hour trip to get there or some shit and they would have a fresh new planet to do what humans do and destroy.
Kind of nonsensical to be angry at the people who answered your SOS came to save you from a dying planet. And made you comfortable while you wait to be taken to a new home. On a safe planet. Why would that anger you?!

This story reinforces for me why the government won't divulge what it knows about the UFO/UAP/Aliens subject. Some of us would be more than happy to meet and interact with other beings as long as they were friendly and to get off this rock and see what the rest of the universe has to offer. But way too many are still locked in their racism and small-minded bigotry.
