Me Too! Your Tapestry weaving is exquisite. You have a gift! I've been a Handweaver since the 1980's, but had a block of illness that took me away from it for about 10 years. Now I'm getting everything up and ready for weaving Tartans, Coverlets, Fabric, Rugs, but have become absolutely fascinated with weaving Tapestry, and am determined to do so. Would love to see a video of how you began in weaving Tapestry. Have you worked on other types of looms! And could you tell me the content of the fiber used in your weft? Maybe I just missed it...
I look forward to see more of your work!

Hello Anne, sorry for the delay. I am using a double half hitch knot for each dot of colour then moving to the next warp thread and repeating. I work from left to right building up each area and for this piece the weft bundle was 6 or 7 mixed embroidery threads. Hope that helps. Robb

    Hello Nancy,
thanks for the posting. Actually many tapestry weavers photograph, paint or otherwise create their own designs and use these as a 'cartoon' or design to follow in weaving their piece. Check out the many good books on tapestry weaving for design ideas. Cheers, Robb

Thanks Rob- you have given me inspiration to start my tapestry- which is a lot smaller than yours (1m by 60cm...but you explained a couple of terrific ideas, such as blending the colours somwwhat! Ill be doing ON THE WALLABY TRACK, by Fred McCubbin. Marietta, Brisbane

Is tapestry a weave (over under, over under, repeat) or is it knotting a thread (or cluster of thread) between two lengths of linen? If it is the knotting, I’m most interested in how you accomplish it. The only knot I can fathom is mostly akin to the Persian knot used in fine rug making.
I would dearly love to see you display how you are accomplishing your craft. The passion in which you speak of this is most involving and it makes the process so inviting to learn.

    Hi Deborah,
For the video piece I am using the half hitch knot - twice - that is a double half hitch knot on each warp and then moving to the next warp moving from left to right. As a left hander I found that easier then right to left. Hope that helps with your inquiry. Robb

The question regarding the weft bundles in use are 6 or 7 embroidery threads. Since completing this piece I knot now in both directions - from left to right and right to left. Hope that helps - Robb

Jason Link - Hello Jason - sorry that this has taken so long.... I don’t check this web posting often. To your posted question - I have a small frame loom finely warped and work the double half hitch knots from warp thread to warp thread ... on this video from left to right. You might want to view videos on weaving tapestry and that will give you some idea of how this is done. Later I learned to do these knots in both directions which works better and keep the whole piece square and not misshaped. I had to go to the library to get books on macrame, which teach how to do a double half hitch knot. If this is still to vague then you might look up the English tapestry artist Anne Jackson who also uses the double half hitch knotting technique in her work.

Very inspirational video, your enthusiasm is contagious. May I ask what type of "knot" you refer to in your weaving. I am only familiar with sumac, chain, and over-and-under weaving. Thank you. /Deb

What are your Ends Per Inch on your warp? I love doing detail work. I too will be working in textiles for the rest of my life. I have such a love for textiles! It makes every day a great journey in color and texture!

Far North Weaver To your question on epi. I did this piece back in 2010 but as I recall, I warped the frame to 12 or 14 ends per inch which is why the knot count is so high - 450 / sq inch. The weft bundle was 6 strands of embrodery thread - colours mixed. Many recent pieces I work at a warp of 8 or 10 ends per inch with a weft bundle equivalent to the thickness of 12 to 15 threads. What I later discovered was that you can do the half hitch knotting in both directions but back then I was only working from left to right which made the pieces a bit wonky in format. Check out the wonderful work of the English tapestry artist Anne Jackson, who also uses the half hitch knot in her work. Hope that addresses your question and many thanks for your interest. - Robb

Dwayne Manuel - - Hello Dwayne, sorry for the late reply. I rarely check my video posting so to your question. I did this piece back in 2010 as a first experimental piece exploring the half hitch knot. Most tapestry weaving is done in plain weave on a two harness loom. I was using a small wooden frame with even tensioned warp threads and with the half hitch knotting you do not need a shed or shedding device. To understand the half hitch knot you might check out books on macrame or the how to do on TH-cam. Let me know if you have any more questions . Robb
