What destroyed him for me was the assault of Casca. He just wanted to hurt Guts, which was deplorable, but he forced Casca to feel some pleasure from it when she tried so hard to numb herself from the attack. The horror and shame she felt and the utter guilt and uselessness Guts felt at not being able to save her from Griffith, was just absolutely heartbreaking . And he did this to the two people who were the absolute definition of “loyal” to him. Especially Casca. She was willing to forgo her happiness with Guts to make sure Griffith would be okay in his post-tortured state, but he still did that to her simply to say “fuck you” to Guts.
Went from loving Griffith to despising him so quickly.

Something I find interesting about Griffith as a villain is how much of who he is left to the audience to decide.
Is he a charming narcissist whose pretence of altruism is only skin deep, or an idealist capable of committing the most vile acts imaginable if it will grant him the power to create a better future?
Is it the pity of those who once looked up to him that finally initiates Griffith's breakdown? Or the idea that all the cruelty and bloodshed perpetrated in pursuit of his dream was ultimately for nothing?
With only a few tantalising glimpses into Griffith's psyche, the answer varies from person to person and is an interesting litmus test regarding means and ends - especially with how the depravity of the eclipse becomes increasingly juxtaposed with the utopian society he comes to build afterwards.

The crimes of thanos are so large in scale that i cant wrap my head around them, its like thinking about how big the universe is. While in comparison, the crimes of griffith are small enough in scale that it feels like it was me and my soul who just got violated (and i didnt like that one bit)

This is a really good video. However there is one thing I feel you have forgotten about which is Griffith rise and fall. The fact that he had everything he wanted at his fingertips but allowed it all to come crashing down do to self-destructive actions caused by emotional impulses.

Totally. I think I’ll probably do a Griffith character analysis instead of more an analysis on evil in storytelling later on. His night with the princess is really unreal. It’s crazy how when Guts left, Griffith lost all of his grounding to humanity and became a symbol to everyone else in his life with no connection. Almost like when Guts left, so did Griffith’s humanity. That night with the princess is so wild cause it’s almost like his body and actions are still in line with his dreams with the princess, but his mind and his heart are on Guts and his own lack of true connection.

Great vid. Griffith betraying his comrades, who would have still fought and died to protect him, and him scorning guts who he saw achieving his ideals it what solidifies the hate. It’s one thing to be evil, and kill indescrimently like Thanos. It’s different to be purposely kill your allies who you are betraying for your selfish goals.

If all of mankind were to be transported to the MCU, we would go to war against each other for the sake of Thanos's vision, either in accordance or rejection of it.
But if we were in Berserk, with the knowledge that we have? The absolute entirety of humanity would be zerg rushing Griffith screaming bloody murder.

Haven’t watched the anime yet but I hope I can still understand this video a little 😂
Okay, I‘ve watched it now and understood quite a lot.
Not really related to the points you make here but I adore villains that make you question if they really are in the wrong.
For example Makima in Chainsaw Man is one of the most famous female villains in anime but her intentions in the end are to create a „perfect“ world for mankind (usually considered to be a heroic act). She still is undoubtedly a villain and has done some heinous stuff throughout the story but she did make me pause for a second when I found out her intentions.
Griffith sounds to me like he is just plain evil and does not make the audience question that at all.

Griffith isnt universally plain evil. Well, that is if we arent looking at the standard morals a normal, adequate human has. Now if we did, however, disregard all basic morals and instead looked at him from a truly neutral standpoint, Griffith is definitely not 'just' evil. I mean hey, what is good and what is evil is entirely subjective, a stoic and a machiavellianist will both indubitably have different perceptions of such. In the end, its up to the viewer/reader to decide whether the guy's wicked evil or not

One thing I noticed is that many people who like and relate to guts and or casca hated Griffith even without that but only really FELT that hate because of said factor. But seeing how I hated Griffith even when I don’t really like guts or casca, that alone makes it clear that it’s not just that. Berserk is great in its execution of what it’s trying to be, that my hate for what it is trying to be directly appeared in what it became/portrayed. Side note, people forgetting Griffith before the eclipse is reducing, but that strong bias induced by understandable disgust and hatred for femto is not something I blame people for when putting it as the reason they hate Griffith wholly. In the first place, berserk was never meant to be a pretty rose, and there is no need to like something so well executed at being awful on purpose (‎and I hope the wording doesn’t give off the wrong idea). Really good work on breaking down the psychology behind it.

I very much disagree that Griffith is this horrible/evil person. Let's take a step back and look at how he was before losing everything and being brutally tortured for an entire year. Before that he was ambitious and yes was willing to get his hands dirty to achieve his goals. Similar to Erwin from AoT or Canute from Vinland Saga. Which is simply a necessary quality you need in a leader. And yet it pained him so much that he was willing to sell his own body, if needless bloodshed could be avoided. He multiple times was willing to sacrefice his life for Guts, without even thinking twice about it. This is Griffith's true character.
Then the loss of everything. His best friend (Guts) who meant even more to him than his dream at this point and he was tortured for a year. Becoming a cripple who can't even stand up or even speak. Even if he were to die, this would be the last image people would remember him by. Being tortured like that also takes an unbelievable psychological toll on him. Especially as he'd feel betrayed and isolated the entire time. I don't think it's that crazy he's willing to sacrefice everything at that point. Don't think there's many people who wouldn't at that point, especially with how ambitious he's always been. People should try put themselves in his shoes and really consider what he's been through. This is the lowest point of his life. Prior to the torture i'm pretty sure Griffith wouldn't have done it. Which is exactly why the God Hand waited for the right moment, when he's pretty much left with no choice.
Also similar to Erwin from AoT, if Griffith had quit then all the sacrefices till then would've been for nothing. Which was something that haunted him through the entire series. He wanted to give their deaths meaning. With the Casca situation. There was definitely a desire to "get his revenge" on Guts. Also becouse he's no longer a cripple, so this was his way of taking back control. This was definitely in the back of his mind before turning into Femto. Though a lot of it is also explained by him losing his humanity when becoming Femto. Only the evil within him is left at that point. Meaning it's no longer the same Griffith we knew before. So was it actually Griffith or was it Femto? I think it's a bit of both. It was Griffith's desire but Femto has no humanity/empathy left to prevent him from doing it.
With that all being said, context matters a lot when it comes to Griffith. A lot of people can turn evil when unfortunate things happen in their life. I don't think Griffith is evil as a person, he's showcased his willingness to die for Guts. Not many people would sacrefice themselves like that. He's a more noble/selfless person than most, which is why downfall hits so hard. To take a quote from the Joker. All it takes is one bad day.
