hi Colin, I'm so excited to find you. I learned Lao Jia Yi Lu from Chen Jia Gou (the original place of Chen Tai Chi) but almost forgot the moves due to lack of practice. I would love to resume my practices and esp to reconnect with passionate followers of Chen Tai Chi in Sydney.

What a great place to learn. I've been there. They train pretty hard! Come along to a class at Newtown. You can check out available classes here centerlifebalance.com/chen-style-taijiquan-and-push-hands/ note today is the last class for a coupe of weeks back end of April. Hope you can join. 🙏

@@CenterLifeBalance where did you learn your Taichi? I live in Castle Hill. I won't be able to join the class on work days. Do you open on weekend so I can at least pay a visit first😀

Thanks for the breakdown Colin. A few queries:
    1. Turn to left. Shift weight forward mainly into right leg. What's the general principle behind this? Is it a case of when I'm turning to the left, my weight shifts forward and into my right leg? I'm a bit confused as I'm not emptying my left leg, so not sure why the right leg is getting loaded. Or is the weight shift so I can turn left more? Something else?
    2. Turning back to the right. Weight mainly in left foot. At what point do I start shifting weight from right leg to left leg? This seems to naturally happen when my hands are moving closer to my centreline. And then when do I start pivoting the right foot? This seems to happen naturally for me once my hands are past centreline?
    3. Left foot stepping forward. Does left leg stay mostly empty until we start shifting weight forward? Or do we start shifting as soon as left foot goes down?
    Cheers,
    Week 1 Beginner

As we turn to the left the weight transfers more to the right leg. Knee comes forward naturally following the turning hips (following the centre/centre leads) . The general rule in taiji is turn left to move right, turn right to move left. Turn, move, turn, move, - sometimes we turn, turn, move, rarely do we turn, move, move. Not something you need to worry about as a beginner. Focus on the principles of relaxation and centre leads.
Turning back to the right as you lift the toes the foot automatically follows the turning centre line of the body.
How empty the left leg after you step forward? The ratio could be 60:40 or 70:30 : or 80:20 - depends on your level. If you are relaxed and the spine is upright, 60:40 is already quite difficult. After the flat of the foot is down, we turn, then move (shift weight) - when to turn and when to shift weight? After the turn is complete, then shift weight, after weight has shifted, then turn. Hope that serves you 🙏

@@CenterLifeBalance Thanks Colin. That general rule of turn left to move right and vice versa is really helpful. Previously when I self-learnt I just did what 'felt right' which really on reflection translated to what 'felt easy and comfortable'! =D
Ratio feels to me like 80:20 and this might be where the problem is. I'm less balanced and then go to about 60:40 (before turn is complete), then finish turning, then shift to 20:80. If I'm understanding you correctly, I shouldn't be shifting while still turning. I'll give that a go.
I guess this is a snippet of how useful hands on instruction can. It's much faster and effective.

As a Chinese, you are highly appreciated for propagating taiji. I guess you are practicing the from by grand master Chen Xiaowang. However, I believe there is one obvious issue with your movements. Taiji always requires to sink shoulders and elbows. Apparently your elbows (higher one whenever right or left) are too high. I could be wrong by the way.

Thanks your your feedback. I can’t argue with your observation. I still had a lot of tension in my body when I made these videos. Relaxation is an evolution. You may notice in the intro my left shoulder higher than my right. Due to an ankle injury and the overcompensation that occurred in the following weeks, the result was my body became very imbalanced. The issue was in the hip and lower back, but this manifested in multiple ways throughout the body, including higher should and thus higher elbow on the left side. Taiji training has helped correct this imbalance over the last couple of years. Thanks you for engaging with the community 🙏

Hi, at the end of technic You are correcting the foot position, but it looks that You are doing it when foot is loaded, i was learned that i can make corrects only on not loaded one, what do You think about ?

    • @CenterLifeBalance
      @CenterLifeBalance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You can turn the foot position even when loaded (you mean the weighted foot yes?) there are some moves in the form where we turn the whole body on the rooted foot, for example when we perform the tornado kick. It is a kick that involves spinning on one leg and finishes facing the opposite direction. Only possible if the foot is loaded otherwise you would be floating in the air.

Christine Schneider thank you for your comment. I’m delighted that you have committed to learning the form. I’m in the process of creating a course for the full form but it will not be ready for a couple of months. I will be releasing the next few movements in the coming weeks. For now you could have a look at the full form in this video th-cam.com/video/IsGfunNioLI/w-d-xo.html - if there is a movement you are struggling with please let me know by reference to the time the movement begins the above video and I will endeavour to make a video specifically for it. You will note some movements are repeated which makes learning easier. I hope this helps. 🙏

@@CenterLifeBalance Thank you Colin (?) Most helpful to see the flow of the movements. Several months is about what I need to learn and practice the first 10 forms. Looking forward to the next 65, should keep me going for about a decade :) Your commitment to the art and ability to share and teach it are appreciated, thank you.

Christine Schneider thank you for the kind words much appreciated. You’ll be surprised how quickly you will learn the rest after you learn the first section. Many of the moves are repeated. After more than a decade I am still uncovering new layers of depth in taiji. The Lao jia Yu lu form has everything one needs to develop mastery. Good luck with your practice and remember to shout out if you have any questions technical or otherwise. Many thanks for your contribution.
