  • Training a fearful reactive dog is something that professional dog trainer Tom Davis is an expert in. Tom works with a small dog and her owner on extreme leash reactivity. We also work with a German Shepherd and her owner on competitive obedience training.

I watch this and want to cry. My two reactive dogs weren’t so as young dogs till positive reinforcement trainers reenforced the behave cuz they did not believe in corrections (punishment) and allowed the behavior. Their reactivity is so ingrained, it is constant work to maintain progress. Thank you for balanced training with multiple techniques that I can watch over and over.

I hear you. I have spent the last 20 months rehabbing a dog marked as "potentially dangerous" by his vet and subsequently surrendered by his first owners. But his biting and lunging were inadvertently TAUGHT to him by a couple of novice owners who liked the idea of all positive reinforcement. Now he's perfectly handleable even by my 9 yo granddaughter. I hope you can straighten those two of yours out too.

Try to find a training club and bring one dog at a time to train around calmer dogs. It wont be so much work later when you bring them together, unless one thinks it needs to protect the other like mine. (crazy dog!)

We hired a privately trainer that uses multiple techniques. And have gone to an ecollar but years of bad behavior is so hard to break consistently. He is good in one situation and then 2 months later has issues. Just yesterday we were out and he started barking uncontrollably at another dog, ecollar failed (that’s another issue) and I was unable to make any immediate exit so it was a win for him. Will address all with trainer. I know I am the problem but I can’t recreate situation so trainer can tell me what I did wrong. Just so mad that we are in this situation and that I let people tell me I was bad person for wanting to use other options when he was only 50 Lb pup, now 90 Lb older dog. They created this problem and walked away.

Please do more of these! I loved the juxtaposition of the novice owner against the footage of the Rimiko and her dog. It showed how long the road is from one to another end of the training world. It moved me emotionally. Rimiko's face when you offered her a chance to work with your dog - I felt it! And when you talked about the difference between Luca and Lexi after Luca's training. "Gimmee, gimmee," versus waiting politely.

Many thanks and kudos to your videographer, incredible job cutting and editing. This definitely got saved for future viewings. Hats off to the GSD owner because she is so tiny with such a big, powerful dog, if she can do it, we can do it. My trainer told me to hold the ball in my armpit while heeling and to drop it (By just lifting my arm) as a reward, this has worked wonders for my GSD, he still watches me though, not the ball but he knows it's there. Wow I LOVED this video! To see you help the shepherd and how you even edited the video to show exactly when you pressed the remote for breaking the watch me command. Makes me hope more people training for competition come to you for help. This was so nice to watch as variety from the other videos.

Wow! I really really liked this video with the huge variety of cases interspersed with the behind the scenes vignettes! So much fun, and packed with great information! Well done!

I bought your e collar even though I was scared to death of it. It’s been so pivotal in helping my people reactive vizsla! I absolutely love when you show the little green dot so we know when you’re using the collar and releasing.

What a great video, definitely one of my favorites! The dogs in this one were just a joy to watch. I especially loved seeing you train Kyte and her enthusiastic owner, she's such a cool woman. It's so nice to watch someone improve their training skills!!

Beautiful! I truly hope we can get a trainer like you here in Hawaii that also doesn't cost an arm and a 🦵.

I love the style of this video it keeps me really interested the whole time. Could you maybe make a short on how to properly put on a slip leash? Thanks so much

That is a very valid request, how to put on a slip leash, and you’re right, there should be a short for that! The way I was taught was to look at the end of the leash where the slip is and see the letter P otherwise the loop does not release. Hope that helps and a great idea.

Another great video. I found Tom about a year ago. I have always adopted a dog and they have always had some sort of issue. I thought I was on top of my most recent adoption. A mini Aussie. Adopted as a puppy. He has turned fear aggressive. I have used Tom’s instructions as well as other trainers to help. I know it will be a lot of work moving forward. I would love to have Tom’s personal help. I’ll see you in Texas - No Bad Dogs team.

Thank you for doing the focused heel - when/where to reward, when to release, etc. Working towards my second CD title - first time 20 yrs ago with a Whippet, this time with my 100lb Doberman. Rally-O we started as well. Going to a Barn Hunt trial in 2 weeks too! (Happy Ratters is the city version of Barn Hunt too - no hay). Zeppelin has a high prey drive so trying instinct and Novice just to see. Also appreciate the reactive dogs meeting other dogs. So many sports people can aspire to including virtual, so love when the GSD owner mentions watching yourself. Getting yourself video taped can really help immensely. Stuff you do unconsciously is suddenly revealed when you watch it back. When you get furious, get curious - what is the owner not doing correctly that makes the dog provide that kind of feedback!?! Thank you again, Tom.
