Here I am in 2021, having just watched Carnival Row, and hearing your description of the world building elements made it all the more interesting! Although I feel like when certain characters mentioned “the desert people” and those “descended from pharaohs” they implied we’ll be seeing more Egyptian influence… IF Season 2 does indeed pull through. Fingers crossed!
Awesome review! And we could learn lots of tips from this. I hadn't heard about this show. I just saw the trailer, and the tone, looks and performances seems just perfect. A light in the dark, grey dystonia sort of feel to it...
I personally feel, as a fan of HEMA and Shadiversity, that the advantages the faeries have over humans would have given them the edge in any combat scenario. The pucks are stronger and more physically enduring, the faeries have the advantage of height and that means consistent combat superiority. I feel the humans would be the oppressed.
I think you're right, but it seems like the humans had technological superiority and, in the case of the Pact, some good old fashioned nastiness! Can't wait to see how they develop it, though!
In addition to technology the Pact also seemed to have numbers on their side. They were made out to be a powerful nation that even threatened the Berg.
I'd love to see more reviews in this vein! Especially as I'm always on the hunt for some epic fantasy shows and inspirations for worldbuilding and different approaches to it. :)
Didn't know that there was a Pan's Labyrinth connection. I already wanted to see this, but now it's definitely on my watch-list!

I personally love the show even with it's flaws. I totally agree with you though. You're very clear and concise btw. Looking forward to season two. Subscribed! 👍
It's an excellent show despite those negatives, and if you're into worldbuilding you can definitely learn a lot from how they've paced the exposition and the leaning curve! BIG RECOMMEND! :D ~Janet
3:54 most fantasy books I've checked out lately go for a pre napoleon post medieval vibe, About Prussia/ Frederic the great level of technology, has anyone else noticed that?
BTW you can always deliver more exposition in a video-montage than you can on the written page. Compare The Fellowship of the Ring (movie) with the book for instance.
Good review, thank you! You say too simplistic, and I say pushing the limit of too many characters/complexity- ha, ha! Everyone wants to make GoT. I thought the love story and the murder mystery were enough. Wasn't in need of dynastic families, foundling babies, secret crime organizations, etc. We both agree the show is excellent.
Wanted to give the show a chance... but the script seems so full of cliches and tropy scenes that it made me cringe a little. Does it get better after episode 1?
Nekoni I enjoyed it but, as others observed, the plot is a little weak. It’s a nice distraction and very pretty! I’d not call it perfect by any stretch of the imagination. I’m curious if they made a slower plot to give more space for worldbuilding, and if it’ll become better in season 2.
The whole fairy homeland genocide is pretty terrible to see. And then in the city (at least for the first few episodes) like every scene and every conversation is about anti-fairy xenophobia and mistreatment of fairies as "second-class citizens." Plus there's a fair amount of "fairies are irish" going on
6:50 it reminded me of victoria minus the idiotic level of I'm so important even thoue I do nothing part of that show, seriousely what is the impossible girl doing waisting her time there, One time the real victoria Dominoed hitler in to power, She wanted to preserve her husbands estate so she demanded one of her grandchildren take it, So it was suppose to be Arthur something but he bullied Charles Edward .. I think? to take it, then after the guy had 5 children WWI happened and he fought for Germany, but he refused to fight Brits, he was alianated both from england and at home where bulshevics protested him, he was really pissed off and with the decline of royal and noble power, .. Point is Hitler came knocking and he shook his hand making him the first German prince, noble ... to support him. Also theres some controversy of if he knew about Action 4 or not.
It is all worldbuilding and baffling story. The world looks great, true. But it is just set decoration. The world building makes no sense. It definitely feels like a constant info dump, but NOT in any coherent way. More like info dump to justify whatever the characters are doing. Why the hell would the baddie have a chop shop underneath her house like that? Or was it under the prison? How did she get any of those desiccated magic folk down there, over and over again, without anyone noticing? How did no one miss some of her victims, which look ridiculously large? The factions are arbitrary, the world is cliche, and everything seems to literally only exist in two places. A very, very small world for no reason.
There were some serious problems with the plot, but I wanted to focus on the worldbuilding in this video. I found it kinda slow, like the police thread was an afterthought in a fantasy romance drama...
@@WorldAnvil I do apologize if I was salty. Just a pet-peeve of mine when TH-cam presenters appear to present everything in terms of Dungeons & Dragons.

Can't wait to see what new worldbuilding season 2 has in store! 👀

As a fan of Magic the Gathering, I know faeries are overpowered.
Always great to see you guys! I will have to rewatch to appreciate it fully as came in late. But yes, you guys are great and I can't wait to see more!

I like any worldbuilding video with Janet in it.
Good job as first review. No spoilers but still left me wanting to watch it now.

There is a map and a lot more factions etc. Maybe they were not around at this time, but the wiki is good for deeper background etc.
Oooo, good to know - thank you!
Thanks for the rewiew.
You're welcome! I hope you enjoy the series if you decide to watch it! 🙌😄
If they only flashed to a map! Hadn't thought of that. It would have improved the show immensely.
“Cat was here” 😂

I’m just wondering but dose Worldanvil require a subscription?
Mr I Don’t exist There’s a free version that’s pretty extensive, and paid tiers which give even more!
Sounds interesting :) will have to watch.
Does the series alternate world in reality or fiction?
The series is an earth alternate universe based in fiction 😊

Carnival Row is unbelievably stupid. The worldbuilding is amazing but nothing happens at all. Boring as hell.

They are not Tieflings. Though I would not expect you to recognize the difference.
Lee Carlson this was a slip of the tongue, sorry! They are more Mr Tumnus than Tiefling for sure, but I was tired!
