  • Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne star in the Amazon Original series 'Carnival Row'. The series is a social commentary on politics, race and immigration. Is it worth the watch? Thanks for checking out my review.

    06:40 You nailed it.
    As someone who laughs with heavy handed attempts of injecting Politicaly correctness in movies and series. I found Carnival row perfect.
    It displays issues that are besicaly human nature, without being preachy or politicaly correct.
    And those issues are the backround not the focus of the story.
    All the ugliness and racism we see is the result of a power play game, between powerful people, just like in the real world.

      When they use laden language they are pounding you in the face with it, just most people have become dull to the narrative so you don't see it anymore.
      I have turned off almost all modern shows because they NEED to put politics in it, not just being political, but making it obvious they re referencing current events.
      If you didn't see it, you need glasses.

    Not everything works in the show. But when it does, it takes flight.Probably the most immersive steampunk fantasy on the screen.The Amazon series is easier to follow even as it introduces initially-unconnected characters in multiple social classes. This gives "Carnival Row" plenty of areas to explore. It seems the time is right for audiences to become invested in this magical world, even if it's a far darker and nastier place than they might have otherwise imagined. Season is coming . I just hope I do not have to wait a year and a half as is the trend for season two. Recommended viewing .

    There is also a series called Victorian Farm. Victorian Farm historical observational documentary series following a team who live the life of Victorian Farmers for a year. Wearing period clothes and using only the materials that would have been available in 1885, historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn are going back in time to re-live the day to day life of the Victorian farmer. The project is based on the Acton Scott estate in Shropshire; a world frozen in time, lost in Victorian rural England. Its buildings and grounds are cluttered with antique tools and machinery collected by the Acton family who have lived on the estate since the twelfth century. The team have resurrected this lost world and brought it back to life, as it would have been in the 1880s. This was a time that saw a revolution in British agriculture. But it also meant centuries-old crafts and skills were being lost to industrialized farming. It's a period that marks the crossroads between the old...and the new. Working for a full calendar year Ruth, Alex and Peter are rediscovering a lost world of skills, crafts and knowledge assisted by an ever-dwindling band of experts who keep Victorian rural practices alive. Each month and season will bring pressing priorities, from tending to livestock and repairing buildings to raising crops, preparing food and crafting furniture and tools. Can they make a success of farming the Victorian way? th-cam.com/video/4apIM4l0laY/w-d-xo.html

    Yeah, I just binge watched this. I wasn't expecting much, and therefore was pleasantly surprised. In fact I expected to hate it and was sure I'd only watch one or two episodes. It helped that it had Orlando Bloom leading, and all the superb acting he and everyone brought to the table caught my interest long enough to get caught up in the story. I agree the social commentary might have been a bit heavy handed, however I appreciate the writer's and producer's dedication to characterization and story above all else. I also appreciate the effort put into the special effects. It wasn't the best but wasn't the worst. In fact fairies in general, outside of cartoon animation, are usually poorly reflected in special effects on screen. They typically aren't well animated in flight in live action film and television. This was a pleasant surprise again in that respect.
    I think it could get even better. My expectations will be a bit higher for season 2 but not much. It's good but not something I'll be salivating over. Solid b series, points for being steampunk and fantasy. I'd give it a re-watch. I was really moved by the scope of the world building and the library scene. An avid reader myself the library stuck with me even if they mostly dropped it as a plot/characterization point. I also feel they should have just left out the lesbian interactions, it did add a bit to character and story, but they didn't address it very well and it ended up feeling a bit trite and a tad pandering tokenization. Better leave it out then add to stereotyping plots already done ad nauseam.

      My excitement level for season 2 is the same as yours. I'll watch, but won't clear my calendar for it. I hope it takes the story further and we get even more depth to the characters!

    I really like your review , I enjoyed it immensely and I think it’s on point:) Well, mosty;) You said it was a bummer we don’t know more about the Pact. I really hated what we’ve been shown about it. WWI-like scenes (only with faes and werewolves) were so CGI and weird I almost gave up on the show but now I’m glad I stayed onboard. With all its faults and naivete and predictability (at times), it is a lovely show and worth to watch.

    We've been watching this series and will finish the final two episodes tonight. I'm enjoying the story even though it was a little hard to understand what was going on during the first couple of episodes. By episode three they included flash backs to what had occurred leading up to the current time period. It is good to see Orlando Bloom as a character other than his "Pirates" character.

    You are right about not exploring what was going on with The Pact. To me it could have been one of the most interesting aspects. For instance why are they attempting genocide in killing all the "Fae". I will say they certainly seemed human, the uniforms and weaponry was certainly WW1 style and they kind of resemble Ottoman Empire troops to me. So far they never went into that and that seems to me a setup as to why the Fae and Pucks ended up in the Burgh ! The Political allegory to me was obvious from the get go..kind of clumsy at times. Thanks for your review.

    I really enjoyed this series. I didn’t think I would, but by the 3rd episode, I was completely hooked. Orlando Bloom.....am I the only one that thinks, now that he’s older, that he’s beginning to look like Hugh Jackman? I usually don’t like the political stuff worked into story lines, but this one made sense and didn’t seem overwhelming.

    Great review, 👏 I'm still trying to wrap my head around one certain aspect though. Perhaps people can help me with it.. So spoiler content below:
    It wasn't made clear to me anyway, if Jonah and Sophie were either full or half siblings? Was that the point of their story line or was it made obvious during a certain scene? Cause my memory is drawing a complete blank. 😅

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They share the same father but have different mothers. So they are half siblings, but that still doesn't stop Sophie from wanting to be intimate with Jonah even though she knows.

    • @SaoirseK
      @SaoirseK 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 No, if they were half siblings it would be through their mother not father as Piety gave birth to both Jonah and Sophie. Just determining if they are both full siblings through Ritter Longbane is the main question. 🤔

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SaoirseK Maybe I'm wrong, in that case I'd like to hear why you think Piety is the mother of both Sophie and Jonah.
      I think you're overlooking something. Sophie has dark skin, inherited from her mother who originates from the pharaonic coast. Her father (Ritter Longerbane) is white. Piety is also white.
      I don't recall Piety saying she had given birth to two children.
      Nowhere in the series is it hinted at or mentioned that Piety had a child before marrying Absalom Breakspear.
      Practically speaking, if she did how would she hide that from Absalom? And how common is it for two white parents to give birth to a mixed race child?
      Sophie's mother is said to have died shortly after giving birth to Sophie.
      Ritter Longerbane and Absalom Breakspear were both interested in marrying Piety, and in the end Piety decided to marry Absalom Breakspear.
      It's not mentioned afaik if she becomes pregnant with Jonah before or after she gets married to Absalom, but in the show it becomes clear that Jonah is actually the Ritter Longerbane's son and Piety pretended it was Absalom's son.
      So if she was pregnant with Jonah before the wedding she could't have been far along.
