  • Post the swearing-in of the new government at New Delhi, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh was the first to undertake a bilateral state visit to India. The event was not an unexpected one, given the fact that Bangladesh has been one of our most consistent neighbours, especially since Sheikh Hasina did come to power.
The range of issues addressed were both diverse and of import for the two countries, the region and the Indo-Pacific. There is adequate confluence in the approaches of the two countries on issues like the rules based order and approach to contentious aspects between countries in the region.
Issues of concern like water sharing, connectivity, SEZs near the borders, trade and commerce, free movement of people across the border were discussed. Trade through India with Nepal and Bhutan, power and energy collaboration and trading electricity regionally were some of the major areas of focus.
The Indian apprehension of Bangladesh-China relationship and its possible impact on India-Bangladesh relations perturbs Indian strategic thinkers. India is capable of substantially aiding the armed forces of Bangladesh in their modernization programs. There is a major role that the Indian defence industry, both private and government can play.
The other issue of concern is the gradual rise of extremism in Bangladesh. Of course, Sheikh Hasina's zero tolerance for terror and radicalism, has been able to keep inimical forces subdued so far.
