    The Adobe Creative Cloud will surprise you. Adobe's been working on this for a number of years now and I've become very comfortable using this in my workflow - especially for travel photography. Its quite surprising how many photographers and Adobe users don't understand how the whole Creative Cloud ecosystem actually works. So in this video I'll explain what it does and how I'm using it for travel and ultimately synching to my raid drive back in the studio. For me this whole system is a dream come true - its quite amazing.

    Thanks for the video Ted! I’ve recently subscribed to LRCC and am trying to use it in conjunction with LR Classic but I’ve found they don’t play well together. It can be really confusing as to where the full rez source image is located. I do want my full rez source images to remain in the cloud but found I have to be really careful because Classic wants to replace the full Rez cloud image with a smart preview. I’ve accidentally deleted full Rez images thinking I was only impacting a smart preview. I’ve reluctantly stopped using Classic because of this very confusing and dangerous situation. Do you know if it’s possible for Classic to leave full rez images in the cloud?

    Is there a workaround where I can edit on LR mobile on an ipad and save the raw with sidecar after without the need for uploading to the cloud? like can i do all my raw edits and save them (the raw files) off to an external (with the use of ipados)

    I'm not clear on where you're leaving the large RAW file originals. Are they staying on your iPad (not likely) or in the Adobe cloud which starts at a 20gb plan unless you pay more for their 1tb plan. Regardless of that, when you sync your photos from the Adobe cloud back to your LR Classic on your computer are you getting the original RAW file size or just the Smart Preview downloaded to LR Classic from the cloud? So what size file is getting backed up on your RAID system, a full RAW file or a Smart Preview? If it's the full RAW file then it's being saved in the Adobe Cloud AND at home?

    • @memkills
      @memkills 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      whatever you upload is what you download. so if you upload a RAW file, it downloads that RAW file on Classic under Collections folder called "From LR Mobile". You then can create another folder with the same name in your catalog on LR classic. and drag and drop those photos into it. This downloads the RAW files from the cloud, It's not an automatic process. once this is done, you can then delete the folder in "From LR Mobile" in collections. That deletes it from the cloud... If you want to take it one step further you can then take those RAW's and convert to smart previews and then create another folder in the collection and upload that. because the smart previews DON'T count towards your adobe storage space. Which is 100GB not 20GB for the base plan

    • @andreas.farsch
      @andreas.farsch 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@memkills Additionally, there is the other way: you load images up from LR Classic desktop. Here only the smart previews get into the cloud, never the original. This is the point that Adobe makes when they say that their cloud is not a backup system.
      Whereas with Adobe CC desktop (the 100% same software as the mobile version) you can sync and load the originals. Here it is an additional thing to choose if you want to save your images on your hard drive. Justin, my plan is 20GB, and this plan has been around for ages. It is now not visible any more, but can be ordered at Adobe support.

      @@GaryR55 Are you sure you won’t regret that at some point? Nowadays conventional hard drives are cheap. Not only is your RAW file the ultimate proof that you are the owner of that image. (Think of the naming of the DNG format: Digital Negative.) But also think of improvements in photo editing software in the last few years: Things like Dehaze (Tip: *negative* Dehaze), Structure, perspective correction with one click in Lightroom just didn’t exist. Perhaps I want to apply those things to older images.
      Also, styles and personal preferences change. Today I have a totally different “Look” preference than four years ago when I was just learning all this editing stuff. On my way I developed LR Presets with this Look, so all I need to do with my “old style” images is one click to apply one of my presets. All the “hard” stuff like perspective correction, aligning the horizon, cloning out blemishes etc. are already done and won’t get affected with my presets. Without the original RAW file, I would be lost…
      I think just the opposite of what your statement “keeping RAW files is … a sign that the photographer has no confidence in his own work” implies: I am open to new ideas or influences that will eventually change how I might initially have edited an image. I want to evolve and develop, and that can mean to diverge from my original approach.

    • @memkills
      @memkills 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GaryR55 I go back and re-edit photos for stock. and I'm a bit behind on it. but for me, my editing and styles change a lot. and deleting old stuff would never work because you never know that one shot you thought was terrible could actually be gold with a new always changing always learning mindset. the moment you stop learning or think you know it all is the moment you're behind

    • @memkills
      @memkills 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andreas.farsch yea totally. I mentioned this in another comment above. I prefer to have classic create the smart previews first. and I REALLY wish CC could implement this somehow. because even though I have a decently light laptop, I wish I could go even smaller with a tablet and be able to just move the RAW's around. no internet required. or atleast be uploading smart previews instead of RAW's.

    One question on your final step. I have a similar flow, use CC sometimes while mobile but my source of truth is Classic (I also learned to edit there and haven’t wanted to change). Whenever I sync from Classic to the cloud, I ONLY get smart previews available. I’ve found that I can sync to the cloud from Classic, then import the same photo into CC, and it will replace what I had with the full quality, complete with my edits from Classic. Is there a better or any way to get full quality synced to the cloud from Classic? It feels like I’m just missing something. Thanks!

    Ted, when you sync from LR classic, are you just syncing the smart previews, or do you sync full size from CC on the desktop? I'd love to switch to CC for basic editing and catalog management, and use PS for more detailed edits but right now CC doesn't support stacks, color labels or keywords from classic, and the Photoshop still hasn't arrived on iPad yet...
    But moreover, even if I was syncing full files, getting RAW or at least uncompressed TIFF files out of LR on an iPad (for editing outside of the Adobe ecosystem) looks like it's impossible. Do you have workarounds for this or just stick with the adobe system?

  • @AndrejSpilevoj
    @AndrejSpilevoj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question, correct me if I am wrong: when I upload 4000 images to my iPad LR directly, LR copies the files locally and uploads them slowly to the Cloud. So I can start editing or culling right away, while the raw files are getting to the Cloud on the background. Is that correct, that LR CC copies the RAW files locally to some temp folder, uploads them to the cloud and deletes them from my iPad leaving me with the previews only. Right? So that means your iPad will only save previews, which means it will save a lot of space on the local drive. Correct me if I am wrong.

    firstly thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and experience, I have knowledge albeit basic with Lightroom desktop and Lightroom mobile. I’ve listened to you here, and it has in my brain allowed me to sort things out which I was slightly unsure of and confused with the Adobe cloud Lightroom.. So, from what you said if I import directly from a memory card into an iPod which are then set up to sync into the cloud, my original raw image will be sent to the cloud - yes?
    so, back to the iPod I can then edit that image, and once I’m back home to my desktop MacBook Pro a Lightroom the editing will show on the original photograph. But it is not in folders in Lightroom but in the cloud-based set up on the left of white room under folders: is there a way to then add them to desktop light room for those above which will then be added to my backups on my desktop. Not sure if it’s clear questioning on my behalf, apologies if it’s confusing.
    So important to iPad Folder which is then synced to the cloud which is then available on desktop, So are these the originals or are they small in size. What happens then I want to print from one of these images on my desktop, will they then be back to full size for printing, and or Will then become full size if I export to my desktop Will do then be exported in fuel in JPEG format

    This would be great if it worked for me. However, I find my Lightroom Classic extremely lethargic in downloading the images (that have been captured on the phone) from the cloud... let's say multiple restarts over 24 hours just to get 100 images. It doesn't "just work" .. never has .. and i've got zero confidence in it at this point in time. I should add that I'm in Australia and have battled this issue trying various internet connections. Guess now I'm frustrated and it beat me.

    I like the possibilities with LRCC for the future, not yet! I am hopeful that the new iPad OS coming with a native MAC OS file system that things will work better. I am ready to buy a new iPad Pro with USBC and leave my MacBook Pro at home when traveling. I also hope Adobe connects LRCC with LR classic Catalog directly. Finally, Adobe needs to add more storage without raising the subscription price if they want to pull us classic users over to LRCC. Repeat: 1. LRCC directly syncs with my local catalog 2. Cloud storage gets a lot cheaper, 3. iPad/iPhone works directly with LR and not through the camera roll. Thanks for the video.

    SMART PREVIEWS DON'T COUNT TOWARD YOUR ADOBE STORAGE SPACE!! so that 100gb doesn't get touched. It only creates a little more storage on your computer with lightroom classic. It's a checkmark on the import screen on classic. So my workflow is the same as yours. except for when I download the RAW files from CC after my trip, I then go and convert to smart previews and then re-upload those as collections. This way I do have every photo I've ever taken, about 8TB, available to edit from anywhere and I still get that 100gb for temporary space for trips. ALSO it's good to mention that Amazon Drive has unlimited photo storage for FREE as long as you have an amazon prime account. INCLUDING RAW files!!

    Why not just cut out the middle man and use VPN to transfer files to your home server/NAS/RAID array like on a LAN. It's quite easy to setup and you're using the same bandwith as with the Adobe cloud - unless you have a crappy home connection.
    My workflow is that I transfer files to my laptop for edits, backup everything over VPN to my home server, backup my catalogue to OneDrive (this is done automatically or could be done to the home server as well), then when I come home I just import the backed up laptop catalogue into my desktop catalogue and point the first missing file/folder to the server location and I'm done.
    I usually delete the RAW files from my laptop after every shoot once they are transferred to the home server RAID array.
    This way I always have a backup of my files and catalogue and I can access my images from any device, edit them and export. The main problem with these setups (the Adobe cloud one as well) is the slow internet and large RAW files - my home broadband can do 500/100 mbps, so it is basically old LAN speed, but not many mobile connection or public/hotel WiFi can max that out, so there's that.

  • @paulbarnard5267
    @paulbarnard5267 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So how are you going to deal with accessing your edits if you stop paying the subscription? Do a killer edit on an image then without using adobe change the edit. As an example think about removing a vignette you added to an image if they go out of fashion. This is my problem with the subscription model, it’s not the cost, it’s the long term ability to go back and adjust edits made to an image. If you have a perpetual license you can always access the SW, even if it means running a VM with an old OS version to be able to run the SW. The alternative is to completely re-edit your images. I know from experience that it can be very difficult to reproduce something exactly even starting from the same RAW.

About Adobe and LR, I purchased an old version of LR 5 back when they sale it and not rent it and I think it is an astronomical tool but nowadays it is only good for people in certain countries with a good economy, and have saying that I think there is a lots of very creative humans around this planet who don't have a chance to pay for it. Not too long ago I starting use Affinity and it is Extraordinary...
    I understand Adobe is products are of great value and they need to pay their bills but lucky we have cheaper option now!!!
    Thanks for your help

    Thanks for sharing, Ted. For me, personally, I tried a similar workflow and just never felt that good about it. All the little steps and the fact that even on a brand new MacBook Pro Lightroom still feels a bit crappy. My solution was to get Capture One Pro and a 1 TB Samsung T5 SSD. After a day of shooting, photos get imported to Capture One and backed up to the SSD (which is then backed up to Backblaze when my MacBook is online). I also have Amazon Photos running on my MacBook and when that SSD is attached it backs everything up there as well, including the RAW files. It works for me but your mileage may vary, of course.

    Hi, Your video is great and very interesting. I still need HELP. I am retired and travel extensively, take many pictures everywhere, always in RAW, edit in Lightroom, if iPad I go to Lightroom mobile, if in MacBook Air, in Classic, both devices stay in my RV. Everything syncs fine in Adobe cloud. Then I am back home I work with my powerful MacMini and large hard drives where all my data resides. Question: What to do with my original RAW pictures (which I transfer/back-up from my camera to a portable SSD hard drive)? Adobe Cloud syncs only small images, not the large original file from my 24MP camera. If you have done a video explaining this, please give me the link; if not, could you be so kind to HELP!!!! I have not found anything in TH-cam.

    Great video ted. I’ve left Lightroom now I’ve jumped to capture one and using an external hard drive to work off but while on the road I use affinity photo with my iPad Pro now thank you IOS 13 for letting us connect external drives.

    Although I've had reasonable success with something quite similar to the way you use Lightroom CC, Ted, I've found that the sync between Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic is awful and not reliable. Sometimes nothing comes across, sometimes multiple copies of images come across. So although I see a use for both, I rely on manual downloads and transfers to move materials from CC to Classic and back. It's a pain in the butt. I like the premise of Lightroom CC as my mobile option, but Adobe should either keep it fully separate or make the transfer bulletproof.

    i wanted to use my LR classic to sync items up for edit on the go, maybe on the phone or to have them available anywhere (usually stored on my NAS).
    thing is, if you don't use folders, meaning i only use my regular file system (where all the RAWs live), as well as the quick collection - because it is easy to use and select like this. otherwise i would have to move/drag+drop every single image to a folder, since you cannot sync the quick collection, which i think is a huge missed opportunity for workflow.
    on the other hand, the "new" LR CC is not worth to use on desktop, since it only gives US-style keyboard shortcuts, of which some are not even accessible at all on eg DE-keyboard layouts, and no option to customize them. quite the disappointment to me from such a huge and "respected" software firm...

    Excellent overall but your use of the word "Folders" when you are referring to "Collections" is unfortunate and may confuse some people.

    • @ickledotco
      @ickledotco 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roger’s right. That jarred with me too. Otherwise a good explanation. Thinking of a beginner, perhaps you don’t stress enough where the real images are stored and how they get there. I do something similar to you though i only have on phone and iPad. The new OS is going to make all this even easier as the original images will be able to be transferred to a drive via the iPad on the move.

    Thanks Ted, incredibly useful video as I find Lr so confusing...buuuuuut one question: what does the Lr CC widget in your diagram represent? It’s not the cloud, as that’s represented by a cloud. It’s not your laptop, as that’s represented by the Lr Classic widget. And it’s not the web interface, as you have that covered too. So I’m still left asking what on earth Lr CC actually IS.

Really love your work and also appreciate the time and input you take and give to those wonderful photo books folks send you...though I must say this explanation does not strike a chord with me personally. It's almost like I thought I knew how I use the Cloud and CC and my iPad and iMac but after listening/watching this somehow I know...less or am just confused without reason hehe sorry!

    All in on LR CC for me. No classic anymore. I have my whole library in the cloud. Can edit on any computer or device anywhere in the world with internet.
    I load photos into the iPad Pro, let them transfer to the cloud (same as you) but keep them and everything there. 5tb plan at the moment.
    I’m okay to pay each month, but I think adobes storage prices are too high and am hopefully they’ll come down in time (or provide more storage for the same price)

    I was so disappointed when I found that all pictures in lr cc has to be uploaded via the photo folder on my iPad, i.e. the photos are stored twice.... I think the latest version of IOS solves the problem, but I never got past that point...

  • @angusgibbins4954

    What's also cool is by default LR Classic only syncs Smart Previews up to the cloud which keeps the amount of space used in the cloud ridiculously low.

    I definitely have a love/hate with Adobe.
    Performance of LR classic is still sub-par, even on my 2018 MacBook Pro or my desktop machine.
    I still have issues with my profiles not syncing to LR cc that I have on LR classic.
    Looking for an alternatives, need cataloging and some basic editing.

  • @palpytine
    @palpytine 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So a few gotchas here...
    - classic will only push smart previews, not the full image. If you want that, you need to upload a second time via CC (it'll recognise it as a duplicate)
    - the folder hierarchy is flattened when pushing from classic
    - the two apps don't coordinate. You'll end up with two copies of any synced image. Once in classic and again in the cc cache
    - you can only have one catalogue linked to the cloud. So if you want to run classic on two computers you have to deal with the age old problem of sharing a catalogue that was NEVER designed to be shared like that
    - I haven't found a way to downgrade an image in the cloud from full to smart preview once synced in classic... short of deleting and re-uploading
    - if you want a workflow that uses amazon prime photos (unlimited, stores raw files) for full images and only smart preview in CC, then you're in for a world of pain and bespoke hacks... and you're limited to upload via classic from that single li ked catalogue on the one computer

    Ted - great video but 1 correction, you called it Folders when you meant to say "Collections" which are virtual folders. Folders are the actual Explorer folders that reside on your physical HDDs. Collections can allow for any image from any folder or multiple folders to be collected together, so you might have the same 1 image of a red flower in a collection for flowers, and red images and california (if it was taken there) and travel etc etc. just wanted the viewers not to get confused. You MUST use collections to sync to the cloud and NOT folders.

    I use Lightroom Mobile a lot when covering sporting events. I can upload an image or group of images to me phone, run them through Lightroom and get good quality image up on Twitter in almost real time when covering a game. It is a significant advantage to have quality images in sports tweets. But I do not store photos on Creative Cloud. I use Amazon Drive for access to my photo catalogue. I have ALL my photos up there in folders by year and date and photos by project or theme or client or whatever. Oh, and Amazon Drive is free for storing photos with no limit on space. Most pro guys I know use it as a back up like me. It’s like having the backup in one’s pocket. I was with my son’s college roommate. Turns out he played football on a state championship team that I covered. On the spot, I search the Drive and gave him some photos of him intercepting a pass. I love Amazon Drive.

    Ever since Adobe started running the "infinite payment" scam, I started looking for other software. I think Adobe's products are great, but I hate their belief they can shove down customers' throat whatever they like. I'm sure they don't care, but since 2018 I use other software for both photography and video edit. And miraculously, I'm still alive.

    I appreciate the tutorial ... But, "astronomically expensive" is the operative factor when Adobe is involved. It is faster, cheaper, easier (perhaps even more secure) to carry an external SSD with me when I travel. If I think I will need access to photo library materials, I can load the external drive. The external drive option also allows me to utilize non-Adobe platforms, such as DXO and On1, directly w/o having to first render the file via LR. The cloud option may be preferred if traveling in some sort of dodgy corner of the planet where an external drive is at risk of being stolen/confiscated/damaged. But, personally, I avoid dodgy corners of the planet.

    Once I heard they were increasing the price while removing some things we’ve had, I let my subscription expire. Found an alternative that has the majority of features I used for a fraction of the price, and at a one time payment. No subscription. Wont be returning to Adobe anytime soon.

    I subscribe to your channel but my God! Is this what I have to know in order to make a few decent images for a paying client these days?! I did aviation photography in large format back when digital was still garbage and there was no "cloud" or iPhone or photo "app". I can locate any image I've taken since 1972 in a filing cabinet from the negs or slides, just by plunging my hand down about where I think they are, and then moving back or forth a few sleeves. If I hadn't found lightroom a few years ago I would have returned to film for no other reason than the cataloging functionality but I feel like all the additional "features" are creating their own all-encompassing universe and I must spend the time I should be refining my lighting or composition skills on software "features". God I pine for simpler days when I lost myself in the art rather than the "app"..

    In theory the Lightroom CC program is great but the key comment here is "you need access to Wi-Fi". I tried it a few times while traveling and found the impossibly slow upload speeds in hotels etc. too restrictive. Who has the time or inclination to spend all night trying to upload images off their SD card to the cloud.

    1)Rawtherapee and Darktable are awesome Lightroom alternatives
    2)GIMP with Gmic and Inkscape would give PS a run for his money

    Personally, I think it is too complicated. As a second objection, I do not like to rely on the internet, especially for large files. It may be different in the US, but sometimes I spend weeks (even months) at a time with minimal internet - for example in rural areas.
