- Edith Head shows her amazing gowns worn by some of the most beautiful women in Hollywood and clothes that you can make at home with her patterns.
Edith Head was an American costume designer who won a record eight Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, starting with The Heiress (1949) and ending with The Sting (1973).She first acquired notability for Dorothy Lamour’s trademark sarong dress.
She was the favorite designer to Ginger Rogers, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Shirley MacLaine, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Loretta Young, Elizabeth Taylor and many more. - บันเทิง

You were completely unprepared. You had no knowledge of her or her work, this was an opportunity to showcase a legend and you prattle on like a school girl. Didn’t you understand you had a job to do, and you should be a professional? Did you have any training? She held her temper, you both were completely insulting and a waste of her time.

Glad to see you in the comments! I love these vintage talk show clips..back when there was less flash and effects and more engaging with the guests. I thought you were the epitome of late 70s media glamour and loved your eye contact. Wish the clipboard wasn't there but production wasn't as sophisticated then! The comment below about you not treating the subject matter justly is unfair. This wasn't some academic lecture...but an intro to Edith and her local appearance, geared toward housewives probably!

@@jeanniefenton5341 yes, Ms. Head is a legend, but it does not flatter Ms. Head to demonstrate her annoyance to the point of haughtiness at times. And I do not think Ms. Prose interviewed like a schoolgirl- remember this was an interview to appeal to home audiences and everyday people, not to appeal to costume designers/students/historians.
EDITH HEAD was a genius of Fashion. Her work is extraordinary. She is such a unique character , always so to the point, seemingly rigid at times in her personality. There's no doubt of her contribution in Film & Fashion.

I had to go back & research & found that sadly, she died a year after this was recorded.
I was sad & also shocked that she must've been 82 years old in this video. She seemed at least 20 years younger!

B Wayland and you are an expert on the history of costume and fashion, because???? The word genius is so easily used these days for anybody who is famous. Head was a working costume designer who created appropriate costumes for the films she worked in. She was NOT however, a "genius." Balenciaga, Chanel, Rei Kawakubo, Charles James, Adrian were/are all geniuses within that medium. Edith Head was adequate. There were many far better costume designers if you understand the history of either fashion design and/or costume and Cinéma. You sheeple on You Tube have no idea, seriously!

I met her at a fashion show at Neiman Marcus in Houston back in the 1970’s. Got her autograph on a Vogue Pattern that she designed. She was very friendly.
Grace Kelly had "a superb chassis." 😂😂😂 Ms Edith has such a wonderfully eccentric and esoteric personality. I love me some wickedly dry humor, and she certainly has that in spades. I wish she was my friend!
I admire the fact that Edith told her hosts that she's NOT a designer, but rather a costumer. Everyone has mistakenly always called her a designer.

I swear, I was certain that Debbie Reynolds had a huge portion of them in her collection before it was sold off and dispersed... greatest tragedy of Hollywoods historic property in our time! They should have been placed in a showcase for all to see. If have paid good money to fly there international just to lay my eyes on such art and history...
There's considerable information and examples of her work waiting to be researched. Studios maintained their hold on many examples of her work in the cinema

Edith was a Queen of Glamour, She gave class to the movie stars that wore her Iconic creations.
Shes wearing the necklace she left to Elizabeth Taylor and was sold for $314,000 at Taylor's estate sale.

@@stmichl9433 At least two of the quotes mentioned here are actually very practical advice, like them or not, but they are (hide it and the tight/loose). It is not right to say these 'mean nothing'. What one's definition of a lady is may vary, but that doesn't take away from the fact that has a meaning.

When I was in grade school, we went on a field trip to one of the studios. On our tour of the studio, we saw Edith Head. She was so gracious and kind, she came over to our tram and spoke to us kids! I asked her what it was like to dress Paul Newman! I have no idea what made me ask that question I was just a kid! Lol! She said it was fabulous!

Unfortunately the show's director usually instructs to do this. And you're right..why would Edith or anyone bad mouth a celeb unless they had a hate on for them didn't care. Currently every American interviewer wants juicy tidbits and what they do get from guest is usually fake for shock value only. I can't believe the rumours created years ago by Hollywood tabloid writers that are included as fact in golden age celeb bio's...even when refuted in person in interviews decades ago.

Some of the"file folders" in my brain are encountering "404 errors" when I try to access them and need to be restored or replaced but I'd love to exchange any info you care to come up with with any of the strange collection of info in my head....Lots of info on science fiction and crafting, among other things.....lolol

Elizabeth Taylor wore it often. It was made of ivory and gold and was opera tokens from various famous British theatres. It’s stunning.

I was honored at age 20 to be a makeup artist for Edith's last fashion show.Unfortunately she passed away during the show and we were never able to meet her. We put out a call for look and found many but they were all too big for the tiny gowns so we hired models and transformed them into the Stars. What an honor.
What a cool person Edith was. She was 83 here! Still on top of her game, amazing.

Women with big bum hips should never wear something long as it accentuates the width. Instead wear at the waist jackets et al. Also big chested women should not wear wide belts(Melania Trump) gives appearance of no waist.

@@stmichl9433 her clothes withstand the test of time. It is not easy to design classical clothes that look good even to this day. And anyone can wear these outfits if tailored to the person's dimensions. My mom sews, and she measured to size. One way of lifting your spirits, dress up one day. Even if you're going to the store.

I love her. She is down to earth, honest, and sweet. Her first comment, "Why don't you mention the men?" She did not want to leave them out, just because she designed dresses, didn't mean she was sexist.
She loved designing for men just as much as women, but the men's clothes are rarely talked about.
The way she takes the belt off and put in on again so fast left me in awe

What a brilliant and talented lady who knew her craft. Absolutely shocked at some of the nasty comments being made . She was neither rude or condescending . I think people are so jealous . Of course she needed help in her job just like Disney . Part of your job is to delegate .
I always looked for her name in movie credits. Always the costumes were beautiful. I miss pretty clothes in movies.

I love how to the point Edith is. "Designing is really a fashion arithmetic. There are certain rules you follow that will make you fatter or thinner". Today's influencers love ignoring the rules and encourage the public and we see the results. Listen to this legendary designer, she's were to help you create the best things for you.
I'm sure Edith would be horrified what is called fashion today. We haven't had any real brilliant fashion trends in 3 decades. When watching a movie since 2000 hard to know what year it was made. In 1930's-1980's just had to look at what they were wearing could almost determine exact year esp '50's-early 70's.
Yes rules are sometimes too restricting but the "everybody can look good in everything as long as they feel good in it" is pure BS. Some things are just universally more flattering to the eye and you can find it adored in every culture in different periods for a reason.

Nothing like watching a Western movie that was set in the 1880s, made in the sixties, and the women had 60s hairstyles and makeup.

Ms. Head spoke of style, which is a mental and visual art form. We also are gripped by the “body positive” Nazi-ism where wearing unflattering clothes and not dressing one’s age is all too common.
The studio system represented class. Edith Head at Paramount, Charles LeMaie and Billy Travilla at 20th, Jean Louis at Columbia, Helen Rose and Adrian at MGM. They and others such as Irene, and Renie Conley made movie stars look great.
Would you know, is there a documentary about these people?
Glad she made it to age 80 for a lot of them died young. Very stressful job producing clothes for motions pictures, esp. back in the days of serious glamour!
I love how interested she is in the small details, and they have no problem letting her go on about them.
How funny and also very strange that she predicts that fashion will become part of the key to success in the 1980’s and how right she ended up being. Status, style, and displayals of wealth characterized the yuppie generation very much. She was on the money with that one.
She had a challenge with Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard, conscious of the fact that Swanson was 50 at the time and had a bit of a belly (Edith Head's opinion, not mine), she wanted to accentuate her best parts. She was absolutely fabulous!!!
Style is what you make it, but confidence carries it off.
About her manner of speaking - she is straight forward/direct in her responses, a trademark of people who know their stuff. It can come across as rude, but it isn't.
Baby Bunny I really respect people like this. They are blunt but honest. I’d rather have these kind of people around me instead of the ones who smile and then turn around and stab you in the back, or who aren’t genuine at all. Unfortunately my in-laws are in the second group.

Edith Head was "da bomb!"(magnificent)! I started watching film credits to see who the costumer was listed. Her work STILL stands up today. Great interview by you and your co-host Ms. Eileen! Just wonderful seeing her with her trademark hairstyle and glasses. Those dresses for "A Place in the Sun" and ALL of 1957 version of "The Ten Commandments" still look great. Yul Brunner in that taupe fitted t-shirt and brown leather pleated skirt in gold three inch high heels is still hot! And that navy matte jersey draped gown with the red sash of the Queen when her son died moves so fluidly, I can see it in my mind's eye right now. Ms. Head had NO equal. I was anticipating disliking her, but find that she is very impressive. I now want to do more research on her and discover more about her and her work!
Times have really changed. She was a professionals professional in her work and that can sometimes make her appear 'tight' and somewhat impersonal. Specialist used to appear this way in many trades back then. Now everyone is expected to 'shine / sparkle' in front of the camera.
I know just from her appearance for 50 years or more I've always thought she was an oddball. But actually she isn't at all. She was pleasant and serious and her stories were fascinating
I thought the interviewers did wonderfully. They were gentle and relaxed, but that let Edith take centre stage and really be herself. It was a clever way of getting someone who is very brief and to the point, to open up. How lovely to see Edith after seeing her name on credits so many times!

She’s a prickly interviewee, but the interviewer is quite accomplished, well prepared and makes it an interesting engagement.

Always loved this Lady, She did most costumes for a lot of John Wayne Movies, as well as many others.
The progenitor of style, fashion and a bona fide genius of every aspect of attire. She is the example of how one becomes the best. You should see her work for Shirley MacLaine in the movie "What a Way to Go". It is a fashion show of the elite. BTW, Hedy Lamar was also a scientific genius who was instrumental in creating technology that was useful in WWII.

Younger people, maybe. Pretty much every older person. whether they cared about clothes or not, knew who she was. She was famous!

I started to really look at the men after I learnt how much she liked dressing them. Everything from the tie, shoes and the socks always match. She really did an amazing job with dressing men. Watch White Christmas to see a perfect example of her work.

These interviewers were unfortunately nowhere near being in the same league as Edith- She seems a little annoyed by their questions or lack of informative questions. I love hearing what she has to say, but they may have wasted a huge opportunity to really hear something amazing.
Why are you defending her? She was egoic and rude and has no right to be.
I also thought this seemed like a wasted opportunity. Edith could have really given so much thought and information but was constantly being interrupted with questions about the temperament of actresses and how to look slim.
There's so much research that goes into designing costumes. You have to know your history, art, theatre, psychology, film, fashion, fabric, and the practicalities of sourcing materials. That's before even having to communicate that with a team of wardrobe assistants. It's not professional to gossip about who you've dressed. Everything must be handled with respect.
Serenity Fire I too. I think the lady interviewed her badly. The man tried to make up for her, but she didn’t like it. Edith would have done dozens of these during the tour. She had to take the bad with the good.

I'll never forget when Donny & Marie Osmond had their talk show...Marie asking Jean Stapleton to say 'Archie'! in the high Edith voice. Jean looked at her point blank and said NO! The look on Marie's face was priceless..she did not know what to say next looked like she had been slapped in the face. She realized she had messed up big time and went directly to a commercial. Why she thought Jean was such a low level star that she had to do that is beyond logical thinking. All talk show hosts want to make a name for themselves by getting someone to dump dirt shock statement or F-bomb on live tv.. hoping to get into media next day.

Hmmm,after she took the credit for designs that Givenchy actually designed I saw her differently.The film starred Audrey Hepburn and when she found out ,she made sure Givenchy ALWAYS he had a visible credit in the titles and that bonded her& Givenchy for life ..

My father and Her lived together for about two years. She followed the father to California. She became best friends with my fathers sister and came to my fathers funeral in Pittsburgh

She expected them to know about her before she was asked clueless questions. And she questioned his desire to look like Robert Redford because there wasn't anything wrong with him. She was a thinker.

I recommend Edith's autobiography. It has personal notes from her diaries and lots of pictures. What a career.
