This is an excellent presentation by Dr. Zamanzadeh concerning the corrosion risk assessment of aging high-rise structures in coastal environments, which is undoubtedly a serious issue not only in the United States, but worldwide.
Great presentation. To avoid catastrophic failures of aged structures, condition assessment and corrosion risk assessment should be planned as a proactive measure.
The experts here are part of the corrosion prevention/repair industry. This video, although it addresses the role of corrosion, it does not speak about the intrinsic failure of the building’s structure. That reason being the lack of beams to support between weight bearing columns. This failure is difficult to accommodate under ignorance or misfeasance, but rather it fits malfeasance, or intentionally cutting corners on the engineering.
The building was in service for decades. We need to consider time limiting failure mechanisms in addition to load calculations for aging structures: corrosion and fatigue.
Absolutely agree. This seams to be a very unpopular understanding right now because all the "engineering" youtube channels are saying the reason is because of a pool and plantar boxes or salt water getting into the garage. These things seem like it would cause MAJOR collapses over weeks or days at the fastest, but not under 10 SECONDS. BTW I have no engineering knowledge whatsoever.
The entire situation is just so unfortunate.... I don't believe there was just one "smoking gun" that brought that building down, but a series of smaller ones that culminated to cause it.
I would like to hear more of this injection repair he talked about. It's possible that the residents may have spent millions on repairs that would have been futile .
For such collapses to never happen again, such high-rises in the Miami area should never be built again. The land is not stable enough as it is primarily sand. The land is simply not meant for so many people to live upon regardless of the corrosion issues of the buildings.
Nonsense. The building collapse almost certainly had nothing to do with subsidence, but rather with pool deck and then column failure due to materials failure.

NIST, National Institute of Standards and Technology, has an ethical and professional obligation to include all of the necessary forensic professionals, including corrosion engineers, not only in the failure analysis investigation of the Surfside condo collapse but should also be included in future discussions in building inspections and construction codes.
