+Chris Snedden so the black "ink" is that a mason stain mixed with slip? Are you using porcelain slip or something else? What kind of transfer paper is that? Thanks for your posting. Very nice!
Hey Janet, no it isn't special paper at all, in fact it is just the cheap printer paper from Staples. You don't want paper that is good quality because it contains a lot of clay, making it difficult to get it off. Also, I use the Robin Hopper slip base with about 10% black Iron and about 50% black stain....I know that seems excessive, but I want black, and after all the work that goes into these things...to end up with some sepia brown is pretty disappointing. Hope that helps.
It's at leather hard stage. Then he paints with colored slip for the water, decals and plants. You can do a similar technique with bisque but that would require using underglazes instead.
Hi Annette, I use just regular old Robbin Hopper Slip Base with a LOT of black stain in it. up to 50%! with all the work that I put into these... I need BLACK... not brown... not blue.... but BLACK. Thanks for your interest. using images on clay is pretty fun! There's a lot to explore!
Hi Jordy, Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. It is definately not special paper. It's just the regular copy paper. Actually, really good paper contains clay and is more difficult to remove. The slip is just normal slip with no special additive or anything. It's just quite thick. This is just one way of putting imagery on clay though. I hope you're enjoying the exploration!
Hi Chris, I love your process and want to explore it again. I would like to send you an image for you to make me another screen for. Are you still doing that?
Hi Inge! I'm glad you like the slip transfer process.... so many possibilities! Unfortunately no, I am not making custom screens anymore. Have a look around where you live and see if there's a small custom tshirt company that uses the silkscreening process. They will make you a screen.
Great video! How did I miss this for several years? So glad to stumble across it. Well done and the work is gorgeous.

What mesh do you use for your screen?
This video is truly inspirational!
Hello Inge, I use a 214 mesh screen. The slip seems to go through quite well. Good luck!
Are these done on bisque and then fired with a clear glaze?
What kind of paper do you use and does the type of ink matter?
