    This is one of the most hilariously offensive (Richard Pryor was a co-writer) yet biggest statements AGAINST racism ever made. It is also one of the funniest movies ever made. The people that get offended by it, are the people who absolutely and completely missed the entire point of the film.

    That movie is from the 70's, it has 2 of my favorite sayings, if I pull something out of my pocket I'll say, "Excuse me while I whip this out." and if somebody drops something at work I'll say, "isn't anybody going to help that poor man?" lots of the younger people don't get it but I still think it's funny.

      That and the line about the "Laurel and Hardy handshake". What a shame that no one remembers Laurel and Hardy, two of the funniest guys in early movies. Unfortunately a lot of the jokes in this movie are things that people don't understand now.
      Basie looked great, didn't he? Love that guy.

    Right when that scene cuts out, Cleavon Little says "You are so talented. And they are so STUPID." I don't know why someone would cut that out, but it makes it more appropriate to the scene.

    Yeah, Richard Pryor co-wrote this with Mel Brooks and was meant to be the star (him and Gene Wilder are amazing together) but it was at a time he had a lot of drug issues and the studio wouldn't sign on so Cleavon Little took the role.

  • @lancecorporal9894
    @lancecorporal9894 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Burton Gilliam (Lyle in the movie) did not want to use the "N word" at all, Cleavon Little was friends with him and took him aside and said "It's just a line in a movie and you're playing a character, we know it's not you!" As others have stated, the entire movie picks fun at racism.

    Mel Brooks is Jewish and the producer.. He wrote all the scripts for the Black Actors and black comedian Richard Pryor wrote all the scripts for the white actors.. I was 25 when this played in the movie theatres...There wasn't a dry eye in the place. Black people were laughing harder than white people.. The entire movie is hysterical right to the end. Not to mention an all star cast. if this was released today I think most everyone no matter what race would find the absurdity and hysterically funny take on racism of this movie. if NOT, then they have issues. great reaction now watch the entire movie.

    Hey man I was kinda surprised by your reaction! I saw this movie back in 1974 and as a minority person I remember we laughed our asses off throughout it. We knew it was a comedy. There was a lot of stereotypes in the movie but it was just still funny as hell. We weren't so sensitive. We knew when somebody used racial epithets for real and that's when you really got offended but a lot of the racial jokes of this movie were written by the great Richard Pryor for laughs. I'm just glad you "got it".

    It's the funniest film ever. Mel Brooks is a genius, together with the great Richard Pryor. You have to see the whole film....A bit of the movie that was cut during editing is where Sheriff Bart was invited into the room of Lili von Shtupp, a very sexy German cabaret act who arrived in town. The lights were turned off in the room and Lili said "Is it true what they say about Black men?". You then hear the sound of the zipper coming down. "Oh it's true, it's true" said Lili.
    What was cut was Sheriff Bart's line "Oh mam......that's my elbow!"😅

    This is terrible. Someone has deliberately cut off the last words that the sheriff says, which totally changes the meaning of the scene. And this change is clearly made with malicious intent. You, Palace should know that the scene actually ends with the sheriff, a very happy and relieved guy, saying, " I am so talented, and they are so DUMB!"

  • @MarcosElMalo2
    @MarcosElMalo2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    We should definitely note that some folks were offended at the time. Maybe they didn’t see the comedy in it, or maybe they didn’t think that the comedy rose high enough to forgive the offense. But in any case, Neither Mel Brooks nor Richard Pryor (co-writer) wanted to varnish the racism satirized by this comedy.
    In response to people who say, “You couldn’t make this movie today,” Brooks responded, “You couldn’t make it back then, either.” Brooks fought to make this movie the way he wanted, putting his career and reputation at risk. There’s a lot of anecdotes about how the cast reacted to the use of the N-word in the script, and how Cleavon Little, who played the sheriff, had to convince one actor that it was for a greater good.
    But you really need to see the whole movie.

    Part of the comedy in that movie was picking on racism and showing how stupid it is. Just about all of Mel Brooks movies was doing that. Today I don’t think people would be able to handle it EVEN THOUGH it was meant to show how stupid racism is there’s just to much snowflakes out there today.

    The orchestra in the middle of nowhere doesn't get a laugh....I wonder if he doesn't understand that's anachronistic and supposed to be funny. And, of course, no laugh on the "Laurel and Hearty...handshake" line. Laurel and Hardy were a legendary comedy duo!
