There are over 250 Index Funds in India and picking the best one for your passive investing portfolio can be quite the task. And so, in this video, we narrow down from a pool of 153 equity-oriented index funds to just 11 index funds that I'll like in my long-term index fund portfolio. I've call this my IPL, my Index Premier League because just like an IPL team where one needs the right combination of batsmen and bowlers for a winning season, an investment portfolio requires the right mix of index funds to ensure robust performance.
In the creation of this video, I delved into the performance of index funds, looking at trailing, rolling and even annual performance as I looked at 4 categories of index funds:
1. Broad-market index funds such as the Nifty 50, Nifty Next 50, Nifty Midcap 150 etc. that are market cap based
2. Strategy index funds such as the Nifty 200 Momentum 30, Nifty Alpha 50, Nifty Midcap 150 Momentum 50, Nifty 50 Value 20 etc. that are based on single or multiple factors; these are also called factor-based or smart beta index funds
3. Sectoral and thematic index funds panning areas like banking, financial services, auto, IT, healthcare, pharma, realty, housing, manufacturing, infrastructure etc. These indices often go through business cycles, resulting in fluctuating performance
4. International index funds such as the Nasdaq 100 and Hang Seng Tech Index which ensures our index fund portfolio has global exposure and diversification

Thank you Shankar ji. Very nice compilation. I am happy to see that four Index fund category where I am investing after my own research is in your IPL Index team. Way to go

Shankar First and foremost thanks a million for making this video 🙏🏼🙏🏼👍🏼😊
You have probably invested more than 16 hours researching and putting together this 16 min video 🙏🏼
If we really want to make the best of it, we should watch this 3-4 times and pause maybe 20 times. But well worth the effort. 👌🏼👌🏼
Guys if you want to take a shortcut, go to 15:50 mins, take a screenshot and go and invest in the IPL stars. Trust Shankar's research and reasoning and you can't go wrong over a long period of time. All the best. Happy Investing 👍🏼
Thank you very much for your kind words of appreciation. I am glad you like my work 🙌
Thank you very much Shankar Ji. This is a perfect complementary to your previous video on building a portfolio through ETF.
Most welcome! Yup, I had to do some schedule jostling to ensure the portfolio builder video came before this one. Glad, it worked! :)
Pls share link of the video on building a portfolio through ETF

Wow, thanks 🙌
Amazing video Shankar Nath. Thank you so much for the insights. Would you recommend considering the ETFs of these Indices to invest? Especially the factor based ones like MIDSMALL, SMALLCAP, ALPHA and so on.
Thanks. The investing vehicle is secondary, based on your comfort you can use ETFs or index funds
@@shankarnath Thank you.
Excellent video. What would you say should be the weightage between these 11 funds?
Let's assume a monthly SIP of around 2L? Should we also consider SIP + Lumpsum?
Thanks!
1. I would assign a weightage for my core portfolio in line with my 3x3 grid that I discussed in the previous video + I'll divert some indices to my satellite portfolio
2. Yes, SIP+Lumpsum should be used .. it ups performance and increases absolute wealth.
@@shankarnathhow would one best decide the right lumpsum amount, given current market highs. Or should we do the traditional lumpsum investment in liquid or arbitrage funds and do STP to this portfolio
Great analysis kudos to you. My question is market is getting flooded with NFO and ETF...etc not sure what's the benefit for investor.
Thank you! I'm guessing more NFOs & ETFs means more competition. More competition means more focus, better tracking & less expense ratio
Informative and useful analysis
Glad you think so!
I have been thinking of moving from stocks to index investing and your video comes at the right time. Thanks.
Most welcome!
Sir thank your for this efforts ... 👌 💪
So nice of you .. it's my pleasure 🙌

THE MOST FANTASTIC VIDEO I COULD SEE ON INDEX FUNDS. WOW WOW AND WOW. THANKS A LOT FOR THIS. THIS IS SOME ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL CONTENT
You are very welcome 🙌
Sir You will be always admired for your depth & clarity with which you explain any concept.
Thank you very much
Hi. I remember you have picked Nifty 500 value 50 in previous video of 2 funds for long term. Do we have any specific reason for not part of IPL funds? Please advise
Yes, the Nifty 500 Value 50 was chosen in isolation as it fitted that requirement of creating a "lifetime portfolio". The constraint was that I had to choose a Momentum index fund and a Value index fund. There was only one broad value index fund then i.e. N500V50 (the other was N50V20 but that's only large cap oriented). This is not the objective here and I was free to look expansively across 66 available index fund categories and 150+ available index schemes.
Thank you for your detailed research.
Glad it was helpful!
Superb Shankar Ji as always.
Thank you!
Superb content and presentation as always
Thanks!
Awesome video sir.. 😊
Thanks a ton
Love to hear you and the way you present the investment thesis. I asked my Kids to watch your videos for knowledge, fun and the way you present information. You are Genius and motivation for youngsters and investors who are long term

Your work sets you apart from others. Thank you for putting so much effort for literally providing free education to us.
My pleasure! Appreciate your kind words 🙌
Hi @shankarnath, great video. It would make also make a lot of sense to analyze volatility and sharpe ratio for the indices.
Thanks for the suggestion
Excellent presentation Sir
So nice of you
Really great work sir.

Welcome!
Superb way to present with data Mr shankar .I was actually reading mutual funds by Monika halan where she too emphasizes on index funds for passive investors....I am happy to be getting this great video at the right time.......Thank you 👏👏
Most welcome! 🙌
This is a great run up on Index Mutual Funds. You have great knowledge, do awesome research and have a knack on teaching; what i really love about your style is the way you teach us to fish! Thank You! 🙏
Glad it was helpful. Much appreciated! 🙌
Hi Shankar,
After listening all so called fin fluencers. You are the only one whom i follow now. Watching your 1 video for any topic is 100 times better than watching other so called fin fluencers 100 videos.
So nice of you. I am glad you like my work 🙌
Good overview on index possibility @shankarnath keep going 🎉
Thanks a ton
Shankar sir . This is one of the most precious high intensity content i have ever come accross in almost 12 years of investing journey. Once again thanks for compiling such a vast topic into a very simple to understand explanation. I can understand the efforts behind it as me being an Engineering Professor.
You are most welcome. I am glad you liked it and found it useful 🙌
I was only aware of Nifty 50, Nifty Next 50 and Bank Nifty index and not aware of other indices. Thank you this informative video on various indices that can be invested by us.
Glad it was helpful! Yes a large part of this video was to build awareness of index funds beyond the Nifty50.
Your videos are always well researched and backed by data
Glad to hear!
What banger of a video. Shankar sir you have done it again 🎉
Thanks a ton 🙌
Another question shankar sir ! You often talk about core vs. satellite portfolio....Is there a passive way of creating a satellite portfolio using index funds out side the largecap - midcap universe ? Any methods or scenarios in future videos will be helpful
Yes, I explained this in the video on "Building a Strong Investment Portfolio" too. For instance, tactical interventions like investing in the Nifty Realty Index is a part of the satellite portfolio. Similarly, many of the experiments I do is a part of the satellite and if I see resolute-ness, then it becomes a part of the core. Look at it this way -- anything tactical, adventurous & unproven goes into the satellite portfolio. Atleast, this is how I look at it
Namaste Shankar- Many claims, ETFs shifting from ‘core’ to ‘satellite’ side of portfolio, reflecting its becoming ‘vehicle of choice’ for tactical use. Pls share your experience/analysis on this?
Hello, I didn't understand the question. Can you please rephrase it?
Great analysis Shankar ji.Especially on the Hang Seng index contrarian view. Can you share the article on why it is a good time to invest in Hang Seng.
Thank you! Here's the post: shankarnath.substack.com/p/todays-special-fish-manchurian-and .. the Hang Seng was ~16,000 points when I posted this.
@@shankarnath a very opportune document. I have been evaluating to invest in Aequitas far east china fund who were probably the first to call out the valuations in India are overblown.
Extra ordinary analysis❤❤❤
Thank you
Thank you sir, great knowledge for all. Should i invest all 11 funds for sip? Plz reply sir
Most welcome; please do your research on top of this and see what works best for you. Infact, I myself don't have all 11 indices .. I am invested in just 5 of them. Why? Well, when choosing funds, your existing portfolio is an important factor as you want to everything to come together perfectly. In my case too, I have existing schemes and everything can't be about "starting from scratch" .. we have to work best with what we have .. we can't wipe the slate clean everytime. Hope this helps give a perspective .. now that the foundation is there .. please research & build consensus in your own head.
I love watching @shankarnath videos and learning from them. Thank you sir!
Any active or passive index fund which is based on losers portfolio?
Welcome, I have not come across such a fund
Hats off to your dedication
Thanks!
Sir i have watch every video on momentum and indexes of you
But please can you research the SIP returns for stratagy indices because
I have searched a lot but not able to analyze
Please use advisorkhoj.com for SIP returns of strategy indices.
Geart Content Consistently. You are super bro. I was planning just to make index funds based portfolios. This info will help. Can you also guide on how to invest large sum of money like 1Cr in markets and in how much time based on current valuations. Thank you again
Thank you! Since your corpus is large, please consider working with a financial advisor who'll assist you with the various instruments, tenure, bucketing, schemes etc.
Absolutely the best video ever to learn about different types of index funds, it's purpose, long term returns, negative sides etc.. Thank you very much putting up this best visual representations as well.
Most welcome 🙌 .. I'm glad you found it useful
Excellent analysis
Thanks
Thank you SHANKAR JI 🙏🙏
Always welcome
Brilliant!
🙌
Another awesome video sir, thank you! It would be helpful if you can share these excel sheets for us to analyze and use it. Pausing the video to review the data does help but having the excel sheet would be better.
Once again, great job with the video! 👌🏻👏👍🏻
Thanks for the suggestion
Thanks Shankar again for this great content. I am confused between Index Funds and ETFs. I know both are the same but from a long term prospective, Do you have any preference? i am getting biased towards ETFs considering the real time Price updates. Is there anything else i should be checking while deciding between both?
Hello. I have no preferences between the two. I have a video on ETF for Beginners where I've discussed the differences, pls watch that
Brilliant work.
Thanks
Sir, your pick on HDFC defence fund or new nfo Nippon India defence index fund. Can we consider it in our portfolio. Pls suggest...
Pls consult your financial advisor for specific scheme suggestions
