What i read in Moebius interviews is that the project was to create some illustrations around the concept of another project which was Internal transfer, an animated movie in which Moebius was involved, but that never saw green light.
Anyway the interesting thing is the process they used.
What i read is that Geoff drew the pencils, and Moebius didn't expect that level of detail, but he
took up the challenge, so basically for every illustration he put a piece of a particular paper which is not normal vellum, but it's semi transparent- white paper, and inked using this over Darrow's pencils.
I also think as you noticed, that Moebius redrew some faces and some other detail, fixed some very small things. BTW Moebius inking style with nib pen, was so awesome that he was able to improve even over Geoff's yet amazing art so that if one doesn't know, believes it's quite all Moeb work.
Then, I think that Moebius didn't colour the originals, but he coloured using the method with prints they call "blue" made in grey or blue on good paper, so that the artist is able to paint over it, and there's a sheet of tranparent paper with the black line printed over. And if you make a mistake you can somewhat start again, so, it's a bit less paiful.
The works tho, are very complex so it's amazing and i think completing one illustration took several days.
BTW if you reach to talk with Geoff about this work it would be totally amazing.
This, for me is an incredible work, that marries two incredible artists like Darrow and Moebius, and id' like to know more about it! :)

Read in interview somewhere Darrow penciled everything. Moebius saw it and loved it, and went in and inked and colored it but also redrew some of it to make it more of a Moebius universe. That's why it's so hard to tell what's by who.
Darrow drawing and then Moebius inking would make sense. Would allow for Darrow' s crazy details as the foundation ... and then Moebius being able to improvise faces and ink lines on top.

Absoultely incredible. Would have loved to see Darrow in this ep giving his commentary. I see this portfolio often in shops here in Paris, and have often wondered what was inside. They're pretty expensive as you can imagine.
Indeed... Got hands on one very recently for a grand, saw a few listed twice as expensive.
Amazing collaboration pieces! Even better than when Moebius was assisting Charles Schulz on Peanuts!

Wow! Incredible!!... Have you seen the older anime ova Dragon's Heaven? Its really good, HEAVY Moebius influence. Some nice art books from it too.

Completely blown away. What IS this?! What an amazing piece. Man, I need to see these in microscopic detail. The coloring, too, holy cow! I can't even imagine watercoloring this (I'm assuming that's what he's doing). So inspiring. That downshot of the city almost looking like cracks in lava, I straight up GASPED at that one. 🤣 Really want you guys to do this again with Geoff. And if there's anyway to zoom in, I'd watch that video 1000x.

It’s good to finally have a look at this portfolio. I remember the ad and sample pics. The plate at 12:04 is the one I remember most with the bird creature perched over the cauldron of cooking street food

Incredible! I’ll keep it to two questions - 1. Is there a loose story being told? I see reoccurring characters and themes(taking the birds for a ride), but the plate that is the painted city landscape from high above really throws me. Always loved that piece but it is so different than the others. 2. In the French Adena edition, plate 7(greenish colored one with the orange orb center) has four smaller portraits of characters underneath the main drawing, but they were left out for the Dark Horse printing. Why was that? - thanks for the opportunity fellas! I love the channel keep doing the lord’s work!

Thinking about this one always makes me a little salty. I owned it years ago, when you could, if lucky, find one for around $100. I didn't know what to do with it without getting a bunch of frames, had no room for them, and so sold the portfolio for $150. Now? Forget about it. It might as well be an original. I remember Darrow mentioning that it might be re-printed by Dark Horse, so we can only hope.

I‘ve read in an Interview with Moebius that Darrow did the pencils and Moebius the Ink with Tracing Paper.

I know more about Moebius and how he was used to work under pressure. I know less about Darrow. At 6:18, this collaboration is great! The two different treatments of colour is really interesting. At 12:28 it would have been nice to have the Waldo character in the scene, as a joke! 😉
P.S. : I’ve seen some of the prints sold separately on the web, yea there’re expensive for sure.
I've seen someone selling the print of one of these with 34x27 inches.Anyone knows how big the original size of these artworks? So curious.
Crazy timing, I have the opportunity to buy this portfolio from someone I've been buying comics from for the last year. Unfortunately the portfolio was not taken care of as well as it should have. Some of the prints have bends on the corners.

Hot take that Moebius did the color work for this, slapped in some of his hatching on Darrow's pieces here and there, and likely both of them drew together on elements for each composition. Just my speculation though, so could be radically different, but for sure I think it's Moebius coloring this.

These kinda colors are what made me really love colored comics. As a kid, I kinda liked black and white stuff more 'cause most color reproduction in comics was fucking awful. The I discovered the Euro magazines with Corben and Moebius and it was really crazy how the color would bring you into a whole universe with its distinct atmosphere in just a single panel. As Jim said, it's a shame how all these years later, color still seems more of an afterthought in so many comics, even with how easy it would be to just experiment and go wild with digital these days.
