Some of them quietly disappeared because they weren't popular with the audience when they were introduced and Degrassi was testing the waters with them. Other characters like Kendra WERE INTENDED to become part of the main cast, but the actress who played her, her parents decided that it was a bad idea for her to be a part of Degrassi and pulled her out.
Okay maybe I might sound a bit dramatic, but I hated the way majority of the poc/black actors- actresses characters were portrayed in this show. It upset me how once we began to get introduced to them, they never hold any interest storylines unless it’s degrading of either the following: pregnancy, sex, scandal, or racial discrimination/profile. For instance, look what happened to Hazel. She was listed as a primary main character, & they had great potential to make her storyline draw to the audiences. Same as for Dallas, Connor, Danny the list goes on. Disappointing the only main focus they actually gave grace to as character development was jimmy brooks (drake) but that’s bc he’s half-black😒 idc I said what I said.
I 100% agree and I always hated how Chantay never really got anything either. She was always just off to the side gossiping or being nosey. I mean it was nice that she was the head cheerleader tho, that was different but I definitely preferred something more prominent than that for her.
I kept waiting for Hazels moment, the racist storyline was not it, she had a lot of depth and deserved more storylines. Same with Shantay, I wanted to see her character growth and we never got that 🙃🙃
If any of you watched the Jane Mulcahy video, she mentioned how there’s basically no one from the Class of 2016. There’s several characters that COULDVE been had there not been outside circumstances (Tori being held back in grade 4, Jonah being held back, Cam’s death). I think they dropped Jack because she was actually the only one in that class. It would’ve been weird to have her graduate by herself and/or make another set of characters that only get a 20 episode arc for one year of high school (Next Class 1&2).
According to the Degrassi wiki, the class of 2016 were Tiny, Grace, Zig, Tristan, Miles, Winston, Maya, Jonah, Zoe, Goldi, Esme, and they graduated in Season 4 of Next Class. I guess Jack, Tori and Cam would have been there if circumstances were different.
5:37-5:38 Arleen probably got removed, because Devyn Nekoda (the actress that played her) got typecast onto this disney channel show called "backstage" around 2016
I agree with you about how they introduced characters just to date the main cast and when the relationship was over, they disappeared. I really didn’t like that. I also agree that Blue was pointless and boring. He was just like Damien 😒 he dated the main friend group, got no storylines by himself, and disappeared
From everything that I've read and heard, the girl who played Kendra left the show so abruptly because her parents weren't happy at all about their daughter being asked to be a part of a sexual storyline in the series, which I'm guessing is the Manny pregnancy storyline that was supposed to go to Kendra's character instead, with Toby taking Craig's place as the would-be father. Of course, that's all speculation on my part and it could also have been Paige's rape storyline that was meant for Kendra (since those were the only sexual storylines in season 2 and 3), but I can't really imagine them putting someone who's so much younger and far more innocent than Paige was through that kind of hell, when the storyline was more than hardcore enough as it was. For many of those young actors, however, I can imagine that it was simply too hard to make their personal lives work, when they also had to be in the series and at the end of the day and especially with such young actors as we're talking about here, it's infinitely more important that their lives off-screen works for them than how their character was written off. At least, that's how I see it.
Honestly another good example of a black hole character is Terry, because after the situation with Rick, it’s like we’ve never seen her again, just Paige speaking bits and pieces on her, here and there.
Darcy could’ve been on this list to. I know the actress went on to 90210 but how can Claire go thru sexual harassment, cancer, get pregnant and then have a miscarriage all without her sister Darcy or ANY mention of her. So weird😂
She is not a black hole character. They wrote her off that she moved to Africa to volunteer since the actor moved on to 90210. They even made it a plot point because Peter and Clare were receiving gifts from her
The rule of Degrassi: only one Black male and female main character each. Seriously the Dave thing hurt. You're telling me they couldn't find Dave stuff to do with the sophomores?
Peter was never redeemable no matter how hard the writers tried. From what he did to Manny, Sean, and Darcy. Then he randomly gets hooked on coke smh. He got way too much screen time.
I was thinking Kendra wasn’t around for so many important incidents in Spinner’s life, at least they had the excuse of Darcy traveling abroad for why she never showed up for all the stuff that happened to Clare.
Before Leia’s actress decided to leave, the writers were intending to make her character a recurring/guest character from the second part of Season 10- the first part of 11. After she left for college they did want to get her back for the graduation episode but she declined as she was busy with school to guest star
I think the Charlie arc was realistic because since she was dealing with a high schooler, she got over it and disappeared. It makes sense to not to have the closure because it was immature to begin with.
Jack being written off upsets me to this day. Her character is pretty much one of the only decently written depictions of a polyamorous person I’ve seen in any media, and she had way more of a story to tell beyond Imogen. The downfall of TeenNick/The N and the Netflix transition really hurt Degrassi, but what likely did in a lot of these character is the episode count. 10 episodes works for narrow-focus serials, not for large-cast dramas that want to give everyone time in the sun.
Degrassi was a show that had 22-44 episodes per season at various times over the years, so Netflix cutting it down to 10 was criminal. Jack was a terrible girlfriend to Imogen, and I wasn't sad that she vanished
Kendra would’ve been a senior in seasons 8 & 9, so it would’ve been nice if she came back during those seasons. That way season 8 could’ve incorporated the older characters with the new characters. I heard that the actress’ parents pulled her out of the show because Kendra & Toby were going to have a more mature storyline with their relationship and the parents didn’t like that
Glad you did Dave last he was and still is my favorite character on Degrassi I wish we could of saw more of him and I would love to had seen him back with Ali, I was always been team bhandari Turner then team Dallas Bhandari and I could of even Dave with Tori and I thought he killed it at 16:46 lol till this day I'm trying to find the name of that song he did lol. Cool video but just some feedback, you can really benefit from doing a bit more research and add some more context to some of these. The actor who portrayed Julian, Stephen James, left the show to move to LA prior to season 12 being filmed. He ended up later having the lead role in Race, the Jesse Owens biopic as well as Selma which won an Oscar. The actress who played Keisha, Latoya Webb, did a story time TH-cam video about her time on the show and said she was simply cut and never called back with no explanation. Most of these other characters you listed were minor characters in seasons 13/14 that would've only made sense in Next Class if you'd seen all the previous seasons, they were kind of in between trying to make it a stand alone show and a continuation which is why it failed and so many characters/plot lines were dropped.
I remember when the first cast graduated we followed them in college for a little while, and then they just kind of stopped. Like, I get that Degrassi is about highschool kids and them being in college is against the idea, and the only reason we followed them to college was because the writers didn't really plan on the series continuing so they didn't start establishing younger characters (or that's the impression I get), but it's still kind if "black hole" since they weren't exactly written out of the series. On that note a lot of the returning Degrassi High characters (Archie "Snake" Simpson's generation) were kind of black holed. I know Joey was mostly "Craig's father figure, when Craig leaves he has no purpose," but Joey was pretty "strong secondary, part of the community with his used car lot," and as far as I remember he just kind of "stopped appearing."
I think it’s one thing if the characters contract was up or they didn’t return but regardless of reason it’s really sloppy and bad writing to just have SO many characters just vanish into thin air with no explanation. You mean to tell me a team full of writers can’t find anything to do with these characters? And the actors that leave, can we have a send off? An explaination?????? Like for example Kendra I get the actors parents removed her because they weren’t okay with scenes she would have been in, but you can’t just never mention a little sister ever again like it never happened?! They could have recasted her at LEAST the actor was only there for one season with MINIMAL lines and one small story line it’s just so unsatisfying
9:04 I would say that Sav is a student but out of all the adult and high school students relationship, this is the one I can somewhat tolerate cuz Sav was possibly 18 at this time and already graduated when he and miss oh had a moment at the prom.
it's still mad skeevy, because she was a teacher in her 20's fooling around with a teenage student. It's totally unethical and she should have known better than to lead him on. She was a whole ass adult and Sav still only had the life experiences of a child.
Honestly what’s interesting with Derek’s character is there’s like very, very subtle unstated negative development with him. Did anyone else ever notice how he really started going downhill as a person after he framed Danny for shoplifting and the two stopped really hanging out? There’s implications there that he really just threw out the rest of his morals and started hanging with the worst people after that.

@@BillyBob-ti2fz IDK
My favorite Dave Turner
Craig came back for a couple episodes in season 6 and when Ellie interviewed him he mentioned that very briefly Joey moved to Calgary. 😉
RIP Jamal 😢❤

I thought Derek got expelled
Most of these people are just side characters to progress the plot of the main characters
Thank you for this. Idk why but Degrassi content relaxes my stressed millennial brain 😂
it relaxes my stressed GenX brain lol
Thank goodness I stopped watching at season 7. It seems like someone in production doesnt care too much for minority and heavy set characters
I'm going to be doing a video on Degrassi and Racism and diversity in general so I'm glad you said that
@@briannawilliams97 👍Coolness, I'll be looking out for that one.
9:04 I would say that Sav is a student but out of all the adult and high school students relationship, this is the one I can somewhat tolerate cuz Sav was possibly 18 at this time and already graduated when he and miss oh had a moment at the prom.
Also, Raymond Ablack has looked 35 years old his entire career.
@@DeadpoolNegativelmfaooo nah facts
it's still mad skeevy, because she was a teacher in her 20's fooling around with a teenage student. It's totally unethical and she should have known better than to lead him on. She was a whole ass adult and Sav still only had the life experiences of a child.
Who are you to judge what color their holes are?!
(No but seriously this channel randomly got suggested to me and ive never watched this show)
Honestly what’s interesting with Derek’s character is there’s like very, very subtle unstated negative development with him. Did anyone else ever notice how he really started going downhill as a person after he framed Danny for shoplifting and the two stopped really hanging out? There’s implications there that he really just threw out the rest of his morals and started hanging with the worst people after that.
The girl Arlene probably left the show to go do this other Canadian show called Backstage. It was on Disney and it was actually very good. I loved her character
i’m pretty sure derrick got expelled in that episode later u hear him get called to the office

@@EricaAsjaee I forgot 90% of this list lol
My question is some of these boy characters’ names, Blue, Zig, Tiny, I think there’s one named Sod, who came up with these?!
Lmao yea I remember Next Class had some weird names. And I always wondered where the nickname Spinner came from. Idk if the show ever explained that.
@@DaGuyTy1 if I remember correctly it’s because he had ADHD and would be extra hyper in class when he was little.
@@LaurenElizabethxxxxyou are right about that. 😉
I don't know about Blue, but Zig and Tiny are nicknames. Weird nicknames were a tradition of the Degrassi franchise: Snake, Spike, Wheels, BLT, LD, Spinner. And the last boy you mentioned: his name was spelled S-a-a-d and that is an Arabic name
This can be easily answered by the fact actors left the series for various reasons.
Nothing more or less complicated
Thank you for this because I was thinking of these people for a while and I'm like where they go what happened?
The persona 3 music in the background caught me off guard 😂
Music teacher was sooo fine 😂 , too fine they had to black hole her
Lol she was bad as fuck
What about Angela and Joey?? Craig’s sister and step dad - they just disappear after a while never to been seen or heard from again 😪
I wonder why they used the same actor who played Angela for the character Tori
Wow it’s like I knew Kendra was gonna come up 😂(I didn’t)
I dont know much about this Degrassi thing but It reminds me of one of our Brazilian soap operas, Malhação.
I always believed that blue never actually existed for some reason idk it may have been a theory or something
What happened to Emma’s lil brother?
her lil brother could have been in Next Class
Remember Chester?
Off topic, but I’ve always liked Connor lol 💕
14 seasons wtf have anything from season 1-Drake left
Drake was briefly mentioned twice by a couple of students long after he left the show
That happens in schools tho. Its organic
Only ones I didn’t miss were Leia and Derrick
Only ones I didn't miss were Blue and Jack
*Asocial is the word you want, Antisocial refers to traits associated with sociopaths lol.
sociopaths like Hunter Hollingsworth?
Why is Winnie Oh a stupid name?
who’s Kesha
she was a friend of Frankie and Zoe in season 14, but barely had any lines, and was only on the show in a few episodes
Excuse me you forgot someone jay
I don't remember seeing or hearing about him after the Degrassi Takes Manhattan movie in 2009
@ok
Kendra Mason is cute!! 🥰
Lets be honest here. No one cares about blue. Haha jkjkjk... well. I dont but.. 😅
Blue was a boring block of cheese
Awwww I adored both Jack and Arlene!!!
These characters were either boring or sucked. 😂 nobody misses them
Wesley and Dave are good. I liked seeing Conner have other friends besides Claire and that group
Jack was a terrible character.
she was a bad girlfriend
@SkyeID Yeah, she was.
They dropped dave cause they claim he said something about gay folks. Or said f word on live
