Ah yes Esme. I'm not gonna lie. I hate Esme. She is one of the most unlikeable characters on the show. But I would be lying if I said she wasn't entertaining. As a crap starter she is one of my favorites.
As someone with bpd, i definitely do believe she is bpd at the lowest form.. meaning no therapy or medication... she is a great portrayal of bpd without help (key word WITHOUT) and i think degrassi shouldve allowed her to continue her storyline but ofc they got cancelled
i actually saw somewhere on reddit that a good friend of Esmes actress asked her if they had a plan for Esme before the show was cancelled and she confirmed they wanted to do a bpd storyline and get her the help she needed. as someone else with bpd i really wish they had the chance

The Degrassi wiki says she has histrionic personality disorder, and I definitely feel she suits that title better. Especially because it is an even lesser known illness; they had less to go off of in terms of an accurate portrayal.
I'm also a borderline and I see myself, prediagnosis, in high school. Abandonment issues, self injury, strained relationships with my parents. 'slvt' behavior. It's really sad.
Something that stood out to me about Esme was her implied past She said she been called an enabler implying Miles isn’t the first person she lead down a dark path She said to zig dancing is about fighting doubt; maybe she took up dance to help with mental illness Being able to walk Miles through a panic attack over the phone Out of all the new characters in Next Class besides Saad & Rasha, Esme is the one with the most backstory
Unpopular opinion maybe, but Esme was the best part of NC. If the show hadn't been cancelled we definitely would have seen her get a Holly J-esque redemption arc.
I believe Esme had the building blocks of an extremely interesting character. Her manipulative and erratic behavior on top of her past trauma and insecurity kept my attention. I wanted to see how everything played out for her. Would she get the help she needs or would she double down on her destructive behavior? We’ll never know
I think her final breakdown was where she cracked. I think it would have been a copy and paste of Maya between seasons 3 and 4. She would have gotten help over the summer before the new school year and had to come back to school an almost completely changed person. And I actually have a great idea for her.

There HAD to be a redemption arc for her IF Degrassi kept going... I also think she was upset that when she saved Maya, nobody gravitated to her instead to Maya and she wanted to destroy Maya to get in ppls good books Maya told the counsellor everything because in a way she owed Esme for saving her life and it got Maya some satisfaction I guess

I am convinced she has bpd which I hate to admit as someone with bpd but she really does seem like an undiagnosed teen who doesnt understand yet that everyone else doesn’t feel things the same way she does and tries to force the same emotions out of others
I don’t think Esme really liked a lot of people. She became friends with Frankie and if Next Class didn’t get cancelled, I think their friendship would’ve gotten stronger and probably healthier
the edit at the beginning made me laugh harder than it should have LOL. so glad you touched on this. i started watching degrassi as a young child, but only recently finished it as an adult and i was FLABBERGASTED by her character in the last season... you could tell they definitely only added her to make problems. this type of character was done a lot better in earlier seasons with Imogen and Holly J bc like you said, these characters got resolution and more development. her backstory was really half baked. she couldve been really great, i found that i related to her character well to some degree. the last season as a whole was...interesting. also, i'm figuring that they didnt bring the cam situation back up bc this was the moment the fandom REALLY turned on zig. by the end of the series i still hated him for that, i never truly forgave him. he didnt really ever redeem himself and a lot of the fandom felt the same. to bring it back up might've jeopardized any hope for the audience sympathizing with zig even further. some people that watched next class hadn't seen next generation so they might've been trying to avoid that lol.
would’ve been so incredible to watch them diagnose and medicate her. as someone who went through it myself, she was such a raw depiction undiagnosed BPD in a teenager and her healing would’ve been beautiful
That would have been a great way to end the story. Have Esme get help. Zig forgives her and he tells her about Cam. And zig and maya are brought back together as well and discuss that and maya talks about her attempted suicide etc it would wrap into a little bow

Esme is totally Georgina Sparks coded and she reminded me of Fiona in ways. I wasn’t a fan of Esme and she did awful things, but she was genuinely scared when she found Maya OD’ing on the roof and she did help save her life. That’s as far as we’ve seen a humanly and caring side to Esme. If Next Class didn’t get cancelled, then I think she could’ve had major character development and would’ve had a redemption arc
One thing people complain about in new class, which I agree with is that plot lines move by fast due to the limited episodes; Esme's story suffered from moving at the pace of a Next Generation season, so putting that pace onto a show that fast made her reach her rock bottom towards the end, whereas if this were a TNG season all four seasons of events likely would have happened over the course of one season, with the following season providing us insight and possible redemption. It's sad, because it could have been a great deconstruction of that peer you had in school who your classmates deemed "crazy".
honestly it seemed like the writers were planning to explore esme's possible BPD in season five, but we didn't get another season to do that. which is a shame honestly, with how well the show handled both craig and elis bipolar disorder, i think it could of been both impactful and given us proper character development for this character.
I really wish HBO picked up this show as planned once Netflix dropped it. HBO had a change of plans due to euphoria, but we all see how that worked out 🥴

Next Generation was one of my favorite series to watch as a teenager where I related to a lot of character struggles that are rarely if even shown or explored for a younger demographic. Seeing other characters who have been SA’d, self-harm, introverted, autism, introversion, family expectations and perfectionism - as a Kittian Caribbean woman of color, I am really grateful for Degrassi lasting as long ad it did and touching on subjects most teen shows wouldn’t dare to. I didn’t get too far into Next Class after Next Generation, but still enough to understand. Thanks again and I hope you keep making more Degrassi analysis videos!

I used to really dislike same but looking back in retrospect I can see that as a rewatch the series as a 20 year old Esme was just hurting deeply inside and needed help she had psychological/mental problems which deeply affected her behavior but she’s not they bad just damaged and needs mental help, I relate to esme in some ways.

When you consider Zig's past relationships, it was only a matter of time before he left Esme for Maya whether Esme had done anything wrong or not. It sucks that Esme didn't find out that she'd dodged a bigger bullet, but then I guess the writers might've missed their storyline quota.
This character is so interesting and I would of loved to have just one episode from her pov where we got to see what her home life was actually like. It seems like she’s rich but neglected. She probably doesn’t like therapy cus her dad just made her go so he wouldn’t have to deal with her himself. I definitely hc her as someone with bpd and she clearly has ptsd as well. She had so much potential as far as characters go 😭

I wish that some of the characters came back as teachers, Marco was student teaching in season 9 so it would’ve been nice to see him as a permanent teacher in next class
I honestly found her so interesting, I just wish they would've dived deeper into her character more. I feel like we probably would've gotten more had the show not been cancelled.
Not gonna lie I like Esme character. Starting in the season 2 she gained her crazy reputation with only getting worse in Season 3. She was mocked by Tiny,Jonah, Grace, and sometimes her own boyfriend Zig. What’s really sad is you’d think they have more empathy for her. Zig and Tiny were gang members, Grace was in the rubber room with them, and Jonah implied dark past.
I have mental illness, so I'm empathetic towards most of the characters struggling with their mental health. I feel bad for Esme, but strongly dislike her. I would have liked to see her grow and heal a bit, and it sucks they didn't get to develop her character more. Something that bothers me with this particular character is how often I see people defend her, then hate on the smallest things done by other characters just for being annoying. It's something I really don't like about the Degrassi fandom.
I remember reading something, cant remember where i found it, but it was a type of log of episodes that they were gonna use if nxt class had a s5 i think one of them said esme was actually mentally unstable and that she was gonna spend more time with her father, there were other things too
was esme a horrible character? yes was she iconic? also yes. i had a feeling majority of the people who watched didnt like her but my heart pained for her! you can tell there were deep rooted unresolved issues and i was hoping we would get more episodes/seasons that focused on her and her journey. i was estatic seeing an asian character not be the typical student character but they definitely missed the mark when making her just a plot device for these two (white) guys. i wish more people gave NC a chance, there were so many cool characters they introduced that i grew to love.

I never got far enough into Next Class to know Esme, but great video! Ive heard what others have said about her, and it makes me want to watch it, but I honestly dont think I can. Im too old and do not understand the issues those kids are facing on the show. 😅 I struggled through watching the first few episodes, and then I just couldn't go on. It was so bad.😬 😂
I suspect I may have bpd and besides the gratuitous meanness I could see so much of my own behaviors in her. The manipulation and forcing your own emotions onto others. It was kind of a slap in the face. It sucks we never had a resolution to her story.

Esme really was a thorn in my side. She seriously should’ve been institutionalized. It’s clear she was suffering from trauma, borderline personality disorder; and obsessive behavior. I think her storyline is half explored, just like you said, serious bread crumbing with her character. The storyline with miles should’ve been explored more with her. How she didn’t get in trouble for providing him with pills and horse tranquilizer is beyond me. She was starving for love, but had very little for herself. The emotional / physical abuse she put Zig through, I don’t like Frankie but she used her too, and had no remorse for either of the destruction was putting unto them was quite chilling.
I haven't even checked in on her in a while. I have no idea what shenanigans she's gotten herself into but maybe I should check in on our girl and see what else she's lying about
I LOVED LOVED LOVED ESME why because I hated next class it felt more like a child drama and not like the degrassi I grew up on and loved esme was the one bit of normalcy to the show she was real she had trauma that wasn’t taken care of which explains her episodes and lash outs but she had real life problems and you could see under that she was a smart a girl and possibly a good friend but that was over shadowed I wish if they didn’t cancel degrassi they would of deep dived into her life because tbh she was a mixture of Alex and Ellie if they had a child filled with their trauma together

When you consider Zig's past relationships, it was only a matter of time before he left Esme for Maya whether Esme had done anything wrong or not. It sucks that Esme didn't find out that she'd dodged a bigger bullet, but then I guess the writers might've missed their storyline quota.

This character is so interesting and I would of loved to have just one episode from her pov where we got to see what her home life was actually like. It seems like she’s rich but neglected. She probably doesn’t like therapy cus her dad just made her go so he wouldn’t have to deal with her himself. I definitely hc her as someone with bpd and she clearly has ptsd as well. She had so much potential as far as characters go 😭

@@kritkratt6383it didn’t hold a candle to dtng, but it was nice seeing the older characters come back for the reunion episode and Craig came back as a judge for the talent show in next class season 4. I wish that some of the characters came back as teachers, Marco was student teaching in season 9 so it would’ve been nice to see him as a permanent teacher in next class
I honestly found her so interesting, I just wish they would've dived deeper into her character more. I feel like we probably would've gotten more had the show not been cancelled.

Not gonna lie I like Esme character. Starting in the season 2 she gained her crazy reputation with only getting worse in Season 3. She was mocked by Tiny,Jonah, Grace, and sometimes her own boyfriend Zig. What’s really sad is you’d think they have more empathy for her. Zig and Tiny were gang members, Grace was in the rubber room with them, and Jonah implied dark past.

I have mental illness, so I'm empathetic towards most of the characters struggling with their mental health. I feel bad for Esme, but strongly dislike her. I would have liked to see her grow and heal a bit, and it sucks they didn't get to develop her character more. Something that bothers me with this particular character is how often I see people defend her, then hate on the smallest things done by other characters just for being annoying. It's something I really don't like about the Degrassi fandom.

I remember reading something, cant remember where i found it, but it was a type of log of episodes that they were gonna use if nxt class had a s5 i think one of them said esme was actually mentally unstable and that she was gonna spend more time with her father, there were other things too

i had a feeling majority of the people who watched didnt like her but my heart pained for her! you can tell there were deep rooted unresolved issues and i was hoping we would get more episodes/seasons that focused on her and her journey. i was estatic seeing an asian character not be the typical student character but they definitely missed the mark when making her just a plot device for these two (white) guys. i wish more people gave NC a chance, there were so many cool characters they introduced that i grew to love.

I never got far enough into Next Class to know Esme, but great video! Ive heard what others have said about her, and it makes me want to watch it, but I honestly dont think I can. Im too old and do not understand the issues those kids are facing on the show. 😅 I struggled through watching the first few episodes, and then I just couldn't go on. It was so bad.😬 😂
I suspect I may have bpd and besides the gratuitous meanness I could see so much of my own behaviors in her. The manipulation and forcing your own emotions onto others. It was kind of a slap in the face. It sucks we never had a resolution to her story.

Esme really was a thorn in my side. She seriously should’ve been institutionalized. It’s clear she was suffering from trauma, borderline personality disorder; and obsessive behavior. I think her storyline is half explored, just like you said, serious bread crumbing with her character.
The storyline with miles should’ve been explored more with her. How she didn’t get in trouble for providing him with pills and horse tranquilizer is beyond me. She was starving for love, but had very little for herself.
The emotional / physical abuse she put Zig through, I don’t like Frankie but she used her too, and had no remorse for either of the destruction was putting unto them was quite chilling.
I feel so seen in so many of these talking points. A lot of these couldve given us more representation

I LOVED LOVED LOVED ESME why because I hated next class it felt more like a child drama and not like the degrassi I grew up on and loved esme was the one bit of normalcy to the show she was real she had trauma that wasn’t taken care of which explains her episodes and lash outs but she had real life problems and you could see under that she was a smart a girl and possibly a good friend but that was over shadowed I wish if they didn’t cancel degrassi they would of deep dived into her life because tbh she was a mixture of Alex and Ellie if they had a child filled with their trauma together
Honestly ever character in next class is really boring. Other than maya every character is so uninteresting and annoying. Next class is probably the worst degrassi show
